Impressive. I think 35l is a daypack size for me :D Never imagined camping gear for an overnighter would fit in there.
@chrishamilton2527 Жыл бұрын
Interesting that you say about weight low down. In the military we are taught to put the weight up high - sounds counter intuitive but it works. I use a 40 litre roll top pack - I use. Nylofume pack liner which will amaze you. They are about £3.50 each but last for ages; really tough, and my quilt and spare clothes go inside along with my thermarest. I don’t use a pack cover. I have a DCF sack to shove my tent into if it is wet but generally manage to sponge it nearly dry as long as it’s not tipping down when packing away.
@elventuresearth Жыл бұрын
You're not the first person to mention that! It does sound backwards though, I was taught weight low to keep centre of gravity low, and to keep the weight on your hips rather than shoulders. Do you know why the military teach it this way? Will check out the pack liner, tah!
@theradgegadgie63524 ай бұрын
@elventuresuk El, do you think it might be a female/male thing, regarding which part of each sex's body is more healthily able to carry weight? Obviously, the military has way more men than women, and those parts of it likely to do rough living more often (like the infantry) are pretty much exclusively so. That'd explain why he was taught differently.

Great video. Have one myself and with some proper organization managed to make it fit all sorts of gear for a 3 day/2 night trip. Will say that past 32lbs it becomes uncomfortable to wear, but otherwise does everything perfect

I have that pack - and never thought to try my RAB ascent 500 in the bottom pocket - I'd easily get the rest of my gear in the rest of the pack - especially using your tip for the sleeping mat. Thanks

Going to repack tomorrow morning with these tips. I could hardly fit my stuff in my supposedly 50 liter National Geographic hiking backpack (I know....not a regular brand, but it was cheap and it is sturdy lol) Trick with the sleeping bag should give lots of space I hope. I put it in the small compression sack. But indeed. All the cilindrical shapes take up room....pfff...stressing now lol Cheers, new subscriber from the Netherlands 😅

Brilliant, thanks for that! I run a little wild camping club and it's surprising how many people forget their sh*t kit. Beers are essential, or a hip flask full of gin or brandy. Thanks for the down jacket tip, never seen that and it's probably more comfy than most camping pillows
@elventuresearth Жыл бұрын
The pillow trick is probably the best rip in the video in my opinion, I don't have to carry any extra kit but I can tick that pillow into my sleep bag with me and it's mega comfy
@matthewhowe4326 Жыл бұрын
I often pack an empty pillowcase, then once in your tent, you can pack it with clothes and your down jacket uppermost, makes for a good comfortable pillow and keeps your clothes warm and out of the way overnight.

I’ve been ummin’ n errrin’ over this bag for a bit. Size wise, I’m definitely now set on it. Thanks. However, there are now two versions knocking about and yours looks like a cross between the two. I actually bought the Stratos II online (Blacks) and today received the Stratos - clear differences between them. No one who sells them so far seems to realise this and those who are selling the new version are actually still selling the old one labelled as the new. Yours is the colour of the II and the back adjustment doesn’t look like the ladder, also making it a II but the hydration bladder goes inside and the ‘Stratos’ lettering is in upper case, which is like the old version. This is gonna be a bugger…

Hi El, great video of the practical use of the Stratos. Is there a reason why you prefer this to the more female oriented Sirrus?
@elventuresearth Жыл бұрын
Thank you ☺️ when I buy gear and equipment I try to ignore the mens/women's labels and just choose whichever the best product for me is. If I remember rightly I tried both versions in the shop and they both fit comfortably, but the Sirrus only came in the classic "woman in the outdoors" colours of teal and purple- I wanted something more neutral so chose the Stratos. Some thing like sleeping bags I think it's more relevant but if the rucksack fits then it fits ☺️

Interesting that you don't use a compression sack for your doss bag! Also, anybody looking for those cheap microfibre cloths - UK only, £1 shops. Look in the car section. They're there. Also, weight - pack brew up stuff towards the top so you can stop for a brew. First aid kit - top pouch on your bag so you can get to it quickly. Get more weight to your shoulders!

Quite impractical to have a water bladder squashed inside the pack with the rest of the gear when you want to refill it. I used the Levity 60 and hated every refill. I don’t get it that Osprey doesn’t use the same system in every backpack between the pack and the air vent mesh like they do with some of their trekking packs. Super convenient

Heavy items should put in the top section such the weight rest on your upper back, take some of the weight off your shoulders.
@geometerfpv28046 ай бұрын
The point is to put the weight on the hip belt. How would putting weight up high "take weight off of your shoulders"? It's gonna cause the pack to tip away from your back, and that causes weight on the shoulder straps. This is why packs have "load lifters": to keep the cg as close to you as possible. Keeping weight low helps this. I don't know where so many people got the idea that "weight up high" makes sense.
