My problem with my shrimp tank is seed shrimp/ostracods. I have an explosion of them, and I think they must have hitchhiked on plants or moss I added. I tried adding a couple of guppies but they just scared my cherry shrimp and didn’t eat the ostracods. Then I tried neons, leopard danios, corydoras and CPDs, and again, none ate them and my cherry shrimp were terrified. I have now removed all fish, my shrimp are super happy about that and just had babies, and many females are berried. A month in and now I have a bazillion ostracods swimming around the tank and completely through the substrate. I can’t vacuum the substrate due to baby shrimp. I can’t feed less, again due to baby shrimp needing food. I’m worried if I decrease feeding, then my baby shrimp will starve as the ostracods will eat any found food and out compete them. I am in the process of cycling a new home for them, a bare bottom tank, however, I’m now wondering how I will manage to net the shrimp without catching a bunch of ostracods at the same time! HELP Mark! Arrrrrgh. This is my first experience with shrimp and these critters are spoiling my joy of having tiny baby shrimplets for the first time ever.

Doesn't adding 'Rich One', or another additive, also raise the TDS slightly? When I do a waterchange I add plant fertelizers (if needed) first. This raises the TDS from 4 to about 30. Than I add salts to get to the desired value (140).

Hi Mark and shrimp community! Do you have any tricks or tips how to clean limescale off the glass of my shrimp tank with live animals inside? It's been a very hot summer and i had a lot of water evaporated in order to keep the temperature down but i wasn't always quick enough to refill it and now the mineral build-up is quite extensive. I've already been scrubbing for days but it's such a slow and tedious process. Also I don't want to release too many minerals back into the water too quickly at once, to not shock my shrimpis. Thank you! (I'm new to the hobby and your videos helped me a lot already😊)

There is no easy way when you have animals in the tank, the only thing I can think of is a stailess steel razor on some type of holder, I think you get them on amazon.

I’m kind of surprised that with snails you find dead shrimp. I have two tanks running for over a year one for almost 2 years and I’ve never found dead shrimp. I have lots of snails, I don’t feed much but I probably feed a little more than I need to, But a healthy snail population usually gets rid of anything dead in there before I ever notice it, I do notice fluctuations in the colony size but more to do with weather, as it gets colder in winter it seems to shrink down to about 150 to 200 and will go up about 100 more in the warmer weather, and I see less tiny shrimp during the winter. I just change about 30% of my water every couple weeks and have lots of plants and a few tiny ember tetras end it just seems to have a good natural balance for a 30 gallon tank. My other tank has one Endler guppies and probably 60 shrimp now, started with five or six but that tank is the same, just half the size I don’t cull either. I started the smaller tank just to breed the shrimp and cull but the red shrimp started getting some black in them and I like it so I just let them go. I started with six shrimp so I guess it’s doing pretty well but I just let it kind of go naturally and take care of itself. Every few months I’ll do a couple extra water changes and clean the filters but with the snails I have I’ve never seen dead shrimp at all. I really admire your dedication and taking the time to cull And get specific breeds. That was my Intention originally but I just don’t seem to do it and I really don’t mind the changes. I’m moving this year probably so I’m hoping to set up a large tank with nano fish and lots of plants, I might start calling and put them in there and just let them be wilds and keep a couple of tanks just for colored shrimp. I know I’m probably doing it wrong but I’m very grateful for your channel and I spent months watching you and learning before I got started and it was invaluable. I know without that I would’ve probably killed them all but luckily I learned a lot from you, thank you. Even if I’m doing it differently, at least I understand what I’m doing now.

@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Dean, this question is just dependent on your water source, basic test kits would be a gh and kh tests, and I would use a water conditioner like prime. this gets you in the ballpark numbers wise of knowing if your water is ok and how to adjust it. for the most common shrimp the neaocaridina cherry shrimp, you will be needing a gh of around 6-10 and a kh of around 4-6.

ok, i'll try this... Hi! I'm from Russia! I am happy to watch your videos! I learned a lot, a lot of useful things and still a lot of questions as the auto-translator of subtitles distorts a lot))) Please tell me the best parameters of water for shrimp red crystal. In order for them to shed well, gain good eggs and survive a maximum of fry. Here is the data of my aquarium: 35 liters Soil " FLUVAL STRATUM" External filter and internal airlift filter. Fillers ceramic, sponge. Plants, mosses, bucephalandra, the hornwort, riccia. Decorations: cactus sticks "chella" Water parameters: TDS 153 NO3-1 PO4-0 ammonia-0 PH-6.5 KH-0 GH-9 GH raised from 6 to 9 on the advice of other breeders to better shed. Molting improved and mortality from it did not become. Water changes once a week 30-40% slowly pour, do not drip ((+bacteria, micra dose 1/3 spoon from "BENIBACHI" about 60-70 shrimp. there are not many juveniles, but there are. I feed every other day in a variety of ways. the problem is that the shrimp is very active, then in the morning all hide. In the morning I sometimes see a dead woman. not often, but a couple of times a month 1-2 dies. what am i doing wrong?
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Thats better, I would say your gh is to high, your old gh of 6 was perfect for them, the other thing is your water changes are far to big I think I only do 10% every week or two and all my water is dripped back into the tank, this is what will be killing the girl shrimp, I used to have the same issue.... by the way do you have any name that you use in English? or something that sounds like your Russian name but in english so I can understand it? well come to the shrimpfam if you have anymore questions feel free to ask ok.
@АндрейХамзин-ю6з
@АндрейХамзин-ю6з 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarksShrimpTanks ))) My name is Andrey. Did I understand correctly that I need to gradually, with substitutions, reduce the GH from 9 to 6? Do water changes drip only 10% per week? and i didn't really understand about what kills female shrimp? Substitution for 30% of the water they are killed or the high GH? Or the fact that I pour water and not drip drops into the aquarium, leads to death? And here's another question: With the age of the aquarium, TDS increases. And I can not in the wake of this increase the TDS of salts in the water during substitutions. You say that when substituting, you need to prepare water for substitution with the same TDS as in the aquarium. It turns out that every year it is necessary to pour more and more salt, as the aquarium ages and the TDS in it increases from aging and soil contamination.
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrey, Yes you need to reduce that gh, and do water change at 10%a week dripped back in. pouring it back in will kill the shrimp, the part at the end you are talking about is called tds creep. forget tank tds and just concentrate on the new water tds.When I talk about this in the video I know my tank is the same as my tank is the same as my new water, this is what you are aiming for.

Just wondering if you ever use test kits to check for ammonia, nitrates, etc. in case something is out of balance.
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
I used to Patty but not anymore, I have learned over the years for example that tanks are not ready if they dont have any microfauna in them, this is something that just takes time to build up, so I dont need to test for anything even when cycling now. when and if you get lots of microfauna the tank is more than healthy enough for baby shrimp.

One of the best ways is to take an old sponge from another tank that you know has macrofauna in it and squeeze it into the newer tank... I think seeding would be a good term for doing this.. if you have a new tank and no other tanks you will eventually get micro animals from any plants you have.

I've got a pretty bad spread of bba and I'm not really sure what to do about it, its covering the leaves of my plants and slowly killing them. Should I dose the tank with hydrogen peroxide? And how often? Once a week?
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
shorten the light time to just 4 hours and remove as much as you can manually by hand, BBA can feel tough thats why its a pain to remove. the absolute best way to deal with algae is to get the best plant growth you can in your tanks. if you have an inert tank with sand or gravel as a substrate try this, 25% water change a week with aged water, let it drip back into the tank at just 2-3 drips per second and then look into getting a multi purpose fert for the plants, the better you get them growing the less pain in the ass algae you will have. I use a fert from from Holland called A Complex at 1/3 dose , depending on where you live you might be able to get something easier, like in the states I think Aquarium Coop does one called easy green.

I've been keeping shrimp for about a year and a half and this past summer I lost a bunch because of a heatwave. I never really bothered with RO water and TDS before and have never used any sort of minerals. If I wanted to introduce minerals now what is a good way of starting it in order to not throw off the shrimp from the start? My tap water is around 8 tds so does that mean my tap water is just as good as RO water?
@MarksShrimpTanks
@MarksShrimpTanks 3 жыл бұрын
8tds isnt bad my friend but what is that 8 tds made up from? tds isnt really useful when using tap water as it measures everything. an RO unit is the number one thing I would tell people to get above all else as it takes away all the quessing. if that is out of the question then I would go like this, get a buffer for the shrimp types you keep and make up the water to the recommended value on the tub, then do just your water changes remembering to drip the water back in, if you tell me your shrimp types I can tell you what buffer you need.

So the slow drip back in is to make sure PH stays close to where it is already(5.5-6.0). By matching TDS & temperature of the water already in the tank is not enough cuz the PH of the new water is 7.0- That must be why Rich One is helpful as well cuz of the fulvic acids helping to buffer the PH of the new water down from 7.0- This is why this method works so well. No fluctuations at all. Very good method, very smart.
