Mark, can you please make a video detailing your water systems? Materials, pumps, valves, etc. Basically, what you used to fill this tank and your system you used on your racks. I would love to make one like yours. Thanks. Love your content.

Been watching your channel for a while, I’ve tried making a Caradina tank before but failed to my own ignorance. I set up 2 tanks 3 weeks ago and have been following your videos to a T. So far biofilm is there and algae is starting to take off. Keep up the good work!

Great video Mark, love these tanks and your BOA shrimp! Happy to see you have great success with them! Yeah I remember you had akadama in most of your tanks in the past, and your moss didn't grow well, I had the same experience with it - shrimp were ok, they don't need nutrients but plants didn't grow well. I like what you did to fix it - adding an extra ugf with ADA to provide some nutrients. Good thinking👍

string algae normally steps in when the other plants are missing something to make them grow more, so in low nutrient tanks string algae can be prolific, what Ive dont is learn to read the signs in the tank that tell you you need to add something like a fert, I use Tropica premium nutrition at the recommended dose when I see, poor plant growth, no biofilm on the glass, yellowing of plants...I actually have a day for it thats in my head called fertilizer Friday and I manually go through every tank looking at the plants, if they need ferts I dose 2ml into 50 liters of water... this is something you just have to gauge for yourself. regarding the string algae itself manual removal is the best way and I found twisting it up with a bamboo skewer the best way. 🙂

Hi Mark, as an aquarist/bonsai grower I can confirm that the Ibaraki akadama is completely devoid of nutrients, but this can be solved quite easily when mineralizing the water, you first add micro and macro elements and then remineralize to the desired microsiemens. The same with every water change and the flowers will grow well. At least that's my recipe for a hungry akadam. But my question where to get these Boa shrimp??? They are beautiful and I would like to keep them in my shrimp corner... Hi Tom, Czech Republic

Hi Mark! What powders/minerals do you recommend I add to my fish tank? I currently use DSP and a Bentonite Clay Powder but unsure if I should be adding other things to further improve my neocaridina colony. Thank you!

Sometimes I add clay after a top up but no other powders.

Hi Mark! I am having trouble with these filters. The flow becomes almost null and i think it is from snails and gunk. Even if the sponges are clean, i still need to break them apart every month. Lucky you if the run 6 months with a good flow. Cheers!
@MarksShrimpTanksАй бұрын
Ive never had them go that bad, in the video I do say I clean my sponges every 6 months if that helps you any.

Had the same issues with those filters, I would suggest to buy Qanvee QS200, they have way way better bubble maker and never clog.

Hi Mark, do you put in some food into the new tanks to start the cycle or the active soil leach ammonia in this case..??
@MarksShrimpTanksАй бұрын
I used dead shrimp powder in this video, there is a link for it in the 1st pinned comment, and there is no amonnia in akadama soil so you have to add something to start it.

I notice that your sponge filter outlets are above the waterline. Is that just personal preference or is there a specific reason? Most sponge filters I have seen bubble up/are below the waterline. Thanks!
@MarksShrimpTanksАй бұрын
I like them mixed, sponge filters are most of the time inline but box filters have to be out of the water or shrimp will climb into them.
@Alex-so5siАй бұрын
what is that white ball thing for when u fill the tank
@steve-adamsАй бұрын
It's a float valve. As the water rises, the ball floats and gradually closes the valve. It's both for safety and convenience. You can fill to a precise level without watching it. You do need to test them occasionally; over time they can get sticky from wear and tear, or gunk building up. You just give it a wiggle and make sure it moves freely, then ensure the water is stopped when you lift the ball and close the valve. They're super handy!

Your filter wall idea is very similar to the matten filter idea. Have you ever thought of trying or have you used matten filters?
@MarksShrimpTanks5 күн бұрын
Yes I have tried them, they are no good in my opinion, they eventually do clog up and if you have a lot of babies they are a real pain in the ass to remove and replay and not worth it in my opinion plus you really dont want all that waste sitting in the tank.

What is your pH when you add the shrimp?
@MarksShrimpTanks3 күн бұрын
Ive had tanks as low as 5ph when adding shrimp. djust drip acclimat and the shrimp are fine, the biggest thing killing shrimp is people adding food when the inside of the tank is covered in food.
@thesoldier45415 күн бұрын
Hi Mark, I want to ask, is it normal for PH to rise in a few months if you use Akadama soil?
@MarksShrimpTanks3 күн бұрын
yes its normal if you do any type of water change after setup, I dont do any water changes at all now so my ph is always low.
