As a person who had a breast reduction due to back problems, I related to this SO much, especially in the moment when Zach talked about feeling melancholy after the procedure. I just thought something was wrong with me to feel depressed after CHOOSING to have a procedure. I felt like I had betrayed my body by not accepting it the way it was, and I had this weird body-horror feeling like I was some Frankenstein thing and like my chest wasn't mine. I still feel like that - I have numbness and scarring that reminds me of it daily - but for some reason, I never realized how normal it is to feel like that. Zach sharing his hair journey was really eye-opening for me.

His hair looks great when he's sitting in the chair going over how his old hair looked, completely different from the picture(s) on the tablet. After the stylist got done...he just re-thinned his hair in the front and exposes the thinned/white spots he was insecure about.
@vinceslapchopper
@vinceslapchopper 4 ай бұрын
his hair transplant failed, graft survival rate is terrible. Sure he gained some thickness in the existing hair he had in the first place but it is mostly due to medical therapy (finasteride and minoxidil maybe?). His stylist just exposed how his hairline really didn't change much after the procedure. Still does that same combover hairstyle that balding people always do to hide their receded spots. I would be furious over the lack of results and threaten to sue those hipster barber shop doctors if I don't get a refund.

I think that part of being body positive is taking control of what you don't like and changing it if you want. Just because I accept myself the way I am, doesn't mean I might not want to be in better shape or have fewer wrinkles or a different hair color. You can love yourself AND make changes, they aren't mutually exclusive!
@mariemiel
@mariemiel 4 жыл бұрын
This is a HUGE thing for me and I'm so glad you said it! I fully accept my body and the fact that I'm overweight, and I support anyone and everyone in the same boat, and while my insecurity surrounding it is probably in-part due to society and female idealism, its not entirely, and a lot of my decision/wanting to change is to do with how I feel about myself. I'll never be a skinny mini, but I know that in the long run it will be better for me and my ongoing health and wellbeing to be more fit and healthy, and that's more than enough of a reason. But my wanting to change doesn't mean that I don't accept my body for what it is now, it just means I want to improve it further. Like tattoos! Just because I like my skin doesn't mean I don't want to one day have a lot of beautiful living art on it :D

People are starting to refer to this as body neutrality. Being able to look at your body in a neutral way of "I like this. I want to change this" and it not being a good or bad thing. Changing your body holds no moral value. Being fat or thin, smooth or wrinkly, curvy or straight, doesn't make you a good or bad person.

I see a lot of negative comments about your hair cut, which I feel is weird considering this is a video about your journey with hair insecurity. I think the most important thing is that you gained confidence through this journey, and it really shows. It doesn't actually matter how your hair is styled..its how you FEEL. And now, your hair grows back- You can try all these different hair cuts and styles!! I think you looked great, pre haircut and post. Because YOU feel better, and that makes you glow! I'm so sorry you've had to go through that. I'm also female and balding, but not due to alopecia, just terrible Ashkenazi Jewish genes like Zach, which made me upset enough that I would avoid looking at myself in the mirror. This follow-up video made me reach out to my GP and try to get help again. The first video, I tried but I had a different, not empathetic GP who wouldn't give me a referral for a dermatologist. My new GP a year later was amazing, she gave me not just the referral but also a name of a dermatologist who is known for being sensitive about this. And two years later, my hair looks totally normal to me, and it's such a weight off my chest that it's not going to get any worse.
@Sunnylyndis

It's not vanity to care about your appearance. We grow accustomed to a style or look we like. If you are used to your hair is a specific way and it changes suddenly that is upsetting. You are 100% valid in how you feel and shame on the people who told you to feel otherwise. To anyone who called you vain. I guess they better not care about the clothes they wear, the food they eat, fitness, vitamins, probiotics, skin care, diet plans, etc. That is vain too. I'm upset for you... that should never have been said. I have a friend with alopecia. She got it around her late teens. I met her when she already was losing hair. There were days she felt like sh*t and she didn't do her makeup, dress nice or try to do her hair, or use a scarf, hat, etc. I personally thought she looked pretty either way. Her freakin eyes are beautiful, her laugh is infectious and she is one of the kindest people I know. She's a spitfire and is sassy and witty as heck. She now rocks a shaved head or puts on a wig sometimes. Some ignorant people say sh*t before they speak, but friends and loved ones who care will be around. On the good and bad days. It's okay to talk it out. She still calls me to cancel plans because she just doesn't want to go out. So we stay in eat popcorn and watch a movie or if she REALLY doesn't want to see anyone I'll call her and talk for hours. In all relationships, there is a give and take. I'll be here 80 if she can only give 20. I hope you are doing well.

@@Sunnylyndis thank you so much for your kind words and validation! I actually really needed that today. You sound like an amazing friend and your friend is lucky to have you in their life. I really hope they are doing well. Having alopecia as a woman is so heartbreaking and such a hopeless feeling. There are so many companies preying on our insecurities. There's a plethora of unregulated "snake oil" salespeople making so many claims and "promises" while using deceptive marketing tactics yet in the fine print relinquishing all responsibility. The majority of scientific data available is in relation to male hair loss so there isn't a lot of evidence based and safe treatments available for women. What is available is usually expensive and rarely covered by insurance since it's considered cosmetic. We are finally starting to realize the pressure and unattainable beauty standards society puts on people but there is still a lot of stigma surrounding certain issues and hair loss for women is one of those things. It's acceptable and some even find it "sexy" for men to be bald but it's yet another double standard for women. I'm almost 3 years into my journey. I have another appointment with my dermatologist this week. She had put me on oral minoxidil at my last visit and it seems that it may be helping. I've also found a hair growth supplement by Natures Bounty and have been using Nioxin shampoo/conditioner/thickening hair mask that have seemed to help slow the hair loss and hide the progressed thinning so I'm cautiously optimistic right now.

You can totally support a body positivity message _AND_ recommend surgeries and health treatments. If someone, like Zach, is so depressed and anxious about the way they look, if it's dragging them down every time they look in the mirror, surgeries and health treatments are absolutely okay, if it saves someone's mental state or even their life in some cases we should never get at them for it. Making the change to have the surgery was clearly something you thought about for a long time and now you're this wonderful person for other men to look up to by being so talkative about the process and your initial fears in doing it. Being constantly judged and told they're unhealthy by people who aren't doctors constantly is more detrimental to their overall health than a little extra cushion could ever be. Stop thinking that calling out people who have excess weight is a concern for their health when it's not. It's you shaming them for not looking like Kendall Jenner. The part where Zach momentarily regrets his decision because he often talks about body positivity and loving yourself, I just want to say this : To anyone struggling with these kind of thoughts, just remember that loving yourself sometimes also includes changing things about yourself, to make you the best version of yourself! If you're confident with yourself and love yourself, and you wanna start exercising to be healthier and also lose a few pounds, that's self love! If you do things to change yourself because you know it will be better for your physical and mental being, then that is the highest form of self love in my opinion. Just remember that you're all beautiful and you should do whatever makes you happy (as long as it doesn't hurt others) 💕💕

It's also worth nothing that doctors were kind of seen like quacks back in the day. They would steal dead bodies, not clean anything (germ theory is relatively new), they would just try anything from cocaine to blood letting hoping something would work. Remember, just over 100 years ago, President Garfield was shot, and they had a team of doctors and scientist tried to remove the bullet for weeks and no one in that time thought to wash their hands. When McKinley was shot, they also tried to probe the wound with their fingers and didn't think to clean the area and he eventually died of gangrene. Barbers on the other hand "Well, I don't want to give anyone lice so I better clean my tools! Oh, and they should be sharp because no one wants an uncomfortable shave!"

The bit where Zach was talking about his feelings about having needed surgery even though he preaches body positivity hit really hard as a trans guy.
@geministargazer9830
@geministargazer9830 4 жыл бұрын
I think it’s about weighing up pros and cons. This is a pretty minimally invasive surgery and the payoff in confidence is really worth it. Compared to boob jobs for women, I think this is much better. Boob jobs come with a lot of risks, they’re much more invasive than this and you only get like 10yrs out of the implants. But boob jobs are pretty common. Fixing your teeth is another thing, I’d always recommend anyone who is unhappy with their teeth and wants to fix them to do that because it makes so much difference when you feel like you can smile again, the confidence payoff, so worth it.

There is ZERO shame in taking reasonable steps to make yourself feel more comfortable in your own skin. You aren't changing yourself for others, you're making that change for yourself. @@Dtzeo503 From my personal experience a lot of hair stylists I went to that were actually good didn’t go to any fancy school. Not sure how exactly they would learn, but I’d assume it’s just a lot of practice and getting to understand different types/textures. I don’t think these schools are really teaching that kind of information and because of it once people become “certified”(?) they don’t really know what they’re doing.
