I'm a older body builder and historically as stiff as a board; but in the past few months have started integrated Pilates and Yoga and am loving the feeling of activating my core and opening up long lost areas of my body. Am definitely going to try some of the activities shown in your most excellent videos and grab some rings for the backyard to take it to the next level. This stuff is the true fountain of youth. Thanks very much for the inspiration and ideas, Josh!

@JoeCuddlefish
@JoeCuddlefish 5 жыл бұрын
@@ugnius2707 I want to incorporate skills eventually, because I do like that aspect but I don't have the time to figure it all out. I do RR twice a week and still see lots of improvement. Adding weight was key for me. After a month or two of three sets of 5/6 pull-ups and seeing no progress, I added weight, about 5 pounds per week, and within two months was able to do two sets of 6/7 with 25 pounds and two sets of 6/7 without weight. I used same weight with dips and have seen an equivalent increase. I figure these are the rookie gains, so we'll see how I progress this semester.

His comment on training to a performance standard and physique will follow resonated with me. If you train for performance in a specific field you will eventually get a corresponding physique. I used to want to be able to be physically ready for anything any my body was leaner and vascular because I took up kayaking, did weight lifting and running. Been focusing on weight lifting recently and not including conditioning and it's obvious what it has been doing to my physique. Increase of muscular strength at the cost of conditioning. Corresponding weight gain due to loss of cardio exercise.

You have a magnificient physique, sir. I much prefer the functional strength and overall balance along with that type of physique that incorporating alot of calisthenics seem to do rather than the people that just work out for mass. I was wondering what your opinion on "greasing the groove" or micro workouts are. Like for example, doing a few pullups here and there while walking past your pullup handle in the house and trying to progressively do more. Versus working out 3-4 times a week and killing yourself every time (which is the way I've approached training for the most part).

04:35 *I woud'nt recommend the sissy squats to anyone!!* I almost ripped my cruciate ligaments in both knees because of that move. So I admit that I was'nt paying too much attention on warming up BUT the truth is that this move is very dangerous to your knees. I found a good alternative instead. I dont know the name of it. But its sth like that: you sit on your shins on the ground, your quads and your upper body are in a vertical line and tight. Then you slowly go back (without arching the back or sticking your ass out) until your mobility is not allowing you to go even deeper or your strength is not keeping up. Then you go back up. Keep your butt, core and quads very tight during the exercise! Its just brutal to the quads believe me. So the movement pattern is quite similar but I believe its better for your knees. You dont put as much pressure on them with your upper body weight.

Josh, a follow up video would be great with what you eat and your daily workout, do you do your upperbody workout twice a week also? Do you supplement your workouts with any cardio? Thank you again for another outstanding video!

Thanks Dean, I do the Rings twice a week along with some other bodyweight work like handstands as well. You will see the "cardio" I do in the roadmap to abs program 😀... just shot you an email as well.

Got a set of rings recently and I am in love! Hes right about your back it gets a fantastic work out and the strength helps other movements way more then I thought it would. I get cranky if I don't get my rows in. I don't want bulk I want functional strength for Ju Jitsu and its working!

I don't have rings but the next best thing...a pull up bar, tricep bars or whatever they're called, and monkey rings as well as a vertical jump measuring board, and even a large stone that I can barely pick up that I use for weighted squats, at a nearby park. In about 6 weeks I've almost tripled how many pullups/chinups I can do, can now get full range of motion with about 5 reps on the tricep thing, and have put about 3 inches onto my vertical jump! I'm almost 40 and have never been this strong or flexible

When you take roids you still need to work out, you can just tell this guy has been doing this for a long time, he's also cut to the bone. You could take all the roids in the world , it would still take years to get to his level of skill.

No deadlifts? I think you're doing excellent but I feel like you're missing out on a lot of potential gains by neglecting deadlifts. And of it was me I'd definitely be doing some strongman stuff like loaded carries, sandbags and farmers walks Oh and I think hip thrusts are pretty awesome especially if you have access to a really good machine for them but that's just vanity speaking 😂😂
@oldnatty61
@oldnatty61 5 жыл бұрын
Dead lifts are great, but not essential. The body does 3 things: 1) Pushes itself from the ground or pushes the ground from it, 2) Pulls something to it or itself to something, 3) pushes something from it or something away from it. The dead lift and every other movement is a combination of these 3.

As it can especially if it's poor form ego lifting which I don't think this guy was doing. He seems to know what he's doing and have good form. In truth true heavy lifting is what one can handle in a slow controlled fashion. Really calling upon the muscles to handle the weight unlike the bounce, swing, and use momentum and bad form to get it at any cost style most of the young guys use now days.

rings are good enough, most gym bros who dead lift can’t even do simple ring workouts. front lever and back lever are pretty good for getting those lats strong with out the need of deadlifts; I can bet even strong deadlift guys cannot do a front lever, good anyway!

The question is not: "What's is better/one or the other?" It's: "What's the trainees goal?" The problem is most online/youtube "coaches (and I use the term loosely) don't know. So how are they going to guide (coach) trainees?
