I'm sure FB marketplace and yard sales/thrift stores work really well in some places but it literally only takes a few "entrepreneurs" to ruin the used game market for a whole city. Our town has a couple guys running around early and they buy up everything just to flip it online. Our big thrift store in town has a guy who rents out a quarter of the store and he spends all day buying up all the video games from the rest of the sellers so he can mark them up and turn a profit.

As someone who sells online, I never meet the buyer at my place of living or theirs. We meet in the middle at Starbucks or something. You never know when a buyer could come over to your house and then beat you up and steal everything. People have done that before not to me but I’ve heard it also, you don’t want a random stranger to know where you live. Always be safe and meet at a local coffee shop or something in between both of you. So for buyers I suggest sometimes just saying hey can we meet at a Starbucks near where you live. That way it doesn’t inconvenience the seller and they’re more likely to sell to you.

Honestly miss the days when retro gaming, especially gameboys weren't such a huge thing. The problem with hobbies getting huge is it always introduces a large amount of bad actors, in this case shit tons of scalpers. A similar thing happened to quadcopters: they were once a small niche hobby where some expertise and insider knowledge was necessary to get into it, but once they got more popular and accesible, you had idiots flying them around airports. That caused regulators to step in and in turn made the hobby a PITA.
@todorokishoto1 Жыл бұрын
I have mixed feelings about this, while very appreciative for the solid advice, I am also scared of what effect this might have if the video becomes popular and resellers end up watching it. Most good deals are taken within a 2hour window after being posted on marketplace in my area. In order to get anything decent you have to constantly open the app and check by typing vague words to get the biggest search results. The competition part hit me in the feels I've lost count as to how many times resellers have offered 50$ to 150$ more on things that were affordable prior to them spiking the price. Good video on the topic for the sake of genuine gamers I hope it doesn't trend but if it does, it's well deserved keep up the good work 👍
@Snivy102 Жыл бұрын
Most committed resellers know all these tips already. I very rarely compete against actual video games collectors for deals in my area. Hopefully these tips reach more genuine video game collectors in order to even the playing field. I'd also hope video game collectors are less likely to get into a bidding war like myself (11:54)

I wish this was a thing when I was getting my hands on the ds pokemon games- still remember falling for a reproduction copy of heartgold on ebay even when looking at higher prices in an attempt to filter it out, and then examining things insanely closely the second time around to get a legitimate copy of soulsilver- Now the only game I REALLY want to collect is just mariokart ds which I am fine paying like 20 dollars for whenever I have the money, so I am not too worried, so I won't really get too much value out of finding these deals though. But tbh, I probably still will try to use this advice for if I want to get the games for a friend or something (or help them find a good deal), because I WOULD rather someone experience the game for the first time on official hardware than emulation or repros

Feel like yard sales and flea markets are still the best way to go about this. Direct communication, you can test and check right there and bargain more easily. It's very casual too. Most people there just wanna get rid of stuff from childhood. Online is only worth it to me if you're getting buyer's protection and have good records and receipts. Charity / thrift stores don't always let you return items, but you get the mix of being able to physically test the game / console but also get proof of purchase

I sold my old gameboy games back when I was struggling financially - I got nostalgic about 6 months ago and looked for replacements for what I sold. Ruby, Sapphire, Firered, Leafgreen and Emerald - from what I could find locally, were just fucking insane. A minimum of 120 euros EACH, some of which with dry batteries that needed replacement - I saw some RSE cartridges that were cracked and/or with torn labels for 90 euros, I just couldn't justify paying that. I decided to grab some reproduction carts and boxes on the internet (boxes on Etsy, carts on AliExpress) and they serve the purpose that I wanted. I don't care for authenticity, but I know that I can look at the repro boxes, know there's a playable game inside, and remember the memories I had playing those games despite them not being authentic. I wish I had my options, but I'm from a small island country of around 500k, so the local options are my only options unless I'm also adding 25 euros on top for delivery, or up to 50 depending on where they are coming from.

I'm still looking for Fire Red, Leaf Green, Red, Crystal, Black 2, White 2, and Emerald, and Nintendo GameCube Gameboy Player (disk)...😰

As the buyer I can just wait. I hope those sellers are happy I see the price has crashed on a bunch of those games that they are stuck sitting on now. I never understood the mindset of holding on to stuff. Are they like hoarders. Just tells me they don't want to sell it at all even if it means they are stuck with it for years.

I paid £70 for pokemon white. I also paid £75 for a giant stuffed red panda. I think I just have issues

my brother in law was trying to sell his PS4 for the price of a new one at his garage sale. and wouldn't take negotiations for ANYTHING. despite that yk, being the point of most garage sales.

I'm frankly surprised with how far out we are from covid, game prices still havent gone down. I have many of the grails I would like for my collection, but I would still like to grab a few niche odds and ends and not spend a fortune.

The "retro video game store" franchise in my area has batshit demented prices but the antique mall that has its own video game section is much more reasonable.

I got my copy of Emerald for $65 off of eBay. It was listed as not working, but when it arrived in the mail, it did lol. The game froze after I turned it off and tried booting it back up a little later, though, and I opened it up. Board looked fine, and it turns out it was just one of the solder joints on the ROM chip that had an iffy connection. I tapped it with my iron, and it works like new again!

thats why i started to build my library from third party hardware i flash my own gbc games and lable them and i sift through broken consoles that i can fix instead of buying ones that work in my country everyone sells retro stuff by googling prices only to end up having to hold onto their items for years due to no demand while resellers only ask for 25€ for Ds lites that have a broken or scratched screen

Another term when searching for games is typing in terms used by people who don't know about gaming a lot. For example, Pokemon red cartridge will cost a lot but a Pokemon red CASSETTE will be cheap.

“next to nothing” is such a lie. It takes years to amass a collection especially spaning multiple genres and platforms. Time is the biggest factor not cash.

@@cosmicXtropics it's next to nothing because the deals typically include a bunch of video games - not all of which I need. So whatever I don't need, I sell to make back the money spent. That's typically how collectors build up huge collections. Like I say in the video "you gotta take the crap games with the good games, or no games at all"

I got a local indoor outdoor flea market near me. Me and my buddies go and have breakfast and walk around Good time by all. Mostly resellers, but I did find one guy who was selling some video games, and he left a gameboy player disc in a fifa 06 case. To date, my best score. Driving early to various garage sales is not fun and burns gas.

I don't like FB marketplace because of the Ghosters, but I have got some deals, I agree with you that yard sales/flea markets are not super worth it (especially if I end up with things I otherwise wouldn't buy by itself but I get tempted by the cheapness) thrifts aren't worth it if you only want video games, but if you like other used stuff like CDs movies, plushes, Nerf you can find at a thrift it might be worth it. Indy shops absolutely never have deals, but they usually have a consistent pricing point like 15% below eBay to 40% above, but it's easier to return game that don't work for one and they usually test games and inspect or resurface discs which is good Ebay can have deals but they're usually random and it's hard to find the best deal on what you want is "lowest price" give you potentially a ridiculous amount of similar things you don't want like different games in the same franchise.

I wanna get older consoles but on Facebook marketplace, older stuff is always so expensive and usually far away, and as someone who also has a bugdet, it’s hard to find anything good.

For people who collect, what is your plan 20-25 years to make sure your physical copies don’t go bad as they are meant to with their short lifespans? How do you live with the inconvenient shelves of games? Also when traveling how do you guys go about playing your games ?
