Lovely to see you riding in my back yard. I live in Tenerife and ride some of those roads everyday. At 74 years old I struggle now to do the full uphill stretches and usually curtail my rides at Vilaflor going up via Granadilla and back via Arona, but I can ride everyday staying at coast level or just above. I’m really glad you came to Tenerife and sincerely hope you had a wonderful time.

Tenerife is perfect for a family holiday and a cycling adventure. There are quite a few bike shops that rent bikes (I used Bike Point at the foot of the climb) so as long as you can persuade someone to take the kids for five hours (okay, I was away for eight!) then it's perfect.

We just returned from Tenerife and may have actually crossed paths on one day based on Strava data. Gorgeous country, friendly people, respectful drivers. We stayed in Playa San Juan in a beautiful home. Favourite cycling vacation after Mallorca.

Nice nice, in 2021 I climbed Mt Haleakala in Maui 3300m of elevation in one shot ,was hard to be honnest at 61 yo, yet seeing you climbing Tenerife highest mountain I want to think that it is not over for me and that I can still enjoy the thrill of the physical effort of these monster climbs. I am still recovering from a massive blood clot and pulmonary emboli that fell on me in 2022, but could do long climb again in 2023 minus that it is much harder than before . Cycling can maintain you in top shape but makes you feel older quicker as you can notice the effect of ageing more acutely through these extreme efforts that at some point you cannot do anymore well before the very old age. So my advise : enjoy it to the fullest as you are still young ...

Tenerife is brutally beautiful, and MAD props for you climbing Teide! If you can and if they offer it at the moment - do one of the stargazing tours on Teide. It's ... breathtaking, to say the least. Enjoy your stay!

@@KatieKookaburra Honestly, out of two weeks vacation on Tenerife this is the thing that I'll remember all my life. Half an hour of telescopes, approximately 45 minutes of a guided tour of the night sky. Teide National Park is a dar sky territory, so you can see EVERY DAMN STAR up there. It's so dark I was blinded by the half moon. Summing up: do it! :)

My wife and I honeymooned on Tenerife in 2016. We could not resist hiring bikes for a couple of days and climbed Teide. It can be roasting hot climbing those south facing roads i remember stopping in two petrol stations to fill out bottles on the way up.

If you ride your bike eat and sleep and not on a permanent part it’s very cheap to be away on an adventure. My cheapest airBnB was £196 for a week doing a region and my cheapest linear route hotel was £32 for one night and breakfast.

I get jealous when I see all the amazing destinations that I don't get to see otherwise. The thing that offsets the lack of travel is that a lot of that money is spent living in the Los Angeles area where there's a lot of similar riding & weather! So glad to see the warm weather. I've only started road cycling in the last few months while rehabbing from a bad knee. (I'd typically be off-piste asking this time of year, but I had to give that up), I'm off on my first adventure to cycle Tenerife in a few weeks. I hope all the training I've been doing on Zwift will have me fit enough to enjoy the climbs. Great video.

Very nice looks like a place they'd film spaghetti westerns. You'd want to be careful on the descent as you're going to be waiting on medical assistance if you came off out there. I'd probably take a CamelBak if it was hotter if there's no drink stops . Some people prioritise differently to others but they can't see that adventure is front and centre for some people.

You should come to New Zealand and do some bike packing rides....the Tour Aotearoa is a 3000km ride from top to bottom and is absolutely amazing to do, takes in both islands.....rode it in 2021 in 23 days with a friend and highly recommend it...... he is doing it again in February.........heaps of shorter options like the Kopiko which is only 1100kms, very remote with heaps of climbing, they all have breath taking scenery!!

I cycled up a couple of years ago & it looks like I descended your uphill route. Great achievement but I managed to get altitude sickness, I was in bits & knowingly texting rubbish to my wife. She was so alarmed she headed up & scooped me up. I was much better having descended but she was having none of it & I finished the day in the car of shame. I should add that I’m in my 50s, had no lights or layers, I really should have known better, lesson learned.

No need to justify holidays. Many aren't in the same situation and many may have even more time or money for trips. We all build the best life we can and our actions show our true priorities. Edit to add, Tenerlife looks great! I recently did a Madeira trip. Tough cycling there. Very steep with few flat stretches on the entire island.

I tried two or three times (?) last Winter to do the Teide on BigRingVR, I don't remember which route I chose (I think there were 2 or 3 options), and I think that I only finished it once. Sure, I was doing workouts on that route, so, it was way harder than it would have been by going "free riding", but 3+ hours on the HT was almost unsustainable. Yeah, I need to work my endurance.

@@KatieKookaburra You should check out Parque Natural Regional Haut-Languedoc (to give it its full name!) the area north of Quarante. Its beautiful, hardly any cars in most of it and usually great roads (some exceptions), Theres two main areas, South of the Caroux up to 700m and up on the Caroux, over 1000m. Hardly anything on the web though, Strava segment search can give you an idea.

There's no point really in asking possibly in a resentful tone how come that you can afford such trips just because of all the attendant sacrifices! It is time, money and effort that you're putting in; Besides, cycling is a blessing as much as it is a curse sometimes , one that'll make you suffer tremendously on the odd day.
