Hello everyone! I am sharing my dental journey and how to get into dental schools - including my mistakes, pitfalls, undergrad & grad GPA, DAT score, extracurricular activities, 5 years of gap year, post-bacc program, dental school applications, etc. This is a video I've always been wanting to make, but 5 years later I get to share it with you all so openly. While many of us in the dental field started out as premed, I was pre-med until 4 years after college graduation and actually applied to medical schools before finding myself in dentistry as a non-traditional applicant. And dentistry isn't for everyone and I am simply sharing my reasons for why it best suits my interests. We all have different routes to finding our own answers and callings, and I give all glory to God for bringing me to where I am today according to His perfect timing. Now I can't see myself in any other field than dentistry, but I also know that my life isn't just about my career.
For those who are considering other healthcare fields, those who have struggled and felt 'stuck' at times, and those who are afraid to take new risks and 'fail' - I hope you know that you aren't alone and it's okay. Please let me know if this story resonates with you in the comments below, and please support my channel by subscribing, liking, and watching my other videos! Thank you for watching!

My Korean Christian mom actually sent me your video. Your story resonates with me to almost every aspect that I actually teared up watching this. I was a very high achiever in high school. I did the full IB program, 8 AP classes/tests, many different leadership positions and clubs, lots of community service, lab research, etc, but ended up just going to my state school and did not get into an out-of-state dream school. In college, I was exactly the same as you. I started college really bitter because I worked so hard in high school that I did not have that much of a high school experience and my parents kept telling me I can have fun in college, but soon realized it is more serious than high school. I was also always doing something. My time was always filled with extracurriculars and leadership positions, and in my spare time I would study for my pre-med requirements while always sleep deprived. I relied mostly on the text and other resources instead of the lecture because I was always tired during the lecture and focusing on other things like my extracurriculars or planning my fun events and parties. One difference though was that I did not know if I actually wanted to become a doctor, I just did pre-med because my parents put me on that path. I became burnt out and my grades started slipping. I felt like I couldn't learn these hard things anymore and now I kind of feel like I don't know how to study anymore. My parents kept suggesting I take a gap semester to find my passion. I went to my career advisor for the first time my junior year during my gap semester and took a career quiz. All of my results came out as business and there was no hint of health or medicine anywhere. I knew deep in my heart the answer that I do enjoy business (and it showed in through my extracurriculars), but it took me a while to accept it until it was thrown in my face with those very obvious quiz answers. So I basically went into life crisis mode. Currently, I am still in the middle of choosing one path. My parents are telling me not to throw away what I have and my background, but I am also trying to incorporate my interest in business. Being on the pre-med path, I feel like I had wasted about 3 years of my undergrad and I am now on my 4th year as a senior. I'm the type of person that does not like to waste effort or time, so it took me a while to accept that my hematology research will mean nothing on my application now and other efforts I have put in into the medical field. I have finally accepted I don't want to commit to medical school. I went from roaming around different business majors to different public health majors to engineering to anything else. I ended up switching from Kinesiology to Health, Society, and Policy major with a Sociology minor during my gap semester. I have completed about half of the pre-med requirements, so I started looking into dental and realized most of my requirements fit with dental. I also researched about their work-life balance, their lifestyle, etc and realized they fit me best with my interests with business and my healthcare background. I have also looked into pharmacy because I am a pharmacy technician and a lot of my experience is within pharmacy, but the job market and what they do does not really interest me. I have also looked into nursing because I learned about the many different options that nurses can choose from and there is a nurse administration option. Currently, I might be leaning to the nursing option because I am just done with school and it might be like you said, confidence based, but my parents keep fighting back and are sad to see me waste my potential because they can easily see me doing medical school and especially dental school, they don't want me to just resort to nursing. I told them medical school will never happen because I have finally come to terms that I do not want to do medical school, but I am still debating between dental and nursing, and they are definitely pushing for dental now. I grew up with a Christian background and I have slightly faded from Christ starting middle school because I think that is when I started just relying on myself. I have never asked Him what he has planned for me because I just felt like that is what I choose for myself, but after hearing your story and how similar it is to mine in timeline, in personality, in faith, in interests, and in history. I just feel like my path is almost the same to yours in one way or another and I should actually try praying to Him about this. I think in your timeline I am in the position of your senior year with a 3.3 GPA and because of Covid-19, I have dropped almost all of my extracurriculars and have continued to gym regularly. I thankfully will not go through the efforts of all of those MCAT tests that you took and the masters program, but I might buckle down and try getting immaculate grades for the last half of my dental school requirements if I do dental. I'm also heavily thinking of nursing because I don't want to spend all of my twenties in school. To hear that you are turning 30 soon and so content with life (I searched your channel and watched your "what I wish I knew before I turned 20 video" so fast after my mom sent me this video haha), I'm afraid I will regret my college years and twenties like I did with my high school experience if I spend it all on school like I did in high school. I think the reason for my long comment is that your story really did hit home because it is exactly what I am going through and to see your life is like the light at the end of the tunnel, it is inspiring to see, especially from someone so relatable with the same kind of ethnic and religious background along with similar academic timeline. I also just want to ask what you think of my situation. I'm not sure if I should go to nursing and graduate with a double major in Health, Society, and Policy + Nursing w/ Sociology minor by 24 and enjoy the rest of my twenties working, traveling, making memories, etc or to apply and start dental school when I'm 24 years old and be out of school by 28 with not much time left in my twenties. I'm currently 21, turning 22 in one month and I feel like time is running out when I know and people keep telling me I have time.

Hello Christina! Thank you for sharing your life story with me - reading how things have been for you, I too can relate to your experience and the pressure to 'figure it out' sooner than later to relieve this constant anxiety that comes from uncertainty. I first want to encourage you to take a deep breath, leave your burdens before our Heavenly Father who knows you far deeper than you may even realize about yourself, and pray & surrender both choices (nursing or dental) to Him and see which door He opens. The decision is ultimately up to you of course, and not having met you in person I'm careful to recommend one way or the other. All I know is I too like you, have business aspirations and it's part of why I pursued dentistry over other medical fields. Maybe it's my leadership experience and my life philosophy, I ultimately want to be my own boss and open my own dental office in a few years where I can create my own hours, pricing, work culture, etc. When I gave up being premed, I too have considered hospital administration with my public health degree (I have double majored in bio and Health:Science, Society, and Policy - the latter major sounds very similar to yours!). However, I realized being in admin role is like playing chess- there's a lot of potential compromise to make with different players of the shared decision to be made, weighing a lot of pros and cons. The other players of the hospital such as medical doctors, CEO, staff etc will often question your credibility in a diploma-focused, traditional culture. In my leadership experience I quickly burned out with the politics of it all, and knew I just wanted things my way and just open my own office some day xD. But not everyone is like that, some people enjoy negotiating and finding a perfect middle ground and solutions too, you know? I can only speak from my experience I suppose ^^; Secondly, I want to say, 22 is SO young! You don't need to figure it all out right now and your life, in the grand scheme of 80+ years of life on earth, is still just about to unfold. I did turn 30 and did my youth, energy, etc all end? My life with the career that I am so happy with, is just about to start and I am LIVING it now. I wouldn't let your age dictate your decisions especially if this is comparing 2 years of school versus 4. Once I graduate and become a dentist, I can carve out my own vacation time at my own private practice some day with a bigger budget I can afford that will actually give me a quality vacation xD I've always thought to myself, life is grander when it is earned and timely. Rush the process, and it's hard to enjoy it fully - my 20s I did spend trying to make fancy things happen at a cost and I've always regretted spending money I didn't have. Choose what makes you feel fulfilled and worthwhile rather than make decisions to live your life in the 20s. I never once think my life ended because I'm in my 30s lol a lot of ppl dont even believe I'm 30! haha~ Memories and good times is subjective and try to fit that THROUGHOUT your life rather than settling for something that may not be your true calling just to be 'done' with that chapter earlier in your 20s. This would be different if you truly think nursing is it for you, then you get both :) Honestly, 2 extra years is not bad and time flies by~ entry level salary will be $125-150k for dentists, just FYI and it's only gonna go up from there. Hope that answered some questions and praying that you will trust God in the process!!

Hi Gloria! Thank you so much for posting this video❤️ I found it very encouraging because I am in a similar situation as you were back then. I also don’t feel satisfied about my undergraduate and graduate GPA. However, I am continually pushing through and will be applying to dental schools this cycle! I did have one question about the section where you talk about applying to other health professional schools. I’ve applied to a few dental hygiene programs a few months ago (I thought maybe I would take courses as a dental hygiene student to enhance my application) but never completed the application because I felt I should just work on other ways to improve my application for dental schools. On the application, would that be considered as applying to health professional schools? Would this negatively affect my application? Because I never had the goal of becoming a dental hygienist; I mainly applied because I thought taking dental courses will improve my GPA since my undergraduate and graduate GPA were not satisfying. I’m sorry if this comment is extremely long😅 but thank you so much for providing helpful tips & advice. I look forward to future videos!

Ahh thank you so much for your kind words!! I’m glad you can relate to my story 🥰 I see what you mean! Hmm I think this is up to you, because a lot of ppl do consider working as a hygienist to boost their app. If you never completed the application it also means you didn’t completely commit to the path and I think if you explain that on your app they will understand. At the same time because it wasn’t complete I wonder if it’s worth mentioning since you never got to actually go through the whole application cycle... either way I can tell you were doing this for dental school app, so I don’t think it will count against you and is up to you! Hope that helped answer your question and I’m rooting for ya! 😍
