I have just discovered this channel. I got into gaming back in 1985 with a SNES console and The Legend of Zelda. Now at 74 I have a games room with every console since then and a large collection of RPGs. It was really refreshing to hear the story of another senior gamer. Keep up the good work!

I am an elder techie too! 10 years ago I lost my big brother at just 59 years old. I had taken time from work to care for him and a week before he passed I was fired from that job. I lost my brother, my job, my car... And nearly lost myself. My grandson was into Minecraft and I learned that I could get an Xbox and play with him online - so I decided to give it a try. We spent hours playing and having a blast building magnificent castles and roller coaster mine carts... With headsets so we could talk to each other. At one point I was playing with my grandson and 4 or 5 other 6-8 year olds when he said "grandma that's awesome!" And one of the other boys said "That's not a grandma! Grandmas don't play Xbox!" Lol it was a good laugh. My grandson is now 16 and driving... He's not into gaming much anymore... But I've continued and settled on Fallout 4 - a single player game with battles against ghouls and super mutants. My health has declined in the past years as I've aged. Now I appreciate the fact that I can jump, run, battle bad guys and win! It's great emotional therapy. I'm glad to "meet" another older gamer! May you defeat evil and be victorious in all your endeavors!

i guess every people is different but still find it strange that he is 16 and out from gaming.. i love gaming now when im 35, almost as much as i loved when i was 10. its different of course the magic has faded in many ways and i see it different too ( more and more with a developer eye and less with a consumer's ) but i still love gaming very much. anyway i hope you can multiplay with him again sometime soon!

I sincerely believe that in 30 ish years, one of the biggest forms of entertaining in retirement communities will be gaming. Perfect for moderately disabled old folks. Doesn't take up much room. Can be a community activity with onlookers heckling the player. Or can be with multi-player games

I mean this with all sincerity, I always told myself I was someone who would never need mental health services. However, near the start of the pandemic, my mother and father both caught Covid (back in the scary days pre-vaccine; they are both healthy and vaccined now!), starting a new (and demanding) job, and buying a house, I very nearly had a psychotic break. I wasn't sleeping and for the first time in my life, was experiencing crippling anxiety. So, I found myself seeking counseling. Without a doubt, it literally made me able to deal with all the insanity in my life. Just having someone who wasn't family (and for the record, I had a very strong and robust support system with my family) tell me that: Yeah, there are all kinds of insane things happening in your life and that it is perfectly normal for you to feel stressed to the max; here are some coping strategies that can help. And they did. Counseling is beyond useful, even if you consider yourself a strong, resilient person.

As a game developer, this is one of the biggest reasons why I make games. I think games have more credit they we give them for being able to help people mentally, and if it's even just for a couple of minutes, where we can immerse someone and make them forget their worries, that is a win in my book. It is a truly powerful medium to tell stories and build communities. If our games can help someone, or inspire someone to make games themselves, I think it is a really beautiful thing. @Ruaidhrí Ryan Yes, it's especially intimidating considering how difficult it can be to learn something completely new & complex as one's mind gets older, one's body picks up cumulative injuries, and when one is decades out of practice when it comes to learning. It's one of those things though, that can drastically change one's life for the better, and is completely worth experiencing - even if it's just getting a Switch and goofing around doing sidequests in Zelda! I also had a similar experience to you; that anxiety that you're going to get mercilessly crushed & teabagged by all the young whippersnappers in multiplayer, and actually ending up consistently dominating, simply due to old muscle memory. 25 years after I last played the original Street Fighter 2; I was _very_ tipsy at a house party full of 20-somethings half my age - and though I didn't know any of the flashy new characters, abilities, or what the extra bars meant - I simply couldn't lose. The owner of the house even invited new people over, _specifically_ to beat me. 😄 They lost too! I don't think anyone there was as surprised as I was.

I'm 74 and started playing WOW the year after release. I realized that admitting my age had my fellow raiders thinking they had to explain things twice to me. But in the 20-man raids, I played the go-to shadow priest, and became the chief strategist for the guild raids. I've got end-game characters in virtually every MMORPG, although I have taken on the persona of my 40yo son so I can avoid the celebrity status of being in m golden years.

67 year old woman from Norway. Got into gaming through my son many years ago. First game was Warcraft (not WoW). From there I enjoyed Rpgs, wargames and adventure. I played Star wars online for 7 years (Eclipse), and I still miss it, darn you Sony! Love Diablo games, Vanguard, The Elder Scrolls, definately Skyrim, Realms of the Haunting and other horror games, just to name a few. Now I'm lazy playing Rok on my tablet. I enjoy the social stuff. It's nice to be part of an international community where nobody cares about age, skincolor, politics or religion. We are just people.

Warcraft II was the first RTS I played at a classmate's house in Elementary school around the time of release. As somebody old enough to have experienced the tail-end of DOS games, I miss the "Big Box" releases with proper manuals and extra goodies, I don't miss having to mess around with DOS config files to free up enough memory though, lol. If you like Diablo 2, they re-released Diablo II ~1 month ago on the PC/Switch/PS4/XB1 etc. as "Diablo II Resurrected"- same gameplay with much better graphics and able to run at a much higher framerate.

This made me cry, only because it reminded me of my late mother. She used to watch me play games. She really enjoyed it just watching and was never a backseat driver. She watching me play through all of Ocarina of Time, all of Mario 64 and Starfox 64. Also Shenmue. Every so often she would point something out, I might have missed or mention how beautiful the scenery was. So even now when I play those particular games it’s bittersweet. I really miss her, but sometimes when I play Ocarina of Time or Mario I feel a little bit closer to her. I still miss her so much.

It’s such a culture shock seeing an older woman with anime style posters on her wall. I know what you mean about gaming and depression. Persona 5 got me through a lot. Even when I couldn’t play I would listen to “beneath the mask” on repeat. I never beat it, got stuck on the last boss. I’ve been meaning to play through royal, but I gave my ps4 to my buddy who was still using a ps3, in the current year. I play on pc now, so I hope Atlus ports more games to pc. Which they just may, there’s been some developments on that front recently.

for everyone with depresion i would recomend playing a litle bit of minecraft solo, and learning a bit, then finding small smp server best if not p2w, on most of these servers everyone is very welcomed, people are looking for enyone to play with and they have very fruendly communities that can really change your life. Its great expirience logging another day to a server, looking at chat for all of hello's and hi's, then just playing with other people developing projects with them making others favours and all of the beautyfull expirense of another world in the game.

But I suppose I could pirate the .iso, I do still own my copy of the game, so I don't suppose it would be illegal, though maybe I would have to download the PS4 version for it to be really within the lines of the law, but I don't think there's a PS4 emulator out there yet that can run it. I'll have to give the PS3 version a try. Do you need a really beefy system to run it? I'm using a RX580, with 8GB of VRAM.

I got my mother into playing games finally when she was in her late 60's. There were a good few years where she was having a blast playing Rimworld, Mount And Blade Warband, Stardew Valley and others. Unfortunately she had a severe stroke that left her with essentially a learning disability that makes it difficult for her to learn how to play any new games. Now she can only play Animal Crossing and Pokemon. A lot of elderly people think they're too old to learn to play video games, or that they're for children. Neither is true.

Love hearing your story! I’m a 61 yr old gamer girl myself. I’ve been an avid gamer since my grandpa bought me the first Atari console and a 12 inch b/w tv for Christmas the year it launched in 1977. I was hooked the very first moment I turned it on and have played near daily since. My kids grew up playing and we spent most nights playing games together as a family. My son and I still play together online and spend lots of time messaging each other about games. I’ve also gotten all 5 of my grandchildren into gaming. I bought them all tvs and PS4s for their bedrooms and I pay for their ps plus memberships as well as new games for Christmas and birthdays. They are jelous their Grammy and uncle have PS5s now and are hinting hard they need an upgrade for Christmas. Guess I better get started buying those soon lol. I love gaming and I’m very thankful for the closeness it has brought to our family. It has given us a commonality we might not otherwise have had. All 3 generations of our family play and talk together online near daily because of gaming and I wouldn’t change a thing 🙂

It feels good to see other people you wouldn’t expect to play any games be playing such a diverse set of games that I don’t even know about, and that’s what I find so cool. She literally has more taste than me for games and media haha. It’s always fun to find people who are in all the stereotypes, not the type to even pick up a controller getting curious and then gaining an understanding for how many of us younger folks see the world. I think it’s a great common ground that can be built upon and bring us closer, forming connections over common interests and understanding that leads to many great stories and experiences to be made from an ever wider range of background. And let’s be real, seeing new people and unexpected people having fun and maybe even being there to help is fun by extension. Puts a smile on my face to help others in say Battlefield, talk to a new low rank player and help them understand a few things, and watch them begin to flourish in the environment that might have been frustrating before.

My wife works with retired priests in a huge building as a nurse. She's a recreation activity person. She was asking me for some ideas to keep the old men active. I went to her work one day with an old Atari 2600 and my old Nintendo for "Game Day". These guys loved it. Most of them are over 75. They now play video games everyday now as part of their hand eye coordination exercises. That was two years ago and my consoles have never left. We bought a few super gameboy's so they can take to those to their rooms if they want.

I'm a 17 year old boy, and my first few gaming experiences were all edutainment games for kids. The first few meaningful ones were Halo 3, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Team Fortress 2, and Pikmin. Yeah, ignore those immature kids & toxic people. It's the older generation that gave us gaming & are still creators of games, so why can't they also play if it's their hobby. It's great if you can game and still do what you like age shouldn't matter! I always liked it a lot and had a lot of fun when I sometimes met 3 generations or older people playing in some MMO's I played in the past in my younger days (teens-twenties). I left this comment on a dumb reddit thread: The majority of girl gamers I’ve personally gotten to know through playing World of Warcraft, some are way more hardcore about it than I am. I have an ex that got really big into Overwatch and Diablo 3. Another girl gamer friend that’s trying to convince me to play Hades. Girlfriend Reviews, a KZbin channel, absolutely loved Doom: Eternal. And today I watched an IGN review from a woman who tried Halo Infinite and is excited about it. I also remember Gears of War having a "surprise" female fan base for how much gore the game has. Gaming has never been gendered in my world. There’s just gamers and non-gamers.

Girls have always been a part of gaming. but putting your gender in front of it is an active attempt at separating yourself from the original group. A lot of these attitudes towards non gamers. spawn from the time that you would simply be ostracized or bullied. wich was in gaming's infancy, same with how you got bullied hard for being a nerd. To me, it is always amazing. My grandmother, who is gone now, used to play Tetris on a LCD system that was so very common in 90's onward I guess. I think I forgot it to her place, did not like Tetris as a kid much, and it ended up her's. Someone even cleaned that old old thing because it was slowing down from too much of use or something. I play Tetris these days more, but it started as thinking about my passed away grandmother in a way, thinking what she saw, when I was younger and did not "see". There is lot of narcissistic tendency in gaming, where you are in it to feel like a winner, often literally by winning some game or something. The social gaming these days tends to minimize communication but keep people hooked on "winning" or one upping over others that is there tends to manifest in such weird ways.

I am 57, and started PC gaming when my son was 13. He thought it was hilarious to watch mom spin around and punch zombies in Minecraft. I couldn't ever find the sword. Over time I got better and better, and one day remember him looking at one of my worlds and was totally amazed at the power system I had built/created. I play a few other games, but am in desperate need of rebuilding or buying a new gaming PC. The last 7 years have made this one obsolete. It is nice to see there are others out there that are my age and above who enjoy gaming!

My main VN library is for the Vita, and I'm only now beginning to catch up with titles on the Switch - some of which are ports from the Vita, such as the excellent Code: Realize. and Collar X Malice, both of which I always recommend and everybody loves. I recently bought Olympia Soiree, and Cafe Enchante is also on my shopping list. Both have had excellent reviews and feedback from friends, so they should be worth looking into. Cupid Parasite has just released and there is a review on DigitallyDownloaded.net for it. Seems it's strong on humour. My grandmother had bad cataracts in her later years, but she loved playing the Final Fantasy series. She would sometimes come to a spot in the game where she could not see the screen well, the graphics were just to dark. My 12 year old cousin would come home from school, sling his bag on his front porch, then run next door to help her get through the "dark parts". They were so close, it was wonderful.

As a 34yo man, over the past few years I've really started to struggle with being able to switch off when gaming. There's this unwanted feeling that I should be persuing something more productive with my time. My life is in order for the most part. The bills are paid on time, I own everything I want, have a good relationship and have disposible income, but there's always this nagging feeling that I should be striving for something more nowadays. This video was fantastic and helped remind me that time spent doing something you enjoy (within reason) isn't at all wasted. I hope I can learn to live in the present more often, and find the joy in whats in front of me like gaming has done for you, without worrying too much about where I will be in 10 years time. Grass is greener syndrome can be a real pain!

Unless you are truly neglecting necessities in your life, whatever you enjoy,(art, music,reading ,gaming, kissing...) you should be able to enjoy without GUILT! Hey there! If this lack of feeling has been going on for that long, I really recommend finding a good psychiatrist. I'm 30 and really wish I found one in my teens. It sounds like you could have a depressive disorder of some sort or maybe a condition that has depression as a symptom (I won't try to be detailed since I'm not a doctor). Working on getting that under control early will do you a ton of good. Don't be scared of it, either. Your brain is an organ just like any other, and mental health conditions are just conditions, same as any other thing you would go to the doctor for. Keep on digging into games and engaging with them. They have gotten me through hard times. Whenever you feel like you can, add in another thing you know you have liked, and try actively engaging with that for a while. You've got this, and keep on digging into games! If you haven't played them yet, play Persona 5 and, if you can access a Vita, Persona 4 Golden. I think they might be very good for where you are right now.

I'm only 18 and have been gaming pretty much my whole life, but I love how gaming can have such an equally powerful effect on people of all ages and backgrounds. You talked about how Atelier Ayesha helped you through a hard time, and it really struck a chord with me. Part of the reason I love RPGs so much (JRPGs in particular) is because, for me at least, no other genre can so consistently reach into your heart with powerful characters and stories, worlds you want to experience every aspect of, et cetera. April of 2021 through this March (2022) was a really, really hard time in my life. In order to protect myself emotionally/cope with what was going on, I began to dissociate from my emotions lest they become too overwhelming. Starting from this March, things started to improve again, but that defense mechanism had buried itself into my psyche by then. I felt pretty much entirely emotionally numb - I would still experience feelings of course, but they weren't typically even close to intense, or even what you'd expect to be a normal level. No media I consumed nor any experience I had was able to break through it, even ones that really should have were I in my normal emotional state of being. Then, starting a couple months ago, I began to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3. You talked about how some people need something to help guide them through their negative emotions in a safe environment, and this is precisely what 3 was for me. I've been a Xenoblade fan for several years (though not as long as you have, actually!), but this game was able to reach me on a level none of the others had, and it was in the course of playing it that I was finally able to cry for probably the first time in over a year - the emotional power of the game's characters and story were able to break through that barrier I had instinctually erected in my psyche to protect myself when nothing else could for months and months. To add to that, the arcs of several of the characters and even some of the game's primary thematic messaging helped me really begin to process some of my own feelings. I'll forever be grateful for this game helping me begin to move forward and start truly healing - already, I find myself actually happy and excited about life rather than just borderline content at most - I'm no longer just going through the motions, but looking forward to, treasuring, and doing my best to take advantage of each moment. I've still got a lot of work to do on myself, obviously, but I'm really and truly hopeful about what's to come for the first time in a good while. Thanks so much for sharing your story, and I'm so glad we can all share this wonderful medium together!

Going into the new console generation, a load of analysts were predicting that console gaming was going to die, and that mobile gaming would replace it. I'm almost 27, and have been a gamer since I was 6. I've been told I'm not boyish enough to play games, or "are you ever going to give up gaming?" "Isn't it time to stop?" No. Gaming is reading but different. You're playing a story instead of reading about somebody else who "lived it" (theoretically). There is room for both! Don't ever let anyone decide what you get to like when you like it. I have a collection of squishmallows, gaming attire, 2 gaming setups for myself and my fiance, consoles, my switch, you name it. I basically move from one game to the next. It is nice to get out but for an introvert like myself, gaming is my safe space to end the day ❤️❤️❤️ game as long as you love it.

I’ve been a musician for many years. DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you it’s “hard” if you don’t start early. The problem isn’t you, it’s how music is often taught. Do we learn how to read BEFORE we learn how to speak? No! But when we approach music, most teachers try to teach the music theory before just letting the student play by ear. FIRST, play around and learn how to play what you like by ear. Later, learn the theory. Proper physical technique will make playing easier, but if you relax and let your body and hands feel the instrument, you’ll naturally begin to discover proper technique. Lessons are good, but they don’t have to be the starting point.

I got into gaming as a young kid. My dad had an Atari and NES. I remember being like 3 and playing Sesame Street games and Mario on it. I took a long break in the early to mid 2000s because everything seemed like FPS games. I played casually some but recently in 2016ish came back into gaming in a big way after getting clean from drugs. It has helped me immensely to stay clean. I have over 4 years clean now!

It's never too old to start playing games. My grandpa has been getting back into gaming recently. He used to play many classics like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Diablo 1 & 2, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, etc. He was intrigued seeing me play Metroid Dread when I went to visit recently and we both started geeking out it was pretty cool. I think I surprised him that I've even played some of the games he used to play. I never realized how much into technology he was, looks like I take after him quite a lot also being very interested in technology. He told me how he used to dump games on the N64. Back then it was a total chore to dump games. You had to use a parallel cable, a game shark, and have the right software and hardware to run the games. It always warms my heart to see elderly get into gaming whether that be games like Animal Crossing, or more hardcore like Halo. I'm glad that it's more normal then ever to play video games now. If my grandpa is reading this, thank you for getting me into gaming at the young age of 2-3 with the Gameboy Color, SNES, and N64. There has been a lot of games that have changed my life. If you're reading this, have a great -day- -month- -year- life.

Unh... is your grandpa like, 40 years old or less? Because those are pretty much the games we grew up with, and that was like, barely 20 years ago only..... How old is he? or better yet, how new is he?

Thank you for making this video. I am also a female gamer in my 60's though I have been gaming since my late 20's so my perspective may be a bit different having quite a long gaming history. It is so unbelievably good to hear from another 60+ female gamer. I will have to try some of the Neptunia games ... I have also played most of the Tales game and a few of the Atelier games and am a fan of both.

Wow that's amazing.. so you must have started gaming from the very start in the industry in the late 70s or early 80s? and never gave up on them? very nice. I too hope i'll still be gaming when ill be in my 60s or even 70s

I almost cried when I looked at the woman in the thumbnail and read the title. That is so lovely that someone who we think of as being "out of touch" discovers and grows with the technology of the world and comes to an understanding with my generation that grew up with everything around us changing and rapidly advancing constantly. Gaming is beautiful. It is art. It is our fantasy worlds in our heads given form and visual medium. With games, we can see each others dreams.

I feel gaming takes you away from a deep depression, my wife had a miscarriage last year. she was devastated about it , because it was going to be our first child. We were just done with everything in our own minds. One day I purchased it a game called Sakura wars for the ps4. She loved it , she finished it more than once .she also got into building models kits and I got her the mechas for Sakura wars models kit.we still talked about it what happen last year , we don’t get sad about we actually get more courage and keep going for one day we will be future parents , for the meantime we just enjoying playing games and spending time together.

The algorithm brought me here but I stayed for the way you articulate everything so beautifully. I remember as a kid playing Golden Ax and Streets Of Rage on the Sega Genesis with my grandpa and siblings. Even though we were kids still learning our way the controller, he was always so patient and encouraging. He was a pro at Super Mario Bros, he liked to show us how he could beat the entire thing without collecting a mushroom. When I got a N64, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time was the first game I truly played and fell in love with. My grandpa would go out and buy us new games and game guides even though he himself stopped playing. Even if he didn’t play anymore, he still supported us. So many early mornings we would cut into his time watching The Andy Griffith show to play on his tv. I’ll always be thankful for that. This was such a nice and welcome reminder to visit and try to coax him into a few run throughs of the games we used to play to knock off some of that rust. Thank you 💜
