Just because this guy says that he did 20 ap classes and 20 different extra curriculars and was the best at whatever ... doesnt mean you have to do the same thing he did. They're looking for people that are unique not copiers. Just because you do everything and anything doesn't mean you're unique. Yes some things are mandatory like excellent grades, being involved in the community, and high SAT scores. But taking 20 AP classes and doing 30 different math clubs is not necessary at all. I know people who have gotten in with much less work. The key point to take away from this is not to do what others do. Do what you like/love. If you dont like doing math clubs, dont do them. If you prefer doing sports, do it. Dont try to be someone you're not to impress a college. At the end of the day theres a good amount of people who never went to Harvard, or college at all, and are doing better than Harvard grads. Harvard isnt the secret to success its merely a better chance of being successful faster.

I REALLY enjoyed the video. I am female and from Germany and studied at Heidelberg and Frankfurt Main Universities with 2 masters (main subjects: Art History, and Art Education with minor subjects Musicology and Economics) and a bachelor (Educational science). Here in Germany, being versatile is not really welcome for application- really a contrast to the States. My main focus has eber been art and music and I am also a very passionate singer, who did a large number of extra courses for this, I also play cello, piano and renaissance lute. I am also a visual artist. AND I invented my own form of make up (I am also a make up artist as a second job, which I NEVER studied- I taught myself- art studying has helped me A LOT). I am also a passionate athlete (weight lifter and dancer- I even do a further education as a dance teacher at the moment) and speak fluent 5 languages: german, english, italian, french, spanish, and a bit chinese and also a bit swahili. I work for an insurance at the moment, and am a freelancer for: teaching art, wedding singing, tour guiding and make up artist (all works well). Germans are definitely not as open for versatility as US does when applying for university or a job. Instead, it is fairly important to seem straight forward and specialized-focused. Instead, I like the idea of being versatile as the meaning of: creative, open minded and independent, and unique/ special in your own way- inventing your own business, which nobody did before you. Creativity is just intelligence- the more impressions the brain get, the more synapses it can develop- and that makes you more survivable und at least successful. Humanity only suvived because of creativity, curiosity and following: INVENTIONS!!! Being active starts in your mind and sport can help, also the idea of being an athelete AND the fitter your body is, the fitter, competitive and successful, your brain can also be in an integral way (includes meditation, sleep, nutrition, honest self relection, emotional intelligence etc) When doing art, I also love combining all of my own disciplines: singing, drawing, dancing, stage design etc - as a total work of art and MY new form of it. Totally a different world to my experiences, what your guest is talking about.

Fun fact: In the Czech Republic (that's where I live) there are basically 3 degrees that are equal: Mgr = Eng = MUDr. The first one stands for humanities, the second one is for engineers and the last one is for doctors (medics) and all of them are equal to masters degree (For some reason, in the CR we distinguish them). And my point is that in the CR economists get the Eng one, so technically here, Andy would still be engineer. Therefore he isn't different from his parents.

Guys, this man is an overachiever (20 ap classes really?!). I don't recommend doing as much as he did it will lead to stress and burnout. Just find a few extracurricular activities you're interested in, try to get good at those. Also, you really don't need to take that many AP classes, just a few should be fine. Really just have a solid GPA, high test scores, hobbies you're good at, and a way to stand out. Good luck everyone!

Hey ik its been while since you posted your "How I Got Into Harvard" video but, I going into sophomore year in Highschool and have always wanted to go to Harvard, but I gave up on that dream until recently. I am the president of a club and a treasurer of another. I have a 3.5 GPA (which I know is not good) but I am going to change that in the following years. I do track and XC and play a religious instrument that is pretty rare to play in America. I also feel like my religion would make pop out more than other students since its kinda unique. I am 15 years old, I am now in the 9th grade (only 11), my dream is to enter Harvard after the 11th grade. Someone, please tell me, I know Chinese, English, Spanish, Russian (this is my native language), but every year I will study another new language; I write books (so far 16 pieces, but one more is added every month), I used to do rock climbing. But I don't have diplomas, certificates and all that. All these classes will be counted as extracurricular activities or what should I do? And another thing: I plan to enter the finance faculty there, but I don't have any hobbies with finance at all, I just like this job. So, in an essay, I can write about the languages that I know and about writing, and it won't be strange that my chosen profession is not connected with this at all? Just do not write so that I don't study in this university, I will achieve my goal

20 practice tests in a week and reviewing your answers and studying each incorrect answer is impossible, unless he didn’t sleep. 4 hour tests + at least 2-4 hours of thorough review and study and re testing per test = 120-160 hours (168 hours in a week)
@Alex-r4v2j5 жыл бұрын
you're assuming 2-4 hours of thorough review and study and re testing per test. if his initial SAT scores were so bad that he needed 2-4 hours of that per test, then i doubt he would've gotten a perfect score. 4 hr tests + 1hr review = 5hr/test. 20 tests = 100 hours. 1 week = 168 hours. 68 hours leftover (5-7 hours of sleep per day + 2-4 hours of breaks, leisure, food, etc. per day)
@kyamb38902 жыл бұрын
He could only take the reading and writing section also, for example. That’s what I did once I knew I got 800s on math every time. So he could spend maybe 2 hours per test and 1 hour for review = 3*20 = 60 hours so 108 hours left over plenty of time to sleep 8-10 hours and have feee time left over

Lots of people get into respectable universities from bad schools. Don't let your circumstances decide where you'll go.
@dancerswithtalent59015 жыл бұрын
Leslie M I agree! It’s just difficult when you’re surrounded by people who don’t want to work hard and of course we are missing out on things that private school kids get. Thanks so much!
@lesliem92715 жыл бұрын
@@dancerswithtalent5901 Yeah it is harder, especially for getting into schools of Harvard's calibre. There's a lot of other respectable universities that are not as good but still pretty good, like the one I'm in (University of British Columbia). Since you're willing to work hard and do whatever it takes, I don't think you'll have much of a problem getting into a top 100 university as long as you have the right mindset. Find people who are hardworking and talented, and surround yourself with them. Again, don't let your circumstances determine you. My life improved significantly after I learned to take control over my life rather than letting my circumstances control it. Best of luck!

I hope this doesn't sound bad... but I feel like Asian students have pushed the bar up on competition at US schools too much. I went to a top engineering school and it was basically all asian and they studied like they would die if they didn't get straight A's. You have to basically finish half of college in HS and do completely flawlessly to have a shot at these top schools now. I don't see the benefit of any of this or think that it makes well rounded people. I met so many neurotic people in college with terrible social skills, me included. We shouldn't incentivize people to live their teenage years like this.
