Yes. I read somewhere that some colleges require you to take a minimum number of AP classes (although I also read that if you can't financial afford them, you don't have to). But don't quote me on this topic, I'm still a freshman and my school haven't told me anything about college. I mostly research on Google. Hope this helps.

Usually if you're in a public school the AP classes are free, at least where I'm from. If the school you're in provides them, and you have the grades to be accepted into them, then you can sign up next year.

Getting into Harvard ... - passion for what you love - amazing in school
@aaron.03037 жыл бұрын
Examples of extracurriculars that help you get into Harvard: Boys/Girls Nation (not state...nation), Eagle Scout, Debate Team Captain, Sports Team Captain, Class President or Student Body President, Black belt in a martial art, Cheerleading Captain (yes, cheerleading really helps), creating phone apps or other software that becomes popular (especially if you're a girl), having scientific research published in a peer-reviewed journal with you as a lead author, being conductor of an orchestra. Starting clubs or organizations doesn't help much because it's very common nowadays. 20-30 years ago, it helped a little. Basically, find a couple of activities you're really interested in and go after the top level of leadership and accomplishment in those couple of activities. Things that really don't help much for Harvard: Starting a club or organization that you are "president" of (unless it's something that really became big on a state or national level, not just your school), volunteering, tutoring, mentoring, random clubs (FBLA, HOSA, chess club, math club, etc.), summer camps and programs (unless they are extremely selective and prestigious like TASP or Research Science Institute...usually those types of programs are free), and "leadership programs/retreats/institutes." In the summer, it would be better to take challenging courses (in Calculus, English Lit, U.S. History, etc.) at a nearby 4-year university and get As in them...that would look good, especially if the courses are in the subject you plan on concentrating (i.e. majoring) in at Harvard. Hopefully you have near-perfect (or perfect) grades and test scores. Being #1 or #2 in your class looks good. If you've taken AP or IB exams, it looks good to show them a bunch of 5s (or 7s on IB exams), and nothing below a 4 (6 on IB). It helps (a little) to be from an underrepresented state like Mississippi or Wyoming. It helps to express interest in an unpopular concentration like Linguistics or Anthropology, especially if your interest for that subject shows in your essays or activities. It helps to be a girl interested in a STEM major as long as your grades and test scores strongly back up your STEM ability. Oh, and if you're poor or even middle class (family income less than ~$70k or so), that helps quite a bit. Incorporate that into your essays somehow. Yes, they could just look on your FAFSA form to see your family's income, but they really like kids from poor or middle class (not upper middle, haha) backgrounds. They like kids who overcame adversity or lack of opportunities in their communities and schools. This won't overcome less than great grades and test scores, but it will definitely help. And if you don't get in, it's fine, really. Harvard (or Yale or any other school) is FAR from a guarantee of any success in life. You will have to make your own success in life regardless of where you graduate from college.

Aditi Patel hi, I am from india too, actually all we could do here is get great marks in academics and STUDY STUDY STUDY, thats what we are taught from elementary days. Doing charity is actually not me but my father, i help him sometimes with that, as stephanie said, they're not looking for clones, its basically your STORY, your EXPERIENCE, which makes you unique, do you think harvard would take me if i was in my school choir or did charity or was a district champ or a NTSE scholar? NO they're are thousands of students out there BETTER than this, it may happen that in the end you end up getting into harvard (i hope) and all others bragging about what they did, wont. you are also having that ONE EXPERIENCE, no one had, they're thousands of studentd who are in school choir, swimming champs of districts even states, or national merit scholars (NTSE scholar in india) out there, who will DEFINITELY send their application to harvard; but if its nothing new, or trite (it basically depends on the particular admission officer), they will be rejected. and you here crying about your lack of extarcurricular swim right into open gates. *_All i wan to say is never underestimate yoursrlf and do what your heart says to you, mine said that go and help those who once suffered, or are suffering, through the stories your parents told you 3 years back each night, i did and my parents supported me, especially my dad being an engieneer and a social worker, never held me Back_* Bottom Line:- *_do whatever you want and never over or underestimate yourself, you are BETTER than those millions of applicants out there, believe it_* bye, tks

Here’s the secret take it easy when you get to high school most colleges will reject students who are straight out of high school anyways. If you want to go to impressive schools go to a community college because it’s a restart button colleges don’t care about your high school grades or your SAT and ACT scores, by that point so they only look at what your grades are in community college. If you do extremely well you can get into very good colleges. For example, i have a friend who was 2 years older then me and he had a gpa of 3.1. He went to community college, did really well there, and got into UCLA which is one of the top 3 public colleges in the world. Don’t worry about getting into a four year straight away look at all your options and find out what’s the best one for the situation you are in when you become a senior.

You can get into Top universities without taking APs or extracurriculars through your chances are low compared to other applicants. Most universities like Harvard or MIT (this two actually require them) asks you to take SAT and minimum of two SAT subject test, you should check out their website for more information. If you want to increase your chances I would recommend doing some activities outside of your school like volunteering in a hospital (this a good option for you, if you can, because it shows commitment), you also don't need to participate in many stuff, just find something that interests you and mean something special so your essay can be meaningful. Also, you can self-study for APs (and SATs of course) if you willing to, but be prepared to spend a lot of time (I self-study for both SAT and 8 APs). Worth to mention that taking SATs and AP is expensive so Harvard, for example, accept students without taking APs and SAT subject tests if your financial situation doesn't allow it. But if you can, Harvard will prefer you to take them as it is their admission requirement (SAT that is). Hope this help you out. Regards!

Please, Please, Please Can you make a guess about why you didn't get into Stan ford?

Probably because my supplemental essays were vapid and lacking in personality. They were impersonal and probably boring. Also, I've noticed that Stanford likes specialists; they want you to be really good in one or two things, not all over the place like I was. I also made the mistake of putting Computer Science as a prospective major without the accomplishments to back it up. Stanford has A LOT of CS applicants.
