How I Got More Power From My Chainsaw! - 1 of 2 - #3

Although I love my little MS211, who isn't looking for a little more power, right? Lugging my big saw all day wears me out and hurts the back. I rely on my little saw for limbing trees, felling small ones, and bucking all but the biggest logs. It's usually my goto saw.
A muffler mod is one of the best ways to improve the performance of your chainsaw. This video shows how I performed the mod on my Stihl MS211 and made it cut 20-25% faster.

On my bigger saws above 42cc change up the exhaust port timing (making it a bit longer) and open up the edges to create more flow.

@@peterbrigham6183 adding the nitro content will lower the combustion temp, then needing a timing adjustment, I have been modding nitro engines for quite a while as well. Never had a hot spot or heat checking from that, with more flow the temps go down if done correctly. The KZbinr here has obviously done his research and knows what he is doing since going after exaust mods it the most effective, easiest, and fastest way to have more gains without sacrificing power on the opposing powerbands.

What 'special' tool do I need for the limiter caps? I have the MS 391, finding content to mod that saw is hard to come by. Thank you.

You can use a screw, such as a drywall screw. Grind off the point a bit otherwise it will stick through the cap before the threads dig in. You want the threads without the sharp point. Stihl also makes a cap puller. 5910 890 4502

Mine already has an exhaust that has open slots in it, and isn't an adjustable carb to my knowledge. It's a 10 on emissions scale, so does it even need the mod? Or is this model not available in California and therefore is better from the factory? It's from a dealer in PA.

Did mm to 441c slot all the across the front and also luver down .. had to add bigger dawgs to keep muff from starting fire too close and open hole straight thru.. tricky.. but power increases rev smooooooth

adding louvers is adding holes ... they are slits that are hooded versus round holes. What do you think is the difference?

Doug H. in VA Both will accomplish the same thing as far as performance is concerned. The louvers just allow me to control the exhaust direction instead of coming straight out a hole.

I did a similar mod to my MS391 with the louvers pointed down like shown in this video... BAD PIZZA... Ran GREAT but, after one tank of gas through it, the hot exhaust pointing down has nowhere to go when you are fully in log except down on the plastic oil tank at the bottom of the muffler. It started melting the plastic of the tank just below the muffler. So I reversed the louvers so they blow the exhaust up. I was worried this would put exhaust in my face but I haven't noticed any fumes or heat getting to me. DON"T point the louvers so the exhaust is blowing down. If you did, check the plastic below it and make sure it isn't damaged. I still am a firm beleiver in muffler mods, they give you more power and actually let the engine run cooler. Just be careful where you point the hot exhaust gases. And for sure re-tune your carb as soon as you do the mm. Both my saws I did mods to had limiters on the high jet screw that had to come off. Each of mine took at least half a turn out on the jet to tune it after the mod.

I don’t think it’s too bad. I didn’t measure the decibel change but wish I would have. I would say it did probably increase some but I would doubt it is even as much as 10% louder.

My non-modified MS211 cuts through most anything wood like a champ👍 My non-modified MS441 Magnum, with a full comp chain, cuts through anything(period) like a boss💪!

a 211 is better than a hand saw but 35cc is not much of a saw if you cut anything bigger than a pop can. 562xp husky is my small saw and a 390 husky is my big saw granted i cut more than than most but would never own a home owner style saw no matter how much i cut. pay the extra money for a pro model as the are way superior and worth the money.

Wayne Johnson I think you’re severely underestimating the 211. I use it as my go to saw for 90+% of the cutting. I only reach for the larger saws if needed. I bucked over 130 trees in a couple months with that saw. A lot of them were fell with that too, but not all because some of them were already down. It’s very impressive for the size and weight, regardless of being a “non pro” saw.

@@JaredsShop i have a ms 260 i got from my dad not a bad saw but no where in the same category as my 562x which of course is bigger by 9 cc but going the the pro model the horse power is so much more. not knocking stihl at all i just do not have a dealer close. in smaller wood there is not a lot of difference in bigger saws and smaller but i do 100 full cord a year and im cutting lot of 20 inch plus trees which are standing dead or storm damaged once you get over 12 inch the difference between 35cc and 60 is huge. same as once you are over 16 inch the difference in my saws is quite obvious, for example in a 24 inch oak its at least 25 seconds a cut. i have compared the 260 to my big saw and it would be 3 to 1 in a 24 inch. pro saws have better components and are ported more to get more power from the same size motor. so what you are doing by muffler mod is giving it more power also and you seem to enjoy doing it so thats what matters most. i am not mechanically gifted so i leave things be or i wreck things.

Wayne Johnson For me it’s kind of the same thing. I have no husky dealers near me (not real ones anyway), but have no less than 3 Stihl within 10 miles and several more within 20 miles. My favorite dealer, who offers me the best support on all products, sells Stihl, Kubota, Woods, etc. I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else just because of their service. If they stopped selling Stihl and started selling Husqvarna you’d see me running Huskies. As much as I love my Stihl products (raised on them), I love my dealer the more. There’s no doubt jumping from 35 to 60 is going to be a massive increase. I’m honestly just very surprised at this little saw, especially compared to other saws even slightly larger. I’d say it easily out-cut a 250 and 271 I used. It’s no match for the 036, 391, or the 461, but I can use this all day without hurting my back. My woods does not have a lot of large trees so getting anything over 20” is rare. When I’m bucking a bunch of 12” trees I find this much easier to run. I’m sure it takes me a bit longer but I’m not sure how much. If I’m cutting some 18s or 20s, I’m using one of bigger saws. I agree, there’s a big difference in cut speed on those. I have a real hard time leaving ANYTHING alone. When I look at something I want to improve it. It’s built into me. My wife says she won’t even help me on a project until I’m on my third iteration. She know I’ll go back after something several times because I can’t help but see how I could’ve done something better. I can’t leave it alone, even if it looks perfect to everyone else, because all I see is what it could/should be. Have a great day!!

E.H. Lipton I don’t regret it one bit. I’m still VERY happy with how it runs after this mod. I know several loggers and arborists that do this to all of their saws. It’s definitely worth it.

It wouldn't hurt to use PTFE on the bar and chain to reduce friction and extend the life of both, less strain on the motor too. I put a little PTFE powder in my bar oil, it doesn't take much.

It's amazing that 10 minutes with a Dremel tool will correct years of two-stroke engine development with dynos, flow meters, and a million other means of analysis. The fact is that measured exhaust restriction raises the real compression ratio and yields better performance than a straight pipe.

For the life of me I can't understand why the highly competitive and performance oriented chainsaw market would unanimously repeat the same simple mistake of over-restrictive exhaust. That builds heat and potentially shortens engine life. When I was young I punched out the baffles in my Triumph Bonneville to make it "sound" faster. You need to validate your gains with some quantifiable test. Then post it.

Paul Slevinsky I already have. I certainly didn’t coin this mod. Tons of competition people do similar mods or buy modded exhaust. Majority of arborists and loggers do this to increase performance of their saws. It’s a proven improvement.

Two-stroke engines use scavenging to make power and are tuned by the exhaust system. Dirt bikes use expansion chamber exhaust systems for maximum power and are either turned for torque or horsepower. Considering chainsaws are direct drive you want torque over high rpms.

Keith Lucas Agreed on the scavenging. Anything you can do to improve torque will help. I don’t recommend taking the saw past stock RPMs unless you have the internals built. I did gain torque with this mod, all the way through the band, and it is adjusted to stay below the stock RPMs.

@@JaredsShop I built race quads by favorite motor is the Yamaha Blaster 195cc 2 stroke. Pretty easy to gain serious hp on almost any 2 stroke. With such a small bore and stroke heres what I would do... Shave the head a few thousands, run a high compression gasket, stage 4 port n polish as well as advance the timing maybe 2-4 degrees max, build a custom fatty pipe tuned for torque, build a custom reed cage & spacer to actually run a set of torque reeds with a 26mm flat slide carb... Lol that little sucker will twist 10k all day everyday hahaha. Run klotz r50 with a minimum of 95-97octane or mix race fuel with premium pump gas to stop pre det... Let me know it goes. Might cost ya a grand😀 oh almost forgot file those raker teeth down at least 1/8th inch.... Hold.on tight and no plung cuts..😀😀😀

When I took my muffler off my Ms181 chainsaw I expected to see a spark arrestor but there wasn't one. I assume there wasn't there in the first place as never had it off before

That is somewhat surprising but if you haven’t removed it yet and it was new to you, it must not have. Is there a chance it is internal on your saw? Does your muffler come apart?

@@JaredsShop You could also add in your videos, that it is actually better to avoid .325 chains altogether. And actually use picco super 3 full chiesel 3/8 1.3 chain on all saws up to 3kw/4hp. And to use standard 3/8 chain on all saws with more than 3kw/4hp. Both of them are faster and better than .325, thats reality. I cant believe what am saying but i recently bought makita 36v 35cm cordless saw just as a toy, that completely changed my opinion on 3/8 picco. After that, i went crazy and bought sthil's super picco 3. Man, i was always mocking people that used it, but after 2 weeks of playing with that "toy", i am honestly speechless. Chains that are .325, are officially history for me. Im saying this, because correct chain will make big difference with power and cutting speed. Super picco 3 full chiesel, mark my words m8, and try it

I use to bust that one out alot until I was working on my KTM and found it it actually has muffler bearings listed as a part ! They are part of the power valve which changes the exhaust port height on the 2 strokes. So yeah, muffler bearing actually exisit.

I've muffler modded every one of my 15 stihl saws. Wouldn't run one without doing it. No spark arrestor either. I always break em in like 10 tanks before any mod tho.

Speaking of fire danger I lived in A Place Called Paradise California. 18000 structures 100% destroyed it's like 14600 something home 100% destroyed. 88 confirmed death 64 still missing. If the humidity is low it doesn't take much weed eater mowing chainsaws Just watch the humidity and the Wind under 30% is getting risky depending on how dry it has been used common sense always keep a couple 5 gallon buckets of water around they will save your ass stopping the grass will not put it out when the humidity is low This fire is somewhere between 9 and 15 billion dollars they call it the campfire not because it was started by a campfire because it started by Camp Creek Most of the damage was done in the first 12 hours of the fire 90000 acres in 12 hours Learning to keep your razor sharp at all times will make any saw cut better than a brand new chain. If you run your chain dull it will never cut right again no matter how you sharpen it it where's the tooth on the bar side. Slow your chain speed down two bumps on branches and when you're cutting bark bark has all the dirt in it never cut bark or suck it into your cut when your cutting. Put the saw on the log with the chain stopped then jog the chain stop go stop go then every cut will be debarked your chain will stay sharp 20 times longer. Never ever run a dry chain not even for one tiny cut sometimes you have to mix a little diesel in with your bar oil to break the glaze on the chain depending on what kind of wood you cutting. Sharpening your saw is an art but you can do it. Everybody look straight down top of the chain . Forget about that part look at the side of your chain that's important part turn this on the side if you have to look at it. I know most of you round file but you want to get it approximately 90 degrees all the way from the top to the bottom of the edge that sticks out. Remember if you run a dull chain even for one cut the chain will never ever cut right no matter how you sharpen it. If you don't mess up your chain you won't ever have to do your rakers. Now that you got a little concept you will be able to use your own skills make that sell work much better and easier for you. Remember slow your chain speed down when you get anything that possibly can dull it. Like cutting through a lot and hitting the dirt it's not hitting the dirt that dulls it it's your chain speed if you only move your chain 6 inch at a time and hit the ground what does it do nothing. Be safe and think of other safety to enjoy the woods it's nothing like it

Pat Denney So sorry to hear that! You are correct, there’s nothing like being in the woods. I LOVE my Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener. It makes sharpening very easy and accurate. Pferd also makes them. I disagree with not having to do rakers. The teeth are angled a bit and as they get sharpened the get shorter. You have to do the rakers so you get the same depth of cut.

I'm all about a Mac and sthill saws are over priced and over rated. My personal opinion, and we all know what that's worth. But when it comes to sharpening I've come across some gnarly abused chains. And if there's any tooth left they can cut like new again. When filing get the gullet and always file the rakers!!!! I'm sorry and I feel for you poor folks. Especially when I know wildfires were all intentionally started from satellites and microwave/laser technology from above. I pray that these evil maggots finally get what's coming to them. what does that fire have to do with modifying a chainsaw to get the max out of an investment I have logged and harvested trees and have my own tree triming and removal company in missouri for 12 years and have also raced 4 wheelers in hairscrambles since I was a child and always have removed what they call a spark resistor or whatever its a stupid design from stupid laws from stupud people who want to blame everything on anything they can and all it does is jack prices up and make things lifetime decrease. all those things do is clog your exhaust which brings the performance down. now I feel for the families who lost someone cause they can never be brought back, but everything else can be replaced thats why there is insurance that a smart person would keep on any investment of there's. there is a million ways the fires could of started from a group of hippies camping getting to stoned and forgetting to put there camp fire out to the most common and natural way a lightning strike its natures way of cleaning itself of the garbage and making room for new life! so instead of going into a big pour me finger pointing rant and making a comment on something that has nothing to do with or that you could never prove that it's ever even caused anything like that maybe you all should move to a better place because I hate to break the news to you nature has its way of doing things and won't stop because we want it to, your state makes all these stupid fucking laws and you guys still have fires every year droughts every year deaths and destruction every year and none of it is because we modify our chainsaws! 1970 olds442 It certainly doesn’t double but I did not an improvement. I timed about a 20% improvement in speed of cuts. 20% on a higher HP saw will definitely be more than 20% on a smaller saw but it still helped a lot. I have no idea how much HP I gained but was using that as an example.

Here's another easy mod for some crazy fast cutting . Increase the size of your driver sprocket , the closer you get to the diameter of the end of your bar the faster the chain will run ! Word to the wise ALWAYS use a tach when tuning your saw and a little extra mix oil might just save a piston ! Get yourself a BUG-A-SALT for those pesky flies , it's a pump action gun that shoots salt and pretty effectively but be sure to wear safety glasses !

hey you If I had a 193 I’d do the same thing to it. It would need it even more because it is less hp than my 211. I didn’t say I wanted a lighter saw. I said I wanted more power out of the saw I had. Replacing it with a larger saw is not an answer, which was my point. I already have a larger saw so that point is negated. The point is there’s no reason not to do this mod. If you’re worried about a spark arrester then you can add one to your holes or vents. I’m not, so I haven’t, and I’m not putting anyone at risk. If you don’t think the mod is worth it then don’t do it. I happen to think it is. I don’t care if people do the mod but if they’re looking for a way to do it, here’s how I did mine. If I was alone in thinking it was worth it there wouldn’t be so many professionals doing it to every saw they own. Having done it to mine, I will definitely do it to any saw I buy.

If you think many of us are located in forests...you would be horribly mistaken. Tree lines...fence rows...cutting many times in a couple feet of snow. Coming back after bucking in the spring to pick up our logs to bring em home. A mod like this is simply increasing your exhaust pipe so your intake air has better flow much like your wood stove does when lighting a fire. If you wanted, you could put a manual limiter much like your wood stove to vary your exhaust for efficiency, but in colder climates, this is a pretty smart mod. Also, no one is saying you can’t add a screen too. Two self starting screws and a bit of old screen would do. When you see a video, one shouldn’t see it as the end all be all. I think of it like a great idea and ponder additional tweaks and then add in comments to enrich everyone’s experience.

This still keeps enough back pressure for it to run properly yet opens it up so it runs better. It isn’t choked down like it is out of the factory. You have to be careful with running too little fuel because you can overheat it.

Stanley Bashline Even though I know I’m burning more because I had to open the carb a little bit, I can’t notice a change. It runs so much stronger and cuts better that I think I’m using the same or less fuel for the same amount of work. For example, if a cut took 20 seconds before but now I can do it in 16 seconds, I think I’m actually using less. My cuts are 20% faster but I’m definitely not using 20% more fuel.

You still need some back pressure and this helps prevent it from being too loud. Also, with no muffler, the engine can suck cold air back in which is bad for thermal cycling. This still allows it to cool normally.

It was a super super hard log. Sharp chain and even the big saw slowly chewed through it. I’ll probably do another video showing the saw is performing great. Unfortunately I won’t be able to a comparison on a different log since the mod is complete but it does run very well.

While larger engines can see benefits from exhaust tuning (dirt bikes and such) smaller engines can greatly benefit from just a little bit of increased flow and proper air/fuel adjustments.

I won’t be starting any forest fires and I already own a bigger saw. I did the mod on it too. I didn’t mod this to make it act like a bigger saw. I modded it to make it run better. I love the size and weight of this saw. It doesn’t matter how big the saw is I’d still mod it. People even mod the ms880. They usually do more than just a muffler mod too. The saws are choked down from the factory and this mod helps a ton.
