I agree on the consistency being the main thing holding writers back. I remember dozens of popular webtoons non originals being randomly abandoned by the author(no update, no saying that the project was being dropped) and these people had millions of views and a constant readers. I know shit happens and it could be out of their control but really shows how numbers aren't everything.

Webtoons, just like Webnovel (web novels app) are IP farms. the fact that they demand the rights to your work is disgusting.
@inspired.author
@inspired.author Ай бұрын
I think my perspective is that if an investor gives you money to make something - then they’ll get a piece of that project. If you want to keep all rights, then you’ll have to fund it yourself. There’s ways to fund projects yourself and go to original. And not take any of WT’s money. The moment you take someone else’s money - is the moment your rights are likely going to be jeopardized or shared. This goes for any publisher or distributor in the industry.
@inspired.author

It also is the same if you raise money for a company, an investor gets a part of your company. So that’s usually just how raising investment goes.

As a former webnovel author and a webtoon canvas creator this one of the dumbest takes I have ever seen like you are earning money from creating the project "exclusively" (that's what original means) for this platform yet you want to take your rights have published it elsewhere? and do whatever you want with it? They are paying you for literally staying on their platform and not going anywhere if you can find non exclusive contract go for it but saying exclusive contract is forcing you not leave the platform is idiotic that's literally the point of being an original creator of a platform. How are they supposed to make money if you are going to take the story and sell it for less on another platform? You are just scamming them you take their money and sell it somewhere else? Wtf kinda logic is that?

Creators have to realize they don’t need the suits to succeed. The suits need the creators to succeed. Would you rather be like Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) and keep control of your IP, and legacy, or be like Akira Toriyama and give over your project to a big publisher? Toriyama did make a lot of money over his career generally speaking, but when you see how many billions DB is worth, the fact that the man who created the thing was worth only tens of millions is quite laughable. Hopefully they don’t milk DB bone dry now that he has passed. Sometimes quality control of your work and legacy is worth more than monetary gain. Each creator has to determine their path. Calvin and Hobbes, for example, is fondly remembered pretty universally. Watterson kept control of his title. DB is remembered fondly for nostalgia but has mixed opinions overall. I think a big part of that was due to the suits trying to cash in on the IP with all the transformations for merch. I can’t say that for certain, but usually when something goes commercial it goes bad fairly quickly. However, as not to be pessimistic, I think a creator COULD find success if they are comfortable giving up their IP. However, I’m still for creator ownership. Give the platform the right to publish as long as you’re there, but if the creator walks then the IP walks. 💪😤

@@RodneyKing-kz3ym I am not against creators keep their rights to the ip, what I am talking about is if your publisher asks for the ip rights to keep it exclusively on their platform, it's making them the villian that's wrong. exclusivity means being in one place. They give you a contract which says they will have partial control to make sure you won't distribute this story to the competition, when you sign it you knowingly and willing make sure the story stays in this one place. The op is making it seem like a platform wanting your exclusivity for their platform to succeed is somehow bad, that he should get the rights so he can fuck over the platform if he wants to and get money that comes with the contract. If you want to keep total rights you can easily publish on royalroad (novels) and webtoon canvas (webtoon), the way op saying makes it look like all the authors and artist that work with these companies are stupid or in need of help, nope they know what they did and are earning money.

Just wanted to say that you’re such an inspiration to writers everywhere! I really want to be able to create manga/webtoons at some point but I’m not really able to draw. Most manga-making channels tend to focus on the artist’s perspective, so being able to see and understand how to approach everything from a writer’s perspective is super helpful in figuring out a path forward. Thank you so much and keep up the amazing work!

Getting a Webtoon Original deal sounds like a full-time job. I will go for the Webtoon Canvas route, and I will use the platform to upload my comics as an author-illustrator. I like the idea of posting regularly, though. But posting once a week is insane. I want to pursue a career as a schoolteacher, paying a regular salary, while doing comics on the side.

In my opinion doing canvas isnt enough. Like dont get me wrong, i really enjoy working on my canvas project, Radka (lol if you maybe want to check it out) and consistency is key, but you need some luck as well. Like yes, the first step is having proof of you being able to do it, but you need some luck for the right eyeballs to fall on your project.

Great video as always, im a bit curious now on the finances side of these webcomic original projects like whats the budget range webtoon or tapas usually give, how do you go about putting in a team, how much do you usually pay the main artists, colorists.. etc, would really be "educational" haha but anyways really good content as always!

Your videos are always helpful and good to watch. Thanks for making them. I do think there is a lot of controversy with WEBTOON and creators but I still think it’s a good platform for exposure. Also just as you said, testing the process of putting out a product on a weekly basis is important.

So how did you move from writing books to writing manga and webtoons? Where would you suggest aspiring writers like you to start at trying to work up their portfolio? Where would you suggest posting stuff for purely written work online? I know the questions are a bit niche, but thank you for reading. Keep up being an inspiration!

Having this video up STILL to this day is worrisome. You shouldn't be promoting a caging experience to nobody. Never use Webtoon to promote your comics or mangas or whatever. Never. Webtoon taking control of your IP is never okay. Not in any universe ever.
@inspired.author

Look, I understand every creator's deal is different - but Webtoon partners with me on projects. They don't take my IP - they give me the money to make my projects happen. I can't speak on much else, but without Webtoon - there is NO world where I am able to get this capital or money to fund these productions. You can think of webtoon as an investor, because that's what they are. They invest in your IP and hope it'll go big, so they can also reap the benefits. It is the same for any other investor and most publishers.
@cozyintherain
@cozyintherain Ай бұрын
@@inspired.author Fundamentally I disagree. Just because Webtoon is widely known does not mean there is nowhere else to post your webcomics and such. There are webcomics that have their own websites and social media is a fantastic way to advertise it. You do not need a company to push out your work for you. Webtoon will not control your IP while it is on their website. Uploading your comics TO their website automatically means you agree to their Terms of Service, which states in some fashion that they own the rights to your comics. It is WHEN you take your hit comics beyond Webtoon's website that hinders comic makers because now they do not own their own property. Webtoon has the final say in how they present your printed works and where you can upload your comics.
