Hello from Japan! I know a lot about the Japanese manga industry, so I will explain how Japanese manga artists are paid. There are three main ways to earn money as a manga artist in Japan. ①Manuscript fees when published in magazines. Japanese manga artists basically publish their works regularly in magazines and manga apps. Weekly magazines publish their works once a week, and monthly magazines publish their works once a month. The manuscript fee when the work is published is the first source of income. You will receive a fee for the number of pages published. Currently, the manuscript fee for Weekly Jump (a weekly manga magazine for boys), the manga magazine with the highest circulation in Japan, is ¥20,900 per black and white page and ¥30,350 per color page. (On November 20, 2024, Shonen Jump's official X announced that it had raised the price of manuscript fees.) The number of pages published every week in Weekly Jump is basically 19 pages. 20,900 x 19 pages = 397,100 yen 397,100 x 4 weeks = 1,588,400 yen You can earn ¥1,588,400 a month just from magazine publication. (Price for new writers. The price increases with each year of publication) (Prices vary depending on the magazine and publisher) ② Royalty income When a manga work is published as a book or published on a web app, 8-12% of the book's list price is paid to the author. If the contract states that 10,000 copies will be printed with a 10% royalty, a recent Japanese manga volume costs about 700 yen per volume, so let's do the math. If 10,000 copies are printed with a royalty of 700 yen per volume, it will be about ¥700,000. There aren't many writers whose works are only printed in 10,000 copies in Japan alone. 10,000 readers is not a big number in Japan. Even for authors who don't sell at all, the going rate is over 30,000 copies, and popular works are those that sell over 100,000 or 1 million copies, and are likely to be made into anime. There are tons of works that sell over 100,000 or 1 million copies in Japan alone. If the work is translated into other countries, you will receive additional royalties from each country. ③ Copyright royalty income Popular works are made into merchandise, anime, movies, stage plays, CDs, and a wide range of other products. You can receive copyright royalties for each of these. The amount of the contract is not made public, so this is just a guess. I think that if you have made this much, you are a successful manga artist. Many Japanese readers believe that as long as the work is interesting, the story, art style, and nationality don't matter. Japanese people read works of many different genres. They are really hungry for good works. Give it a try. The Japanese manga industry is open to authors living overseas. Many manga contests are held regularly for overseas artists. You will need to write the lines in Japanese, but please give it a try using a translation machine or a translator.
