And there is societal pressure normalizing "eating a meal" "preparing a meal" .. This is far healthier and more economical than fast food!!

@@cospaws8810 you put it into words so well. especially with food and eating, with all the culture around it, it’s easy to forget that at the end of the day it’s just food and very little about making food is actually a “wrong” way to prepare it (only wrong thing i can think of right now is completely burning something to a crisp lmao). cause again… it’s just food!! who cares if i’m not eating a fully prepared meal???

For anyone who struggles to get things done, it helps to remember that doing things the "right" way isn't the only way. Eat all the sandwich pieces separately. Clean up half or a third or a quarter of the mess instead of all of it if you have to. Set alarms for basic tasks. Do whatever you need to keep yourself on track and never get caught up in how things "should" be.

so agree with this. especially with the example of setting an alarm for basic tasks. On the one hand, yeah, we could just try remember that one more thing we have to do (and i.e., yk, at/within a certain time) but imo, if you feel the need to set a reminder/alarm...and you might end up with half a dozen reminders on some days - even if it is for simple, small chores - hey rather you're able to get them done than forget or miss it right? as long as our methods for things aren't causing us or anyone else any trouble, why not our way. there isn't always just right or wrong, there's an in between - "just different" :)

a great example of how to remove barriers to entry! if there are too many steps, get rid of as many as you can. rethink your assumptions about what something is “supposed” to look like, and focus on the goal of your activity instead. then find the easiest way to achieve that goal rather than trying to make yourself do it the “proper” way. better done than perfect!

I am 70 & struggling now to eat meals. Always loved to cook for my family & cooked what I loved, my traditional Louisiana food; making most everything from scratch. Now living alone, not in Louisiana anymore, I can’t easily get what was abundant in my New Orleans home & I don’t feel like cooking & eating. I’ve done what you suggest once or twice & it’s helpful. Was never much a sandwich person to start. To hear you share your struggles has hit home. Finally made a pot of bean soup last night as I try to find my footing & get back on track with joy in cooking & eating🙏😊

Sorry to hear it's a struggle. What a smart idea, making bean soup. I love having a big batch of something, such as ham and split pea soup, or beef stew with veggies, or a casserole to scoop up and eat during the week. I hope that bean soup does the trick!

❤🎉 what a beautiful grandma you are. My own mom does not supoort me in my lacking energy for executive tasks (I’ve got an ADHDbrain.) And my son often does not eat the best assembled pretty foods but he is healthy! And I still breastfeed: which is an enormous sacrifice of time and energy after 2 years of his birth. You are a wonderful mom and grandmom. And sure your kids are not damaged because of not having assembled pretty food on the table. I had a lot of prettily assembled food but then : no quality times with my parents; received no attention for my inner beings: the things I liked, the books I wrote; no expressed love from my parents for what I really was. And now, my mom focuses on what I cannot do (executive function tasks) instead of celebrating what I can do what is exceptional: my job, my career interests; my love for music; my voice; my subjects of research; my deep feelings etc.

When my kids were little I’d often take a capsicum (bell pepper) a carrot, a cucumber and an apple and just chop them off pieces. They were just as happy with a big chunk of bell pepper, a whole carrot, a massive chunk of cucumber and the cheek off an apple as they were with a carefully chopped salad (and don’t even get me started on those cutesy ones influencers make where they chop the vegetables to look like animals). In fact I think my kids preferred it. Some nights that was paired with some roast chicken or fried eggs and a slice of bread or two. They were getting vegetables, fibre, protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Most of the time they are very well so I didn’t allow myself to be critical of my survival days because a baby hadn’t slept or grocery shopping made me tired or if I was feeling low. They’re older now and can even cook themselves. They all eat really well - there’s very few veggies they don’t like. They’d probably still be totally ok with a massive chunk of cucumber, capsicum and a whole carrot.

Sometimes I even throw a bunch of things in my lunch bag for work, intending to make a salad or sandwich at lunch at work. Instead I run out of time so I just eat the components. In my mind I call it a deconstructed sandwich/salad. Makes it seem more legitimate. I also tend to feel guilty for snacking while cooking for my kids and us. But I often eat healthy stuff. Such as broccoli and carrots. As long as I adjust my portion size at the end maybe it’s not so bad. It just means I’m hungry.

I love this. As a child I always used to dissect my meals and eat them in parts. That's how I liked it and it drove my brother crazy, so that was a bonus.😂

My son is in the process of being tested for ADHD. It will help explain why this brilliant boy has trouble focusing and finishing tasks. I want to prepare him for eventual college life. I think he’ll struggle and I don’t want that struggle to lead him to existing on takeout and poor eating. Nor do I want him to be helpless in any way. I want him to live well on his terms and am sure if he learns the tips that Kylie shares on her channel, he’ll do just fine in the nutrition area of his life. God willing. Thank you Kylie.

It sounds like he has a good support network :) I'm a university student with ADHD and I'd say the biggest factor in me learning to deal with it and thrive is having my family's support (especially whilst I was getting diagnosed - why does having ADHD involve so much paperwork?? That's not fair!) Some things that have helped me on days where I couldn't find the energy to make a proper meal were shelf stable snacks (peanut butter & bread is a fave), prepackaged individual portions like yogurt cups, salami sticks and cheese sticks, pre-cut carrot sticks, frozen peas etc. When I cook I like to double the recipe so I have dinner for the next day sorted too. And also having a huge water bottle in my room because refilling it once every few days is easier than refilling it multiple times per day haha

@@Moocow2003 Thank you so much for your kind words and helpful tips. I appreciate it. The paperwork is inexplicable at times. As is waiting for assessments and diagnosis and therapy dates, all of which you are more than familiar with, I am sure! We are just at the beginning and I pray he gets the help he needs. Wishing you success and well-being :-)

This made me cry. I’ve struggled for years with prioritizing eating and taking care of some of my basic needs as someone with depression and anxiety. Thank you for normalizing this. I always feel so lazy for not being able to do things that many deem easy

Wow. This for some reason really really hit home. It's strange when something suddenly makes sense. Hearing someone (who I admire) talk about their experience casually and acceptingly really helps.

This is so important. There's so much shame in being unable to even assemble a sandwich on the hard days. It's beyond important to remove that barrier and shame and stigma. My favorite is rolling up the cheese in the meat, it still feels like a sandwich to my brain and tastes great plus it's fun and spirally. The cuteness of it makes me feel less depressed on the tougher days

Thank you for normalising 'picky' meals. Ultimately it all gets churned up in your stomach anyway. Your stomach doesn't 'think' that 'this hasn't been presented to me as a proper sandwich, therefore I hate it'. Even when I am functioning well, I love my balanced 'buffet' plates. I am in my healthy weight range and regular. Job done.

As a single woman who lives alone I’ve fully embraced having one to two meals a day be very simple things like this. I go through times when I can prep food to eat throughout the week but having my staple balanced “snack” meals is a game changer.

Fr. Needing to eat and not having the spoons to make something sucks, and I really adore her reframing of things. "Fuck it, I'll have a slice of bread" is sometimes what we can do, and that bit of energy is better than circling in executive dysfunction for hours. 💛 (And can sometimes give the boost to make something more substantial later 😂)

As someone who can relate due to depression and anxiety that causes me to not feel hungry or thirsty…..this is something I learned to do after getting pregnant and having no other option, but to find ways to make eating simple, healthy, and with little to no prep and clean up. It brought tears to my eyes to see someone sharing this information and knowing it will be seen by others who have the same struggles. Thank you

This is very true. I will now try to see it like this. I too struggle with this issue of thinking it has to made to look what it is, when really, it’s okay just eating the parts. I end up wasting so much food and letting it spoil when I don’t have energy to assemble it all. I hope with this new mindset it will make buying food and making it easier on me.

This is such a valuable advice. I'm struggling with depression, and I have periods of time when my room becomes so messy it makes me even sadder, but I don't have energy to clean it. And the best advice I got from my counsellor was "maybe you shouldn't try to clean all at once, but instead only do as much or little as you can an the moment. Maybe today you can collect the garbage, and a couple days after you have spare energy to wash the dishes or do the laundry". Since then my room looks so much better and I don't feel overwhelmed. When I think about this now it's so obvious, but before I was told this, doing anything but perfect was never an option😅
