hello my favorite people!! It has been too too long. I hope you enjoy today's video on my very non-linear path to starting comp/ML for chemistry ;)

Very nice path you had there! It's a mixture of opportunities and hard work, curiosity and determination. Keep it up!

thumbnail explains it all. I like chemistry, but don't understand it enough to apply it. With computational everything, I like that better, because it forces you to learn all the info for the purpose of teaching a computer to be able to control/manipulate what's learned to what works to be a tool to apply for an application. It also helps with verifying if the info's learned correctly too. It also prevents the need to remember concepts, as it's built into the computer code. So all that's left is a resource to use!

I love that u just describe your journey but there is still so much to learn from it cause it shows an example of how one can find their area of study accidentally or not. Usually youtubers list the kinds of things one should do to achieve a certain goal. But your video just flowed and was nice to listen to. Ur the best!

tysm for ur comment and watching! yes sometimes the path is not linear and I hope it helps to share the road rather than just the destination

I always wanted to make a digital chemistry lab where people can combine chemicals together virtually, so they don't have to in person and waste chemicals or risk their health (happened to me). One day I hope to make it (unless it already exists - in which point me to the location!).

Best way to prep for computational chemistry? Mathematics > chemistry. How much calculus vs discrete math/linear algebra? Fortran, c++, or python?

are there any resources you would suggest for getting started with computational chemistry and machine learning for specifically for polymer science. Do you know of any short courses online for this, or any textbooks? I am a PhD student in polymer science and am interested in learning how machine learning can be used in the design of functional therapeutic agents.

thank you for watching! for ML for chemistry, reading papers is a great place to start. for more hands on stuff, there's some cool stuff on kaggle. here's an example link: www.kaggle.com/vladislavkisin/tutorial-ml-in-chemistry-research-rdkit-mol2vec. they have cool competitions and datasets to play around with!

8:01 I'm the opposite - I want to explain something correctly - and I don't care who doesn't understand - I can always explain what I fathomed after, but I want it to be complicated with breadth to look back on and know what I said, as at least I'd understand and can use it and that's what matters to me. It's up to people to get smart enough to keep up with me, not the other way, as then people can go brain dead (my experience lol).
