How I got the Tears of the Kingdom WR without Amiibo

A lot of people really don't like amiibo usage in speedruns, but luckily there are routes that don't use amiibo and a filter on the leaderboard for easy access to no amiibo times. I enjoyed trying out the no amiibo route for TotK and this video goes over the new routing that has dropped any% times by so much in the last few months for both amiibo and no amiibo.

As long as amiibo and no amiibo separate filters, I think it should be just preference. Getting the fastest time or getting a top position without an amiibo is still as impressive as if you were to use one, as the skill it takes to perform the run is pretty much the exact same

Yeah, Amiibo/Nomiibo makes perfect sense for a category split. It's kinda like how many games have an "in-bounds" vs "out of bounds" category split (Portal comes to mind).

Why can't you scan the daruk amiibo for the topaz earlier on in the run, like on top of the first island to have earlier resets if rng fails? Not questioning, i just want to understand why :)

I do wonder why people stopped talking about the idea of playing the intro, then either loading a GSI file or using a mod to skip the cutscene. It didn't seem to have backlash, just never got traction

There was a clip found to skip all of Zelda’s dialogue before the cutscene saving around a minute
@iwersonsch5131
@iwersonsch5131 2 ай бұрын
@@EuropeanApple755 That timesave would be included, the idea discussed (and successfully coded) was the following: 1. Play the intro 2. When Zelda asks if you want to watch the 4 minute cutscene, select "not yet" 3. Pause the timer and load a GSI save file. 4. Add the length of the cutscene onto the time for the run

My problem with speedrunning on Botw and Totk was always the amibo, it just takes away the entertainment, patients, and just skill looking from the viewer and it just makes the player seem lazy in my opinion.

I'm gonna say something incredibly lukewarm: The use of amiibo constitutes using an external device to gain a gameplay advantage. In layman's terms, it is _cheating._
@cheesykatie
@cheesykatie 4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the mini-essay but... checking the definition, for it to be cheating it must be dishonest, inequitable, or against the rules. If the rules of the speedrun category (established by the community, not Nintendo) include the use of amiibo, then it's by the rules. If amiibo is available to everyone participating in that category (unless someone steals their amiibo mid-run then it is, or they're not participating in that category) and functions equally (my set of amiibo does what yours does), then it's equitable. If those using it report it honestly, then it's honest. To expand on the equitable logic a bit (it might sound silly at first), imagine saying that running on updated versions is inequitable because not everybody can afford internet access or wants to download updates. Or, say we had a DDR-pad category; not everyone can afford or even use one, but if we have a category specifically for it, and someone's running that category, the understanding is that they have the expected minimum gear. We don't call participants cheaters if some other people can't or won't participate because they don't have the gear. We have a separate category for people who can't or won't participate in the amiibo category, and it would only be cheating if someone used them in that other category. That said, if you were talking about casual play or speedrunning with your own restrictions... of course, you could personally consider it cheating to play with amiibo if you want to limit yourself to disk-only vanilla or something. But this isn't that :)
@miles11we
@miles11we 4 ай бұрын
If a speedrun requires the use of cheat engine as part of the rules, would you consider any valid participation cheating? Its dumb to pretend that cheating exists as some absolute honor code or something out of a 12 year olds musings on philosophy. Within rules? No cheat. Prohibited by rules? Cheating.
