Moonflowers are hard to find, so when you buy a packet you want to get as many to grow as possible. I can show you how!

this is a true moonflower, thank you...I see so many people online calling the jimson weed a moonflower...the flower is similar but its hallucinogenic....I wish we could educate the people so they will know...thank you for being correct. The moonflower is a vine and the jimson weed is a bush.

Moon flowers are beautiful, especially since they bloom and open up at night. Great vid!

Yes, I just loved them the first time I saw one and was excited that they wound encourage night time pollinators to my garden with their sweet scent.

I've read that moonflower are perennials in warm weather conditions. I was just given some seeds.

When do you place them in the soil? Would it be after they crack?
@trowelandtable19123 жыл бұрын
Yes, as soon as I see the seed has cracked I will place it in a little hollow and sprinkle a light covering of soil over it. Best of luck!

Will they grow in zone 8? We have clay soil. Are they considered as a perennial? If potted, should I bring them in doors when the weather becomes cold / Thank you. And love your channel.

They are a big vine.. I have a big planter next to my front deck.. I am in Ny so its only an annual for me but if you are down south they are perennials

@@rosedolch8637 Thank you.

I recently moved to 8b and unfortunately they did not come back. But they may be annuals in zone 8. You can protect them with extra mulch for the colder nights and then pull it away as soon as the weather warms again. Please let me know if they come back.

I did well with zone 7, in Carolina red clay. they didn’t come back but there were plenty of seed for next year

Also have you ever tried growing them indoors?
@trowelandtable1912Ай бұрын
I grew some indoors for about the first 8 weeks. They are toxic to indoor pets and do need a lot of sunshine. They grew pretty fast after the first 6 weeks or so. They need to be trellised or placed next to a fence so they can climb on a support and I did not want them taking over my kitchen.
@brittanylee85022 жыл бұрын
How long do you soak them?
@trowelandtable1912Ай бұрын
I have soaked them from 8-12 hours, it seems to depend on the air temperature too as to how quickly they soften. When I soak them I leave part of the seed above the water line.
@emmyvillanueva24423 жыл бұрын
Do you continue soaking them until they crack, or only for one night?
@vivendi03 жыл бұрын
only for one night

Very difficult to grow in Pacific Northwest. I’m wondering why…
@trowelandtable1912Ай бұрын
I have found that they like a lot of sunshine and do not like their “feet wet”. Perhaps try planting them in a raised spot , adding sand to the compost or add 1/3 sand to your potting mix to allow for the soil to dry out quicker with better drainage. They will need extra food, compost tea or manure topcoat if it rains a lot.

Are you keeping them in water the whole time till planted in dirt?
@trowelandtable19123 ай бұрын
I soak them for a few hours and then place in soil in a pot with good drainage and keep very lightly moistened. Make sure there is good airflow and sunlight. I plant them outdoors as soon as it is warm enough at night.
@wassaufkhalid85933 жыл бұрын
is moonflower and jimson weed the same?
@trowelandtable19122 жыл бұрын
Hi Wassauf, Thanks for getting in touch. Jimson Weed is Datura or the devil’s trumpet. It can be a an invasive weed in many parts of the world. It has more of a trumpet shaped flower.
@HeatherRose2023 Жыл бұрын
@@trowelandtable1912 This is new to me as I thought moonflower is datura. Seems there are two kinds of plants which are both called moonflower. Thank you for pointing me to the other one! From wikipedia… “Ipomoea alba, sometimes called the tropical white morning-glory or moonflower or moon vine, is a species of night-blooming morning glory, native to tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America, from Argentina to northern Mexico, Arizona, Florida and the West Indies.” “Datura is a genus of nine species of highly poisonous, vespertine-flowering plants belonging to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). They are commonly known as thornapples or jimsonweeds, but are also known as devil's trumpets (not to be confused with angel's trumpets, which are placed in the closely related genus Brugmansia). Other English common names include moonflower, devil's weed, and hell's bells.

You can use any old heating pad you might have. Take the cover off and set it under a tray you set the pots on. Not too hot!!!

A wonderful decision, it adds a level of dependability to seed growing that has made the early start so much easier and way more fun. My seeds thrive with the even and steady added heat.

@@trowelandtable1912 it was white! Lol I got 2 or 3 blooms before winter started. I tried half a water gallon to limit the roots and start blooms. It did but I only got 2 or 3. Flower didn't have a scent though. I probably prefer blue morning glory instead
