How I Install A Prehung Interior Door (Part 2)

Continued-- Next, I center the hinge side of the jamb with the wall, and I nail it at the top shims.
I use the level to make sure the jamb is plumb before I nail off the other two shim locations.
If it’s leaning in or out it will cause the door to open or shut on its own.
Now I turn to the latch side- I align the jamb with the wall and nail the top off.
Then standing inside the room I open and shut the door to make sure it’s landing evenly on the door stop.
As I work my way down, adding shims and nailing, I also check the reveal on the front to make sure it consistent.
At this point I start adding shims wherever they are needed, including the top- checking the reveal as I go.
These holes get filled with putty when the door is painted.
Now the door shuts with an even reveal on all three sides.
I replace one screw in each hinge with a longer 2 1/2” screw- this secures the door to the framing and ensure it won’t move.
Finally- I used my multi-tool to cut off all the shims.

Here is some pro tips from a finish carpenter, maybe it’s helpful? Once the door is hung and in place remove middle hinge leaf jam side and behind the leaf put in a 3” good screw like a GRK. That way if painters come behind you & remove the door it’s not a problem of your jam flexing/ moving from hanging / rehanging a door causing hinge sag. You can do the top also if you’re hanging a new door in an old jam and it’s solid core. On pre hungs I use a system called ez hang its fast , simple and never had a call back ! In fact I have come back and removed the old wall where the ez hangs were & still perfect After several yrs of a Setting of lots of use ! Use a 15ga ! Not a 16 ga to set jams they were made exactly for that in trim carpentry 🔨 because the are way more beefier and thus increasing sheer strength/ sags ! Do not shim behind your hinge ! Rookie move! Those cedar or composite shims will move and crack behind a hinge ! 3/6” above and below if needed 6” down from top & 8”/12” above bottom of door if shimming ! If you do doors buy a door stud ! Or hv a door hang like the one Gary Katz uses ( see his videos). Hope this helps boys & girls !

Try installing a long screw behind the hinge. Counter sunk of course. That way when the door is removed for painting it will not affect the door frame when put back together and you won’t have to worry if the put the long screw back. 👍

@hausplans yeah. I like the doors in my house to be shut, so when we replaced them all I tilted some of them ever so slightly so they would swing most of the way shut. Same with a sliding door I have covering the laundry room. It self closes slowly.

We nail the shims plumb to the frame (hinge side). Than place the door and nail that side off. Than shim as you need to on the other side. 2” 1/2 - 3” 16 gauge nails and no screws

Only two things I would add to this is one check the floor for level and two never nail through your shams nail blow your shams this allows you to do fine-tuning later

That’s a good way to do that. Sort of that’s the way my boss does it and makes me do it. I prefer installing the door so that a two year old cannot knock it down.

Looks good. Experience tells me that shimming the top may cause problems if there is settling. I always checked for twist in the jambs. Doors were sometimes warped. I wish the multitool had been around when I was trimming.

First thing you have to do is check the level of the floor in case you have to cut one jamb leg so the header is level.

I’ve seen guys do that, basically you’re making your own split jamb door to install. I personally don’t care for doing it that way, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Its whatever you’re comfortable with that works👍

After you get a little more experience you will discover a way to get rid of all those unsightly pecker shots and stragicaly place countersunk screws neat the centerline of the door and use hinges to hide long screws that also hold door to the jam. Not a fan of pecker holes 😡😡

Just a suggestion But don’t just put a longer screw in place of the shorter one. What I do is remove all the hing screw on the jamb side one hinge at a time and put a longer one underneath the hinge. This way when the painter takes the hinges off to paint, it will not adjust the door

What’s happens if reveal is off on either side of door but it’s plumb level square? I’m gonna set my 3 doors this Monday and wondering. My first doors. Is that just not possible or have you seen this happen? I’m hoping I can set the three doors fairly quickly

For the last 52 years. If the pre hung door did not come with casing on one side, then we install casing first on one side then hang the door nailing the casing first. Then shims then the other side casing. We have never used a level. Only because the ceiling might not be level or the adjacent wall the door hits up against. Same out come with way less work.

I go all 3 screws at each hinge, couple extra minutes but well worth it as it prevents future maintenance at the hinges. Those pre hung frames rent the best material so the longer screws is an added step worth the time.

A real carpenter will hang any door in any way needed. These pre hung doors are for building sites full of odd jobbers . Didn’t you see how far away the final shot was, it was so that you didn’t see the massive gaps around the door and how uneven they are

Nails are never good for door jambs everytime the door slams the nails loosen over time and depending on the client you will get a call back to correct or never get a call back ever for any business.

What are your thoughts on putting the longer 2 1/2 inch screw that secures the door to the framing behind the hinge plate, so if any future changes to the door, hinges, etc. are required, there is no need to remove the longer screw?

That’s a good idea especially if a painter or someone is going to be removing the hinge. There’s always a chance they won’t get it back the way you had it.

Man pop the pin and do all that it’s 3 hinge pins 99% of the time and if it’s 4 we’ll then hello that a s big door and if it’s not hollow that’s a heavy door …..his way he left out the part of a shim under door on outside corner cause it’s just gonna fight you the whole time…and if it’s a exterior outswing with security hinges then you have no choice door on jam and shim down low for balance

I try to hide the nails or screws where they can't be seen when the door is closed and right beside the closing strip so they are hardly noticed when the door is open. Putting 1000 nails everywhere is quite unecessary and unsightly.

Never shim and nail the head. Headers always sag over time. It is not needed.

Just nail the casing on the hinge side level it and make sure the reveal is the same nail it to the wall and shim the other side at the hinge shim to make reveal right on nob side case the other side and put long screw in each hinge after the fact so much faster probably put up three to your one
