I applied for the Germany internship in my 3rd year and did the internship in the summers after 3rd year. I actually applied to PhD programs after I graduated, while working a corporate job, so there was a 1 year gap between my graduation and the start of my PhD program

Hi! you can definitely look for research internships in your third year. In my case, I had done a project in my second year which I believe helped build my profile. That being said, you can always look for research internships abroad or in India even if you don't have prior experience. There are a few research programs in IITs as well which you can apply to. For e.g. SURGE is the research program of IIT Kanpur through which I did a project after my second year. But a lot of students apply to this program in their third year and successfully complete their projects. You can even email Profs in India asking if they'd be willing to take you for a project, which I think is a good way to get some experience.

Yep I had accommodation and a stipend too. Expenses were managed with the stipend
