You get what you focus on .or Energy goes where attention flows.

Steve Jobs said “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully”. Thank you for reminding this.

@@TheBillaro I know what you mean-sounds familiar. I was just thinking about the concept of focus again yesterday and how tiny that 100% attention window really is. There’s literally only one thing we can do really well in life; everything else is a distraction. It really makes you think about where to put all that time and energy.

Discipline creates a confort zone. In that confort zone, we often fall into a routine that gives a false sense of accomplishment. This is why I never plan things in advance. Instead, I follow a list of priorities. Metaphorically, my days are spent in an emergency room where I’m always ready to give up what I’m presently doing to do something more urgent. In chaos, you have no choice, but to focus. In chaos, each day becomes unique and you feel alive all the time. Long term goals may seem attractive, but nobody lives in the future, only in the present.

That sounds really original. I have never heard of anything like this before. Do you have a youtube channel?

I see the value in the approach of focusing on the present and staying adaptable, especially in dynamic environments where priorities can shift quickly. The metaphor of living life like an emergency room is powerful-it emphasizes the need to focus and make quick decisions in the moment. However, I also believe there’s a balance to be struck. Discipline doesn’t necessarily trap you in a comfort zone; instead, it can provide a strong foundation that allows for adaptability when chaos arises. Long-term goals aren’t just about the future-they guide present actions and help ensure you’re moving in a meaningful direction. In my experience, combining disciplined habits with flexibility creates the best of both worlds: the ability to stay present and focused while still building toward something greater. It’s not chaos versus planning; it’s about harmonizing the two

@ I agree. There’s a balance to be struck. Real success is often accidental. People who get it usually didn’t expect it and almost never can handle it. On the other hand, ambitious people rarely reach their goals. Why? Maybe because life likes to surprise us…

A very interesting presentation. In a way, one might argue that focus itself is a kind of discipline (just not what most people think of as discipline)--e.g. the discipline to say "no by default," the discipline to simplify, etc. In that sense, focus would be THE foundational discipline, without which other types of discipline are far less effective (or in some cases even ineffective). That of course is all just a question of semantics though, and your points are well made and well taken.
@erkkasuvanto10 күн бұрын
thank you. I have found that it's hard for us people to stay disciplined without the right tools. Willpower to stay fit, eat right or 'say no' is often not enough. We need tools to lean back on so that those daily choices become consistent and effective.
@erkkasuvanto10 күн бұрын
To continue on this, I'm personally a good example of a person who has been disciplined but not focused. Was able to do many things simultaneously (committed to taking action and never giving up) but not getting enough done because I wasn't focused. I did too many things at the same time. In other words, I did not have focus.

Focus Before Is Too Late
@newdawnrising81103 күн бұрын
Anyone can schedule time to focus but how to actually make oneself do it is different. How do you make yourself focus? Can you describe the effort?
@erkkasuvanto3 күн бұрын
To me it starts with understanding the following: If I want to be good at anything, I need to put all my time and effort into it. In order to do that, I need time. Time gives me clarity which again gives me focus. The magnitude of work it takes to get really good anything was the turning point for me. I literally need to remind myself eery day not to do everything. Say no to little things that allow me to focus on my current business

I have same 3 priorities.. good dad, fitness and business. So I am to focus on business and be a shitty father and lose fitness/strength/health??? wtf By the way I got good at golf in a couple of years working on it part time but consistently. I was able to break par on 18 holes but that’s relative because I’ll never need as good as a pga pro and I don’t need to be. Same applies to business… I don’t need a $100mil business I would be happy making $200k ARR or even 1/3 that
@erkkasuvanto13 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I think there’s a difference in what people aim to achieve. Fitness can be a hobby you do 2-3 times a week, or you can train like a pro athlete. The same goes for business-it depends on your goals. My point is that, based on my experience, it’s impossible to be the best possible version of yourself in all three areas at the same time. Sounds like you have found a good balance.
