Just a few months ago, I had no idea what coding even was. All I knew was that it had something to do with typing complicated stuff on a computer. I got the idea of learning how to code after I graduated with an Economics Degree from a university in London. Economics is a highly valued degree, most people who do it in top universities like mine become investment bankers and stuff like that. I did an internship at a big bank too, but I hated it. So I started looking into what career path could give me a lot of money, and also a great work-life balance. So I discovered, software engineering.
I learned that to become a software engineer, all you really need is to know how to code. So I typed on Google, how to learn to code, and I ended up starting with Python for Everybody and the Odin Project, these are both free resources, the former introduced me to one of the most popular programming languages of today, Python, and the latter familiarized me with the basics of Web Development using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
At this point my goal was just to get a vague sense of the vast world of programming, to start understanding what was out there, how the different pieces like front-end and backend development fit together and what they mean at a high level. Going through the Odin Project I got a basic sense for many interesting topics such as how the internet works and what it actually means to open a web page on your browser.
I will also tell you how I got my first job in tech as a Software Engineer..

To all the comments who say “Ur not a Software Engineer if you don’t have a degree”: The exact job title that my company gave me is “Software Engineer. Therefore I am a software engineer. If you have a problem with that, you can tell that to my company, not me. In the UK/US “Software Engineer” is just a job title that is 100% the SAME THING as a “Software developer” etc. In some countries the word “engineer” is reserved for people with degrees, but NOT in UK/US, where companies (Google etc) call self-taught people engineers too. There is absolutely no ‘special’ meaning with the word here the way (many) companies actually use it. (There were enough comments about this so I had to address it)

"Engineer" term is an old idea that comes from medieval Latin word "ingeniator" which means "one who creates or uses an engine" which at a time was real magic, so this term has to do with classic fields like mechanical engineering, nowadays we entered in third millennium! Another amazing video ❤ I did struggle for 1 year with complex tutorials and couldn`t learn anything. I was so frustrated. What was game changing for me was learning through good Books! First I learned the basics with Javascript in Less than 50 Pages and then I improved with Head First Javascript Programming. Literally every other concept became much easier to understand after learning Javascript.

Great video! I come from a similar self taught path. Programming isn't necessarily hard. It's actually quite easy once you get used to the problem solving paradigm. I think people have a tough time learning how to code because they spend too much time "studying" and not building things they want to build.

Awesome job! I had a similar experience- was in the middle of studying business/finance, did a 180, learned to code myself, and now work as a software developer. It's pretty crazy- I remember studying videos like these 2 years ago trying to decide if I could do it, so now it's weird to come back now as an actual software developer now with 1.5 years experience in the industry. Maybe she doesn't want to answer. But hopefully she's getting paid not too much to where she's pushed herself out of the market to have a happy life and not too little to not enjoy herself in life. You guys have to factor in her opportunities she gets for the hiring process of companies trying to meet the gender Q's. It doesn't really matter she makes much in anything because her money will always be her money while anybody she's with with end up having to break half or more off on her whichever way things end up. It's all of us guys that have to be worried about everything under the sun and stars to worry about and prepare for. Stay single and don't marry in a westernised world with nontraditional whamins. The most expensive invested you'll ever make in your lives as men that will cause the most destruction will most likely be in the women you bring into your lives. Take your redpills and protect yourselves! Nobody is going to save any of us and don't nobody really care and never will.

I started with free code camp ages ago but I've never give it much effort because of university, worry about the future, uncertainty about what I want from my life, doubts. I always feel like I'm wasting my time and I felt like a fraud for learning how to code when I should spend my time focusing on "more important things", the things which will grant me a "normal" job, the natural consequence of my degree. But your words were really inspirational and you pushed me to try, give it a shot, even if it means learning at night after a full day of study. I don't know what will happen of my life and I don't know if I will actually succeed in this path but you gave me a more solid reason to do it, because if you believed in yourself, you tried hard and you succeeded, why shouldn't I? Thank you for this, I’ve watched other videos on programming for beginners a couple of months ago but this is something different than people just saying learn how to code in python or a certain language or get a bachelors degree or bootcamp. And it’s really nice to watch from someone who did it all for free because there’s so many people trying to monetize off of you without truly trying to teach you what it can take to get a software type job. I've never watched any of your videos before, let alone known about your channel until this hit my recommendations, but listening to your story gives me so much hope for my own journey in progress. This video has given me hope to try to learn how to program again. I took a very difficult introductory course in uni on c++ with a professor that stared from 0 and went straight to 1000 and I was so lost that I absolutely hated programming and even questioned if I should change my career. No worries, I’d rather learn on my own and code at my own pace where I’m gaining value and being challenged correctly. Professors, classes from uni can definitely break you and ruin your enthusiasm you once had.

I took 3 months of programming in university and I learned very little of the programming language (I learned C). We were more focused on how to to use language to solve math problems. Now I am taking a java course privately and we have covered much more language in 3 months (but there is no or there is very little focus on problem solving). I am now studying html, CSS javascript as a part of that course, I also studied SQL for a month. The course lasts for 1 year but I am sceptical in general as to whether anyone would want to hire me. Sure, you can learn how to code for fun, for your own entartainment in a couple of months where you are able to build stuff but getting hired is another story. I stopped going to university after a couple of months for reasons unrelated to studying, the only reason why I am taking this java course right now is because I study from home. One of the reasons why this programming career is attractive to me is because I can probably work from home.

True, I hated programming I spent 3 years of Computer Science at Uni the pace is too fast, little value is provided by the varsity classes, terrible material delivery/teaching, a bunch of useless crap, currently studying data analytics on my own on udemy using python and investing since I am interested in investment banking and data science, I can tell you I absolutely enjoy working with data and programming. It is an interesting thing varsities make it more difficult and boring.

Regarding what you said about internships: Just BEING in a work environment and seeing what businesses are doing (*and developing good working relationships with those doing those things) is vital for learning and moving forward. It's hard to anticipate a skill or learn it without knowing how its used in real life but once you're working not only will you learn the tasks and skill associated with your own role but you'll learn other peoples roles too - who are often working in completely different departments and roles. This applies to any job/role/skill. I've worked for temp agencies - just to see whats out there - and its amazing just how much you're exposed to different industries, different skill sets, different roles you didn't know existed - plus the ability to build skill-sets in the context of your current role in order to practise and refine and then build a pathway to something better. Every temp gig i've been in has provided a TON of opportunity to work in that field with direct access to people in that company - where you would barely have to interview to get an opportunity. Just go to work, work hard, be friendly, be helpful, get to know everyone, learn extra skills on your time off and bring extra value to your employer. Is so much easier to do it WITHIN a company - when you're seeing people every day and they see how you work -

Looks like you're on a good path, congratulations! It's possible to get into software engineering on your own if you're already skilled at solving technical problems and if you put in the hard work. Most people can't and won't. Nonetheless, as you did, my recommendation is to get a job in the field as soon as it is possible. Practice makes perfect and nobody gets more practice than those who code for a living. Working on enterprise software provides for a richer learning experience than small side projects, which is all one can really do from home. My second recommendation is to get a senior engineer as a mentor for code review, discuss software architecture, best practices etc. I switched to software engineering 6 years ago after getting a PhD in Physics. I love it!

I am the same here brother. Just dropped out from uni, one year into my Computer Science degree. Personally I really hated uni because the degree is so expensive, covered with so much unnecessary fat, and the lecturers are incompetent at their job as a teacher. I am switching to self-learning online. I'm glad to see someone else who has had a positive experience with going down this path.

Was University too expensive? Or was Computer Science too hard for you so you quit because you figured it was easier to do than manning up to the situation and facing your problems... I'd bet it was the ladder. Anyways, I wish you luck. Google doesn't require a degree but they don't like to hire people who take the easy route either. Hence why people usually go for the CS degree.

@@dantheman4227 Uni was not ridiculously expensive but it was enough that I didn't want to get myself into debt at the beginning of my career (about 20k per year). I did not drop out because it was too difficult. My average grade was A and A+ for all comp sci subjects. I dropped out because I did not like the teaching style and did not want to fund the causes that the university was pursuing with my tuition money, among other reasons. Don't be so quick assume brother.

This is very inspiring, a month ago I started teaching myself python and I’ve built a few things.. currently learning about higher order functions, getters, setters, decorators.. and I’ve spent around 6 hours a day every single day. A lot of videos on KZbin show a negative view about getting a job in tech quickly, but I think if you’re determined and inspired enough you can do anything and I think you are proof of this. I'm a Management degree graduate, and I follow the same path as you by changing my career towards software engineering. This is a brilliant video! I studied PPE and got a really good degree this year but was in exactly the same position as you; the prospect of a supposedly glitzy finance career didn't interest me. I started MIT's 6.0001 and the problem sets are also kicking my proverbial ass but I am loving every minute. I'm starting a master's in public policy this year and would love to use my social science background to use my newfound programming knowledge to contribute to a policy issue with some quantitative analysis in my dissertation. First and foremost, congratulations, you worked extremely hard, came into this & set a series of goals & executed. You deserve to be where you are. However, I think it's becoming ever more common to see stories that are similar to your own, coming from a different background and switching into programming fields. And I just want to say I fully support that and think it's actually better to do it that way than to come from a cs degree. I'm pursuing a cs degree right now, and what I would give to go back & choose something else, more applied, to establish a purpose & reason to be doing the things that i'm doing...dude it's endless. But yeah, i think there is something more to coming from a different background & then going into cs-oriented type skill sets. And I think what it is, is that you see an aspect of the world. You see what that world has to offer, what concepts relate to that world, and then you go and get a tech-skill. There in lies, a possibility that now with this tech-skill, you could apply it to solve more problems in that world or go off into other worlds. And that idea, goes deeper. For example, I've tutored students in business programs that have to use python for some of their coursework. While my first instinct is to brief them on the fundamentals of python, many of them, want to skip over that & just immediately start solving problems. I've been familiar with it for about 5 years now and for a while I tried to convince them to reconsider, because I know that feeling, and I also know what it's like to be a complete beginner and get totally overwhelmed & burnt out by going too fast, I did that many times lol. But at the same time, lately, i've been letting it go & doing as they wish. Just focusing instead off of core python & instead it's libraries in data analysis like pandas. And i've been thoroughly surprised. For the most part, they seem to hang. They aren't concerned with the under the hood as much, as they are with getting shit done. And there's something to that mindset. When their goal does not lie in the language itself and what they can get the program to do, but rather in some other area, where writing the script is only a piece of the work, they come at problems like applied problem solvers. Rather than programmers. And that's all this is imo. software engineering is constant applied problem solving with respect to that domain.

Great video. I decided to start to learn how to code after i got out of the military due to a failed surgery. I was a Military Police Officer and i could no longer be in that field and i always had an interest in computers and things so i decided to give it a try. I am doing code academy right now and just finished the first part and im liking it so far but i have no gotten to the more complicated things yet. Hopefully i like it and can progress far enough to make this a career.

Coming from a slightly different place, I've gotten interested in this from an architecture background. Strangely enough...there are a lot of simularities! Architecture is about designing a project to best fit an answer, and you're never fully a "master" because there's always something new to learn. Seems to be pretty similar in that regard - but the design visualization and data analytics side of it is very ripe for cross-pollination.

@@Black.Sabbath not really, you do need to understand the basic principals of math though. coding is much more about logic than it is math, and math is actually derivative of those logic gates (technically, boolean algebra) in a CPU. it would however help to have background in algebra and very basic calculus fundamentals.

@@ironlake8944 If you are interested in web development then let me summaries it for you. It has three parts, FrontEnd, Backend and Database. It is called full stack development. In front end you will need to learn HTML, CSS(Bootstrap framework or tailwind framework, my suggestion is Bootstrap) and Java Script(React framework or Angular framework, my suggestion is React). In backend there are many languages, my suggestion will be JavaScript (both Express and Node framework) For Database also there are many options, my suggestion will be MongoDB. To save and track all of your files, you should learn GitHub. If you learn these things individually then you will never know how much percentage you will have learn to start your career. Because there is no limit(I mean everything is vast) in each language and framework. So you should take ONLY one course from KZbin or any other learning website. DON'T refer multiple notes and multiple courses.(You have your whole life to explore this world. Right now, to get started you will have to learn minimum things to become a developer). I will suggest cheapest course on udemy(10 to 15 USD, there is always offer on udemy, don't buy courses on full price, wait for someday and check regularly if you don't see any offer). Take course by Dr Angela Yu or Colt Steele. I will suggest you should take Dr Angela course and start learning. If you are not interested in investing then I will again say that you should take ONLY one course from KZbin or any other learning website. DON'T refer multiple notes and multiple courses. I hope this helps.

I just watched your video and I just wanted to say that something you didn't touch on that's actually very important is security. As a senior full stack developer I see far too many junior developers that have no idea about information security even tho it is a core part of the business. I don't know of any courses personally but I think it's extremely important that you have a fundamental understanding how to build secure applications and what common vulnerabilities are in whatever language and framework you are working in (maybe just owasp top 100). It's also not that complicated and probably wouldn't add more than a few weeks of learning. After all everything connected to the internet will eventually be attacked by some bored teenager or professional group.

I just turned 16 like two months ago and I have wanted to learn coding and computer science since I was a freshman because I learned that I was one smart enough to try it out and two I love nerdy stuff like coding. The thoughts of me making a living off of needing out and solving problems sounds so amazing. Bravo on the courage and effort and making a change in your career, but there are some things that I think are also important to point out on your video. You are right, anyone can learn to code and it doesn't require a CS degree (and I am saying this as someone who does have a CS degree), but a CS degree is much more than just some coding courses and learning how the computer works. It involves many fields that lead the tech world of today such as Machine Learning, AI, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics and that's just to name a few. Without the proper tools, and the deep understanding of the mathematics and algorithms that are part of these fields you will not fully understand why or how these things work. I mean sure, you can build a Machine Learning model from pytorch or some other library out there and it will probably work fine, but the CS degree will give you the tools to understand how it works, and there for you will most likely build something better. What I am ultimately trying to say is that a Web Developer is probably considered to be at the very low end of programming because it doesn't require much, and in the opinion of many actually pretty boring and dull (but each to his own). Because of the never-ending demand for web developers and the understanding that it really isn't too hard, you have so many bootcamps for exactly those type of jobs. And about the title Engineer - tech companies and startups love the titles. The longer and more sophisticated the title is, the better. The title of Engineer is being thrown all over, which kind of disrespects for the people who actually worked hard for it - and you still have a long way my friend.

I actually had a similar situation! I studied economics in high school because it's way easier to land a job at banks, consultancy bureaus or insurance agencies in my country. The pay is also really high at some of them and the employee benefits are good too. Once I got an internship at one of the insurance companies, it wasn't exciting anymore after a week of work. I sat behind my desk from 8 to 4, occasionally printing some documents, running errands, and whatnot. Truth to be told: I was bored as hell. I get it; a lot of people like this work and I truly admire them, but no sir, that work ain't it for me. Decided to start with programming last year and enroll in college. I'm currently studying C++ and Python. I like the idea of actually solving problems and it's such a refreshing feeling. (It has its quirks too, but it's a nice change of pace for me.
