Oh yeah, I unquestionably had this experience, though nothing nearly so dramatic as gap jumps. That I'm still working on. But, near my house, there's a frolf course that has some interesting MTB-able features. There's a ten-ish foot high plateau which has a tee-off on it. On the west side, there is a moderately steep descent off the plateau and down to the paved path. I spent about an entire week coming here and just chickening out for hours at a time. Finally, I was right on the lip, and I decided to just put my feet on the pedals, which I did and it carried me safely to the bottom. I was very stoked. When I first started jumping it was at a local BMX park, so it wasn't as impressive as this, but that was pretty cool as well.

Really enjoyed that video. That was really fun watching both of you try to overcome those challenges. Let’s face it, gap jumps scare the shit out of all of us. I think the best way is to just have a good friend lead you into the jump. For me, gap jumps were a pretty big mental block, until I just hit a few of them and realized that they arnt actually any different than tables. Only difference is that there's just less work for the trail builders so they can put more effort into making sure the lip and landing are perfect. As long as you have the right speed (which is why you get someone to tow you in) and you don't treat gaps any differently, you'll be fine!

I took a clinic with Rich Drew over the weekend in San Diego and all of the repetition gave me the confidence that I needed to jump. Definitely know how you feel when you were clearing those gaps. Jumps always seem smaller on camera . That said my local Forrest has many gap jumps im absolutely terrified of , many big ones but a few gap jumps that are only 1 or 1,5 bike lengths. The jumps in your video seem so nice , mostly dirt jumps and no trees around , I'm terrified of the jumps in my forest because they're all build out of wood and if I don't jump off correctly of that wood lip it's gonna send me flying who knows where . If that was a table I wouldn't have any problem hitting it . But I have a 100 mm full suspension , and I don't even know if it's the best idea to be doing these kind of jumps with it . But thanks for your video , it gives a bit more confidence and shows how you move while flying :)
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel you. Gap jumps are so mental! A bit more suspension would definitely be more forgiving and reduce the chances of crashing. I know for sure that that extra travel has saved me before.

Thanks! Except for the bit with me talking in the beginning, it's just a GoPro HERO10. But it's also about the settings, editing, and color grading. I did a video on my settings. It's here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHmZaZafZ65sr7s I've only made a couple tweaks since then. Now, I shoot at 24fps and use 5500 color temp instead of 5000. Hope that helps!
