I used the same method as you when I practiced presentations in English during my early days: watching Disney channel (mostly), combined with imitating all the dialogues, sometimes acting in front of the mirror, or imagined being interviewed by someone on a certain subject. Imitation is the first step in learning anything, really. Another aspect that I think worth mentioning is that by leaving the TV/ radio on and not actively listening to it (while doing chores, for example), your subconscious still picks up a fair amount of how natives deliver their spoken language. This is inactive learning - just like how a child must be able to hear in order to learn how to speak in the first place. One other thing that I did was learning rap songs. Yes, rap. Mostly Eminem, because I found his articulation the clearest. Once I've had enough habit of mouth movement from rapping, my accent came out more naturally. Rapping as cardio for your mouth muscles works wonder.

English is my second language. Speaking English has been really difficult for me, especially when it comes to conveying my ideas to others in a clear and pronounced manner. Your advice has proven to be incredibly helpful and practical. I'll attempt to imitate a native speaker. Likewise, I'll read passages from the novels I like the most. Thanks for your sharing your methods. Keep up the good work!

I was born in Germany and spent the first 20 years of my life there. However, since my parents are turkish, I grew up speaking Turkish and learned German in kindergarten and school. Currently, I reside in Turkey, and I find myself struggling with effective communication in all three languages. While I learned english through interactions with strangers in video games and consuming english content in general, I consider myself lacking proficiency in all of these languages. Now I'm faced with the dilemma of determining which language to prioritize. Although the decision ultimately depends on my personal goals, I must confess that I currently lack a clear direction or objective. And yes, I used Chat GPT's help to write this text, which just proves my point once again. :')

To know 3 languages is a gift. I suggest start working on the language least easy for you. Your mental muscles will be in a constant workout and then the other languages will be a breeze. Also, whenever you do have kids ( my apologies if I'm assuming you don't!), make sure they learn all 3 languages before age 7. This is the golden age of linguistics and children pick up upto 6 languages in this age group. And the more languages learnt, the higher the IQ, no matter the age. So yes, please don't disregard any language you know as unimportant!

We are so much creatures of learned habits, after a while we believe that our way of communication is who we are, even if we don't like it, but like all habits it can be changed, if we really take an interest and learn the necessary skills until it becomes a new habit. Thanks for pointing us the in right direction Vinh 🙂

I am an immigrant in the US and English is my first language, but people get frustrated understanding me and I have gotten a little annoyed that I was speaking English and they acted like I was speaking another language.I kept my irritated feelings hidden.I also speak Spanish (not something I mostly learnt naturally) and it is a bit embarrassing that sometimes I feel like I am speaking good Spanish, but native speakers don't get what I am saying I will use that strategy for both English and Spanish.

OMGGGG! This is something I have been struggling with. Even though, I have been working as an English teacher for like more than 3 years now and I am pretty confident about my speaking skills, but sometimes when I listen to the records of me speaking in English, I feel like I don't pronounce words clearly. And then I just get really frustrated and upset. And of course I always try my best to practice and improve my pronunciation every day obviously. But still I can't speak as clearly as I wanted or expected to. And I asked myself if it's because of my VIETNAMESE ACCENT or something. And you know I've even had ambition to have American accent coz I love American accent. But NOOO! It's not about the ACCENT you have. It's about your ARTICULATION. "Your accent is never a problem. My goodness! Your accent is what makes you unique. It's what makes you flavor. It's what gives you character. Accent is never a problem. The problem doesn't lie with your accent. The problem lies with your ARTICULATION." Omg! I stumbled upon your video while I was really struggling with my pronunciation. Thank you so so much for sharing and giving me and others the INSIGHT into speaking English!!! This is probably one of the most enlightening things I've learnt since I started learning to speak English.

Hey Vinh, I’m not teow chew but I knew what u said! Haha! Thanks for tips and this is very helpful. In my humble opinion though, English is still your first language 😊First two were your mother tongue and dialect. English was your first language you actually learnt. I am from Malaysia and English is my 3rd language. My mother tongue is Cantonese, first language (started at age 6) is Chinese/mandarin (went to Chinese school). Then the Malay language as national language and then English (started at age 8). It was all Chinese speaking at school and Cantonese at home and with friends. To be honest, as you grown up in Australia, English is basically your day to day language since primary school although you don’t speak at home. For me, I didn’t even need to speak English until I started to work and it was only minimal. I only started speaking English when I started to work in the UK.

'Mouth movements' sound much better than 'mouth muscles characteristics'. Gonna steal your term for my students, thanks! :)

Okay I got this video randomly suggested in my homepage aaaaaaand this is actually very accurate. Alot of people struggle with the mouth movement especially me because english is my 3rd language. I tried 5 minutes mouth movement training everyday, whether some random facebook or reddit post or could be trying to mimic someone from youtube. It is really hard to sounds like native especially for someone like me because I am not a fast learner. Bery cool video!
