The moment we shift our attention from "ME" to outside world and on external environment, this shyness and awkward feeling goes away. Worked for me instantly

I had been thinking about this quite recently too. The more self-conscious I am at a moment, the more shy/awkward I get. Once I have a stronger sense of self/purpose/direction, the awkwardness/self-consciousness dies down.

I hate the whole "Fake it until you make it" thing. It feels like lying. It feels disingenuous. But *practicing* confidence... rather than "faking it" ... I can get on board with that. That's not a lie. That's just working on the skill.
@blackstar.y93572 жыл бұрын
I think what he means more is that that practice will give u the push u will need. Because personally i have done presentation over presentation over the years and it has not worked. And i agree that maybe if i would only focus now on the other person's brain, on how what im gonna transmit will help them, instead of me, it can do the trick. It's not like one will fake it the rest of their lives, it's just the beginning facade that will portray whom u will become with this practice:) At the end of the day it depends how u wanna see it, like any other life topic, but in my opinion i think it's great advice:)
@ryudi19982 жыл бұрын
I mean, “fake it until you make it” can do wonders too; like going to sleep, “being happy” (people say that smiling can trick/lie your brain into thinking that you’re actually happy), seeing new things from a new perspective (you can only see a different point of view if you pretend to believe in it for a while I guess), etc. It depends on what you’re using it for, but overall I think it's a powerful tool to begin something wonderful

What I've taken away from the "fake it to you make it" slogan, is that just jumping in and doing the work is a far better teacher than any amount of school will ever give you. They say that as a way to get people to stop over thinking and just do the thing in order to get better at it, this, "making it".
@joksantelles1297 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that we underestimate our capabilities and come to feel deceived that we can't do this or that. Maybe at the beginning it feels strange to 'fake it' confidence (or whatever else), but eventually you'll achieve that goal.

I've suffered from over shyness and lack of confidence,all my life. I've got through life by using my practical skills. Ive never been able to contribute within meetings or say what i really want to say. It makes me ill thinking about an upcoming meeting or a seminar. I've tried everything. My previous Employer (were i worked for 30 year) sent me on a training course many years ago to improve my communication skills, All it was back then, was me, standing on an empty stage in a theatre with no audience, and reading from a script. I've learnt more from watching a few of your videos on how to be more confident and less shy. However Its the doing it in public I cant overcome. I hope after watching more of your videos it helps me overcome my fears. Many Thanks

I remember my first public speaking class in first semester in college back in 2019 i was like "Shit here we go again" even tho i was pretty sociable i had stage fright and i was so shy to talk infront of a CROWD of classmates and a teacher who is 100% confident in when it comes to speaking to a crowd. what i thought was i will pretend that i am alone in the classroom and just rehearsing my prepared speech, and oh boy i nailed that presentation and class mates started always putting me in group debates when teachers ask for a debate i was the person, cuz they said "i inspire confidence" just hearing those words made me more confident in speaking to crowds. Your thought process is perfect for ppl who are shy and want to become more confident in their speaking/communication skills

My problem with implementing all of this is that I am unable to handle the amount of social pressure I feel after expressing myself as an outgoing person. Like putting on makeup, I feel that I've raised the standard for myself when I behave confidently, and people expect for me to show up with a full face of makeup and a confident personality all the time. I simply can't maintain it all of the time, because it requires too much energy. I'm too introverted to implement these tips, since people expect me to act this way and it is incredibly draining to do so.

I completely agree! Overcoming shyness is a journey that requires practice and self-reflection. I used to feel out of place at social events, but shifting my mindset made a huge difference. Joining the Sense of Humor Improvement Program by Habit10x taught me that humor can break the ice and foster connections. I learned that a well-timed joke can lighten the mood, but sometimes it’s the fear of crickets that holds us back. Just remember, embracing your quirks and sharing stories can make you relatable-keep practicing, and you'll shine in any social setting!

You can take up acting or comedy Vinh. Thank you so much for your tips, sir. Here's what I took away. How to look and gradually actually be confident 1. Improve posture. Use open posture. Use good eye contact. 2. Stronger level of volume 5-6 level. End the sentence on a lower pitch. Use PAUSE more. 3. Be genuinely curious. Ask the other person three follow-up questions. For example, if someone loves hiking ask them, what motivated them to take hiking as a passion? What is the hardest thing about hiking? Who do they look up to/who is their hero? 4. Elaborate on your reply. But keep it succinct, engaging, and interesting (This is my thought not Vinh's). 5. Have stories ready to share. To keep a good inventory of stories write down even smaller events that were interesting in the day.

My battle with shyness is quite unique, I would say, in that, I am not shy around successful, savvy, wealthy people. But my lack of confidence and shyness overcomes me when I am with "small" people. People who would be considered as far less savvy, far less worldly, far less exposed to society. I've been really trying to understand whats going on. I live in a third world country in SEAsia and when I'm in Europe I'm super confident. When I'm back here, I'm overcome with shyness. I'm analyzing myself and have come to understand that the root of my shyness and crippling social anxiety is really coming from the fear of offending or weirding-out the very simple-minded, religious, tightly-wound, judgmental members of society who still believe, for example, that divorce is a sin against God. I've been surrounded by these "small people" all my life thus far, and really, I can say that they will judge you from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, as being, "Cocky, arrogant, sinner, slutty" etc etc etc. if you don't behave and speak like "mama Mary". And they make those judgments really just because they're (please excuse me for the term), "nobodys". Their mindsets are really backwards. But these people represent the majority of those around me and these are the people who really have kept me in social anxiety and a lack of confidence. For example, I had dinner with one of the wealthiest families in Scandinavia the other month and I just felt SO RELIEVED to be able to talk, move, think, and express myself THE WAY I AM. I felt so damn FREE. And it was that night during that dinner, that I realized, that I am not actually an inherently shy or socially anxious person! I just get so stressed feeling like I have to pull myself down to the level of other people and THATS what has me acting all shy and crippled with anxiety! It was SUCH an eye-opening moment for me!

My main problems after trying out these tips: - Eye contact works fine, when I know the other person doesn't know a lot about the subject. If I know they're expert, eye contact makes me extremely nervous, because I feel like I'm talking non sense and they are judging me. - Pausing. This invites people to interrupt me and say stuff I just wanted to say or ask question about what I was about to say, making it seem like I forgot about these things.
