The name Pomodoro means tomato, which refers to the widely available little plastic tomato-shaped timers. There's a website that has more information about it, but in a nutshell, the suggestion is to set a timer to give you an external object to determine when you stop working, and when you start again. It's kind of like being an exoskeleton or an endoskeleton--some people need to create more external structure of organization, and some have it internally. There are gifts and challenges that come along with both of them. Best to you.

I never had to practice, I had periods where I wouldn't draw a thing for years and when I did it always was something really good. It's not skill, it's pure talent.

Underlying all these techniques and disciplines is a connection to Source (or whatever you want to call it). When I wanted to develop focus for ego, money, and status, that was a painful and unsustainable path. But when I turn off my mind and listen to my true Self, it’s much easier to focus on creating what I truly want.

You basically summarized in eight minutes what I spent the last decade researching and learning the hard way. And I can vouch that it does work. It all works together. You can overdose on exercise, but it won't work if you didn't sleep well. Likewise, you can sleep well and still feel horrible if you ate nothing but processed junk food the day before. In my case, I have severe sleep apnea and spent the aforementioned decade trying to resolve it. But despite getting to a point of good sleep, I still felt horrible. And I found it was because of my diet of nothing but heavy processed carbs and protein. And I got into this horrible diet because its what my body craved whenever I didn't sleep well. So again it's all interconnected. If someone is struggling with concentration issues, you might want to look at if you have a problem with sleep, diet or exercise. And chances are, if you have a problem with one, you'll also have a problem with the others.

Great advice! I’m 60 and never dealt with ADD my entire life until suddenly a couple of years ago, something happened to my brain and the crossword puzzles that I worked every day took 2-3 minutes to work suddenly took 10-12 minutes! I cannot focus or sit still. I know longer do any painting or drawing or even reading for more than a couple of minutes or so. I went from sleeping 9-10 hrs a night to no more that 6. This happened right after what I thought was a routine Tetanus shot but I found out that you cannot get a simple Tetanus shot anymore in the states, it has other vaccines in It now. Not saying that is the source but it is the only thing that was out of the ordinary. I so Certainly try those methods! You have accomplished so much! Great job!

@bodawei4253 жыл бұрын
The Internet has taken away the ability to focus from so many people. These days, it is so prevalent that young generations cannot focus on something at all. They fail school and the addiction is so strong (the habit + the social pressure) that it is difficult to escape it. The only solution I know is to put in place a system of good habits and stick to it. Also put emphasis on the process more than be obsessed by the result, as there will be failures and disappointment. It is the journey of daily improvement that is the goal, not the objective itself. This is very well put by Jono in his video. I recommend to read 'Atomic habits' from James Clear, very helpful. But most important is to implement and sustain the good habits on a daily basis, not only learn and read about it, that is to go from theory to practice, embrace imperfection along the journey and make incremental improvements on a daily basis.

Thank you for this video. I’d just like to agree with you as someone with ADD and a creative. I struggle with focus daily. Lol your cal-outs to basic tings like sleep, exercise, diet and meditation.. as well as time centered techniques, are a great reminder for me. The times when I’ve felt most in balanced in my life, are the times when those areas were almost automatic. I’m just now coming out of one of those creative burnout periods. So many emotional peaks and valleys. Focusing on rules just to break them and spending hours on quick-fix time management solutions that fade by the next day, Currently my life and creative business is full of constant struggles So yah. I had things working well. For many months/years, but had a rough period that kicked me in the head. Now My sleep is awful, diet not good, exercise weak and mediations are more like a desperate attempt at finding some peace for just a few minutes, rather than a welcomed part of my day. So thank you for this reminder. Your remark about how working on those basic things actually strengthen discipline in constructive way.. it set off a nice light bulb for me. Direction and.Purpose is lacking fo me, so I know I need discipline ... but my attempts have been failing. I realize now that the trifecta is a natural way and likely the best way of helping me after this burnout. I’ve done it before many times in my life, I just forget. With focusing on the trifecta to improve each area .. together they create a natural flowing discipline. If I’m remembering my past correctly.. One that I’m less likely to rebel against or sabotage . As long as I don’t view it as rules.. more as aligning myself to a direction that will benefit me and my focus.

I was diagnosed with ADD as a child and started doing research in my late 20's, two things that helped me the most was: Cut out caffeine-especially coffee (I know. It sucks.) I used to drink a cup or two a day, normally morning and midafternoon. But trust me..the effects of caffeine on a person with ADD is just insane. Which may sound obvious but I never realized just *how badly* it affected me. I had come to think of that aspect of myself as simply a "part of my personality", and only after I quit and realized the enormous difference in my behavior and ability to "sit down and do something for more than 8-10 minutes" did I understand just how much of a difference it made. The second thing is processed food. Now, I know every one is different. But processed foods almost do the same as caffeine, except with the added issue of making me moody/and or depressed. Being depressed/frustrated/angry and also unable to focus on anything so as to improve that mindset is sheer hell. It was rough but once I cut those out it was like I was a completely different person who was far more capable than I thought I could be.

Three things that have helped me are 1) Being kinder to myself and appreciating what I _do_ get done 2) Setting *tiny* / specific goals for every day 3) Taking 3-6 breaks per day to go over reminders that fill me with existential dread. Nothing motivates me like existential dread. I have only been doing this for a month but so far I've drawn for 13hrs and written for 22hrs - only 1.8% and 2.9% of November so far, but still a lot more than I would have managed otherwise. I also started tracking my time, which is surprisingly easier to get into than one might think.

Thank you so much for this video. I've always found it hard to find good advice about being productive as a creative *with* ADD (partly for lack of knowing I had ADD for most of my life, but even so, a lot of advice out there just doesn't do for me) and had to figure it out myself through trial and error, and came mostly to similar conclusions. A few things that worked for me, in addition to your recommendations - watching my omega 3 and iron intake in particular, through supplements or diet (the iron part applies especially if you're female - and of course, have a balanced and healthy diet in general). I've tried a bunch of supplements (bacopa and whatnot) and I'm not sure any of them did better than placebo, but watching these two help most noticeably for my memory and brain fog. - cutting out added sugar, sweets, sweet beverages including juices and alcohol. There is no evidence sugar causes or makes ADD worse *in itself* and I don't believe it is the case either, *however* cutting sugar out gives me a more constant level of energy and less of those distracting hunger pangs. Basically my day is less of a rollercoaster and I didn't realise how much diet - and sugar in particular - impacts that aspect. - using a light therapy lamp in the morning. There is preliminary evidence that an offset chronotype may be a cause or a contributing factor for at least part of ADD cases, and through experience, I find that it might be my case. Especially in winter, I had a terrible brain fog all day, as if I was super sleep deprived, despite sleeping 9-10 hours a night... but no more thanks to light therapy! I also suffer from winter depression, so this lamp changed my life in more than one way. - Also, sorting out personnal issues throught therapy helped tremendously in the sense that obsessive thinking was a huge problem for me, and although I did get better at shutting down unwanted thoughts, solving the root issues obviously freed a lot of brain capacity. In general, I've noticed that anything that gives you a satisfactory instant boost comes with downsides and it's better to act on several more subtle long-term factors to improve your baseline overall.

For someone who stays distracted, I deeply thank you for this! Focus is the main key when it comes to getting the job done and that's something I've been lacking this past year. I was on fire last year doing commissions, my own work, and participating in inktober. Now things have shifted for me... Life is funny, but I believe if you really want something or have a yearning and passion for it, you will go get it! I love the skill set you shared with the time increments and then taking small breaks. It worked for me for a while but distraction for me is like addiction. That's why self discipline is so important when it comes to this. And Jono you hit it on the head with the keys you gave out: Meditation, sleep, exercise, and diet. Without these keys you're practically dead when it comes to work and or even life in general. Looking at you, looking at your work, and hearing your voice, people wouldn't even think you suffered from ADD or ADHD. Your presence comes off as very humbling and well disciplined and it shows truly in your work. Sending many blessings your way @Jono Dry from the U.S. God bless you and the works of your hands. 🙏

You are so good at analyzing and finding solutions for your creative life. I'm going to try this for my own powerful creative evasion, the more you avoid focusing and working the more scary it becomes, hopefully this can break thre vicious cycle. You are very helpful, thank you.

that awkward moment when you want to be professional artist but don't want to practice or do any kind of hard work in general tho.
Same. What can we do? To help us with the practice and hard work.

I don't have ADD, but I do have a lot of trouble concentrating. I fall asleep at like 4-6 am and wake at 12ish.

Thanks for sharing your tips ! Actually, knowing that you're struggle sometimes with concentration regarding your amazing art give me hope ^^ For me is just like i have so much ideas/project that i want to do, but i struggle to channel my energy. It's really frustrating because in mind, all is done but when it come to express it's hard. I hope it's clear because it's not something easy to explain and google trad may not alway be friendly ah ah. Support from France :)

I bought a plastic container and filled it with snacks. I try to take it everywhere with me (when I remember) because running low on fuel is the worst thing for the ADHD mind and body. We are no different than an overclocked PC, and without the right power (food) and cooling (rest) we crash (BSOD).

If you put a movie or tv show you've seen hundreds of times on in the background, you can trick your mind into thinking your task is the most entertaining thing in the room. It's not 100% effective, but it does help.

Thanks for this video, I’m just doing art as a hobby. But I’m also struggling with my focus and concentration, I tried the pomodoro technique and it didn’t work for me. But my sleep hygiene is terrible, so I’ll definitely give that a go and see if it works. 👍🏻

Thank you for creating a most inspiring video. You could consider doing more on this topic, it's so helpful. Amongst all meditation apps I found “ waking up “ by Sam Harris, most helpful and diverse. Great to have found your site🌱

Hi Jono. Great video! A very helpful thing for me was productive procrastination. It has become the main way I get things done. I'd love to have a conversation about it

Weird thing I found out here before I turned 70, my nurse told me that my doc thinks I have ADHD. I thought mainly it’s a child thing, not an old lady thing🤷🏼♀️

I haven't exactly learned anything new from this video, but to hear someone reaffirm that these strategies work and that they ARE important to our mental health is something I didn't know I needed. I've had an especially hard time getting others to respect my sleep schedule and... maybe hearing it from a nice looking man on youtube will help get the point across? Here's hoping.

I really struggle with concentration, and it didn't help that growing up I moved around so much and didn't have stability. Lately I have been going to a recovery group that incorporates meditation and it's been helping immensely! You're video has just affirmed this for me, and I'm glad I decided to look up tips from a fellow artist. Thank you so much! Also I absolutely LOVE the continuous piano loop from that Arcade Fire Photograph.
