This type of deal is right in the wheelhouse of Chris Sewall, who also has a KZbin channel. I know that he meticulously goes through everything before determining a value. In your case, I think that the short 24-hour turnaround really forced you to rush in a situation where you needed to take your time. If you find yourself in a similar situation, maybe it would be better to work the deal out in batches, like go through 10% of it, make a deal on that part, and then move onto the next chunk.
@caesarswgoh484 Жыл бұрын
A cool part two would be a collaboration with Chris to see how he would have thought about this deal and broken down the value off of what you knew at a time (especially if he didn’t seem this video so he didn’t know the full story going in)

Where do you get the "lost $10k" from? Sounds like your total spend was around $8k with travel, I'll throw in another $1k for the luggage, USPS, food & expenses, so call it $9k? I've been buying and selling collections for the last 10 years you should not be paying anywhere near 70% on a large collection. You are time is money and you have to factor that into the equation. On a large collection I pay close to 50% that's the highest. I have parts of collections that I bought from 4 years ago that I'm still trying to piece out and sell. The reason they're selling their collection is because they don't want to put in the time and work to do it.

aside from the kobe overlook (which im still not convinced the seller didnt know), i think this is a good lesson on how to evaluate a large collection purchase. someone selling their entirely collection in bulk should never be expecting to obtain 80% value, they should be more than willing to offer an even bigger discount because you are taking on all the work in one lump deal. your negotiations should really start no higher than 50% of what you are truly researching the retail value of the collection to be at. your purchase figure should be absolutely no higher than 60% of comp value because the time it takes to move all that stuff would far outweigh the minimal profits you would be getting anything higher than that.
