My grandfather built his home by hand. When getting ready to pour the front steps, he gathered all the beer cans he had drank while doing the construction, crushed them and used them as fill to create the porch. 😊 Miss that man.

Great job today Sean. I understand why you're taking breaks away from the wall work. If I'm correct it's so the disturbance to the soil as well as allowing the mortar to dry completely before continuing on with more digging? This part is difficult because patience is required. I'm so happy to see how the work is coming along. One more step closer to finishing.

This is fascinating stuff Sean. Watching you work so methodically, carefully and with considerable skill is just so enlightening. Look after that back and get a kneeler when you get the lime. Knee replacements will cost you so much time!!! 😊

Great job Sean. I understand the need for shoring up the walls and the way you are doing it as well. It seems like it will last almost forever like the big stone castles have. Have a wonderful day

In California the big black bees are Carpenter bees! They excavate holes in untreated wood to rear their young. They can & do cause structural damage!

Another very interesting video, Hercules. It amazes me, watching each step, how things were built way back when. Your historical knowledge is phenomenal. How lucky Lady Sam is to have such a brilliant mate/lord of the manor. What a find, when you first bought this property, that the "building blocks for your future construction endeavors, would come from your own on-site stone quarry!" Utterly amazing. The property also adores you, since you are utilizing its bountiful resources. Win, win. Onward and upward, they say. Be safe. I eagerly await the next page/chapter, wherever you takes us. Love watching from my cozy bed, upstairs, in the same type of 1-1/2 story structure as your cottage...only mine is 1937 Tudor- style, and yours is 250-300 yrs older. Many thanks for letting me into your "wonderful old world, French, country stone estate."

You always do fine work, Sean. It is admirable that you are doing the work in the traditional way. Please take care of your back….it only takes one wrong move. 😱….as you well know! Do you have knee pads? They will thank you, too! All that rock work is like a giant heavy jigsaw puzzle 🧩!! I sure appreciate your persistence, Sean! It is looking great! Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻

If there's room behind the front door for a staircase width - then in that corner start with a three step left turn then straight up that right hand wall, you would need to do a wooden joist hanger for the ceiling beams as you are opening up a stairwell. It would free up downstairs and upstairs room space to maximise what you have and there is no obstructive stairwork in the way when you walk in the door. Can only be used freely when the front door is closed so consider hanging the front door the other way round xx.

It's a carpenter bee - she'll eat out the heart of any untreated wood. I live in a log home and have an ongoing war with the nasty critters!

I should add, there are various traps that work well for keeping them occupied with something else, that doesn't require any insecticide. Amazon shows a bunch of them, most easy enough to build yourself as long as you get the hole size accurate to trick the bees. Good luck with them, Sean!

No carpenter bees do NOT eat wood!!!
@donnaduprey5197
@donnaduprey5197 Ай бұрын
@@lisajahn6839 you are correct - they don't EAT the wood, they carve tunnels into the heart of the log or board and nest, compromising the strength of the wood. Last year we struggled with them particularly badly when woodpeckers started digging into our log walls to get to the bee larvae deep in the logs that we didn't know were there. Thankfully they did, so we could do the necessary repairs to save the logs.

I used the term "eat", as in chewing it up and spitting it out, not as in swallowing it as food.

It don't need underpinning, that would not help with the lateral forces exerted from the earth outside that's halfway up the wall.
