I have pigmentation and I agree, we focus on it too much. Mine flares in the sun, but, it has also completely disappeared after a 2wk stint in Egypt. It's back again, it's so familiar, like a favourite relative, I just apply my makeup and eat biscuits.

Caroline 'doesn't need make up' Hirons, your video was fab! Pigmentation has bothered me for years, now in late 30s. Despite wearing SPF 50 (LRP Anthelios) 365 days a year, sun hats in summer, it's still a problem but now I've got my retinol, vit C & niacinamide game on, definitely seeing improvement. Using The Ordinary. Wish pigmentation didn't rule my life quite so much - puts me off hot holidays. Having said that Cornwall in May brought it out too...def no heat there!

Sarah Goodwin Hi i have the same problem and i want to order from the ordinary the products you mentioned. in which order do you use them day and night if you can please reply and what muisturiser you use on top day and night. thank you !
@mihaela12057 жыл бұрын
HI Sarah, how of you layer these products and how do you alternate them? Thanks!
@sarahg20227 жыл бұрын
Hi, I picked the products based on The Ordinary's regimen guide for pigmentation www.victoriahealth.com/editorial/the-ordinary-regimen-guide but haven't got all of them, as want to see what impact a few have first. They recommend layering water based products before oil. I use 2 in the morning, 2 at night - any more layers I find can 'peel' off when I apply sunscreen. PM: I use the Advanced Retinoid at night with Alpha Arbutin or Niacinamide. Alpha Arbutin I've found to lighten my entire face, so going to spot treat with that one. AM: Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% (Vit C) OR Niacinamide (never together) and Hyaluronic Acid. No set rule for alternating, I just look at my face and see what I think it needs. Moisturiser - I use Liz Earle Skin Repair Normal/Combo. Layers on top nicely. I think I need to get a physical facial sunscreen instead of LRP though, as chemical suncreen is still letting those rays through!

Sarah Goodwin Thank you very much !!
@sarahg20227 жыл бұрын
Hi, I layer 2 products max as you would use a serum. So cleanse, acid toner, Ordinary products (x 2), moisturiser, sunscreen, makeup! Alternating - no fixed rule, just switch them around depending on what I see my face needing.

Thank you Caroline so much!!! Pigmentation was one of my main skin concerns lately and although in the past (~3years ago) I had laser for acne, scarring and pigmentation (that worked amazing!)..after moving to Australia no matter SPF pigmentation came back. I found laser here in Melbourne not effective at all. You mentioned Neostrata and other practitioner brands, and I tried it! At first some products for pigmentation, then more acids based stuff. Now.. 2 months later, results are fascinating. Much less sun damage and generally my skin is soo smooth, redness reduced, not a single spot, whitehead or blackhead. I have NEVER HAD SUCH GOOD SKIN EVER BEFORE. And I didn't gave to spend a fortune! Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for this Caroline. I use The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% and like it a lot. I've seen places like beautypedia saying that the gritty texture means it's an unstable formula...weird. What I would say about it is that I recommend leaving it for a few minutes and then applying a soothing moisturiser or oil over the top (e.g. Rosehip or Argan).

Hi. I mentioned "gritty" in original post because Caroline mentions that's the texture for the DCL. I don't mind the gritty texture. I just wondered for £100 less was the Ordinary version comparable in effectiveness for skin/treating melasma? I really like it...

Pastyblob Pastyblob I love the ordinary vit c I don't mind the grit and the bit of a sting but yes it does melt right away with a serum mixed in.

Audrey Natalia but the problem with that is the solution is The Ordinary Vit C is water free to keep the vitamin C at its most stable. As soon as you add some moisturizer (which has water in) you're losing some of the efficacy of the Vitamin C

I have pigmentation from hormones, and I have Addison's Disease (Adrenal insufficiency). The dermatologist I saw gave me a prescription for a cream with 4% Hydroquinone. I am confident this is a "whitening" product you are warning us against. The tube was $150 USD, so I ended up getting from my "northern friends" for $50. This product did work, but I am very pale and I never go in the sun. However, the last time I was in Walmart, I found a cream with 3% hydroquinone for $5. Of course, I will not use these products again... but they did work! (I have seen pictures of people who have overused this product!)

I've had a couple of really large old age spots removed with liquid nitrogen by a skin specialist. OK, it stings for a few minutes and goes a bit red but then a brown scab (sorry) appears which, about a week after the treatment, falls off leaving new pink skin underneath which rapidly un-pinks and looks good. And currently I'm trying the 23 per cent vitamin C cream by Indeed Labs.

I'm not an expert but I have dry/dehydrated skin. I use The Ordinary's hyaluronic acid first, then the Vit C and then moisturiser and (a) I can feel the Vit C stinging a bit (which I think means it's working) and (b) this combination is very comfortable for me.

I have been using Indented scars peel from Devotedthings and the improvement is amazing. I am about to finish my 3rd bottle and will repurchase. It is more like a treatment lotion, because you don't wash it off or neutralize it. You might want to check the website as there are tons of Before and After photos. Oh, and I just went to the Paula's Choice website and checked out their Niacinamide Booster... this actually has vitamin c in it... so I guess it really can't be that bad!?🤔

Maria H , I read that it is a chemistry thing. Apparently, something in them chemically will produce a 1:1 complex that makes both ingredients useless. I think that there is a chance they could also form a sort of hydrogen peroxide when mixed. Not a chemist, just what I read.

I use whatever my skin feels like it needs. I probably wouldn't use vit c and retinol together mainly because they both need to sit on the skin first, otherwise cack on xx

Thanks for this great video and just to say, you really look good too without any make up!!! 🌹 I'm starting to get those little warts on my forehead. Can you recommend something that would help getting rid of them? Every morning I get up and see something else in my face which wasn't there when I went to bed and I don't actually want. 😣I really don't need warts as well 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you! Definitely need living in the sun year round...Questions: Can you use the DCL Vit C year round or is it just when treating sun spots? Also should you use a scrub while treating or just cleansers like you mentioned? Is microderm abrasion a good option or is that something to stay away from? Appreciate your help.

I started q switch low frequency laser today I think it's called revlite. My melasma/pigmentation darkens in summer/heat but it still stays with me during the winter although lighter in colour. Looks like I have bronzer on my cheeks when I'm not wearing bronzer. P50, drunk elephant vitamin c and Luna oil not helping.

I'm on differin & loving it. I use the cream but I'm wondering, Caroline uses the gel, is there a reason why gel not the cream so I suppose I'm saying which differin is best the cream or the gel 🙂

She used a cleansing towelette! ;P Just sharing the product that fades my lovely brown forehead splotches as quickly as they appear (and honestly, they havent shown back up since I've started using it...on my 2nd bottle btw). It's the Clarins Mission Impossible. I don't care that some say the ingredients aren't effective, it freaking works for me:) Also, it's a joy to use, softens, non greasy & such a pleasant scent. Thank you for sharing all of your glorious wisdom!

I want to be your best friend. I know, creepy, but I think you have the most amazing personality and sense of humor ever. Your skin care videos are so informative and they have guided me to take better care of my skin. I have old pigmentation from acne as well as sun spots. They're there. May never get rid of them. I can maybe get them to look a little less noticeable but at the end of the day, if my skin is in good condition and healthy, that's all I really care about. Now, would you say the Dr. Jart Ceramidin gel you showed is similar to the Tatcha Water Cream? It just seems to me like they are, perhaps the difference is in the ingredients?

Hi Caroline, are freckles considered a form of melasma? Can I treat them as if it's melasma? I get A LOT OF freckles especially in the summer time and I do religiously wear SPF 30 at least every day. My freckles are different sizes and colors, and I don't get them anywhere else on my body. And I'm not a ginger either! I'm Eastern European brunette! Thanks so much for 2 seconds of your time!

I didn't know you could layer acids! I've been using a retinoid cream (airol) for some acne that occured out of the blue and some pigmentation I've had for years on my forehead (by what you said I should have little hope for it!). It happened a couple of times where I brushed my teeth after applying the retinoid and it burned the sides of my mouth, so I've been scared s***less of using anything on top of that. Finally, to my question, I live in Greece where summer is just getting started. Do you think I could try and incorporate some vitamin C into my ritual, along with the retinoid, or just drop acids altogether until the weather cools off? I work in an office and use SPF 50 in the mornings when I go to work. Thank you so much for all this info! PS Pixi double cleanser is awesome, I will definitely re-order it when it's empty!

Do you have an opinion on Dermalogica Super Rich Repair as a night time moisturizer? Also, would you use the DCL in a nightly rotation with Good Genes and Drunk Elephant TLC? I rotate those after I use my P50 1970 at night. Thanks, I love watching you!

Hi Caroline. I was just wondering if you knew what the "Dermaprep" ingredient is that is in the Eve Lom brightening cream? I've looked at the ingredients and can't tell what the active ingredient is. I've been using it for a week and I think it's working lol. I don't have any brown spots but seems to have evened the general tone of my skin🎉

MsEclectic hello, I was about to buy this product but I too wondered what are the active ingredients?? Was it worth it? It’s quite pricey (here in Australia)

Dear Caroline, I need your help. Would you recommend the DCL for a reactive skin? (YES, I do have a reactive face, not sencitive, not rosecae, but yes, red as soon as you look at it and VERY reactive. I have used the Vit C by The Ordinary, which I love (for my hands) but allas it "set my face on fire" and I had to go on a hydrocortizone cure (ordered by derm). But I do want to use, if I can, Vit C as I do have pigmentation issues. Oh and I use Differine and Skinoren since about three years. Enough info? (Runs for cover as she expect a candle to be tossed at her head) Thank you for the time, I REALLY appreciate and help and info you can give me and thank you soo much for your videos, been following you for years and find them a fountain of information. P.S. I also use 7% Glycolilic acid by The Ordinary and Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Britening Toner (with tamarind and white netle)

stephanie sprinkle Hi, Stephanie, yes I do actually. I also have Pixi Glow Tonic and I find it just as good if not better simple for the fact that I find that it does not "sting" as Glow Tonic does. I like it a great deal, I hope you will too :)

Hi Caroline: Quick question if you have a moment to answer: In Canada we have a choice between P50t and P50PIGM 400 (ingredient restrictions). I do have some minor pigmentation spots which do not bother me all that much and wonder which formulation will give me the most bang for my buck from an anti-aging perspective . I am 53, light olive combination skin that is slowly heading to dry (particularly winter months). Thanks and kindest regards!

Quick question: would you use in the same routine Glycolic(glow tonic) followed by a hydrating toner and then prescription tretinoin? For reference, I use tretinoin 2x week as advised my dermatologist and I mix it with my moisturizer as the tretinoin cream available in Greece doesn't spread well and I tend to apply more than needed and end up a mess. Mixing it with the moisturizer does the trick and it also helped me get (somewhat) rid of psoriasis scales on my forehead.

This is making me question again my daily application of SPF, every day, day in and day out, for at least 10 years, whether I am stay in the house all day or just walk to the office for 15 minutes each way. Not too bothered about pigmentation, but I was advised to do it, because exposure to uva. How exposed am I to uva every day in England, in my north facing bunker style office I do know. How much uva protection do I get from my SPF 20 la Roche posay / avene moisturiser I haven't got a clue. How long does my skin stay protected from UVA with a dollop of afore mentioned moisturiser with SPF applied at 7:00, I do not know and it kills me. Applying something when I don't know what happens if I am not doing it kills me. I know what happens when I don't brush my teeth/ apply deodorant in the morning but I don't know what happens if I stop applying SPF in the morning when I am not going to purposefully sunbathe. What I hate the most is feeling guilty when I realise that the moisturiser I applied in the morning didnt have SPF in it. My SPF demons need to know :)
@solangepolegar7 жыл бұрын
tsunimee everywhere where there's light, there's technically UVA and UVB. So you're always exposed, even through screens. But if you live in a "darker" place, you don't need to go all crazy with it. Wearing SPF every day is a great thing you do :) the SPF in skincare (moisturiser) and in makeup gives a bit of protection, but, as is common knowledge, SPFs are only effective for a couple of hours, so just applying it once a day may not suffice. Especially on clear days, you really should reapply sunscreen before going out - and every two hours, if it's continued exposure. So on your morning commute, if you go out on your lunch break or for doing errands... you should reapply before stepping outside. In those cases, your cosmetics (foundation, moisturiser) only work IF freshly applied (less than two hours ago). If you don't want to disturb your makeup, or you're not into a big fuss, there's Bioderma and La Roche Posay SPF mists. They're little spray bottles you can carry in your purse. If you're sun bathing, apply every hour (and, of course, don't be out in the sun in the peak hours). The consequences? Well, as you said, it's a long term benefit and, if you don't get severely sunburnt or pigmentation, you won't see immediate benefits. It works in the backstage, it's your best anti-aging friend, and the only thing you will find is that you'll be concerned about wrinkles and age spots a lot later in life. I personally wish I knew that 20 years ago... I hope this helped and that I haven't given you any wrong advice, but this is what I've collected from watching Caroline and other skincare experts, and reading :)

Hi caroline! Im just about to begin my new and improved skincare routine, thanks to you! Waiting for a 3% lactic acid toner (January labs) and a vit c serum (youth to the ppl) to arrive. I have dry, a bit sensitive, fair, and very prone to pigmentation skin. i have spots that have been with me since early 20s...And some new ones I'd like to try and treat... What are your thoughts about melanin inhebiting serums for an extra support? And especially *arbutin* ??? Is it safe to use?

Hi Caroline. Thank you for all the information. I have a few questions: Is Clinique fresh pressed good for pigmentation or just prevention? I have those zelens drops. Can I use d-drops day and night? Is 8-flower nectar and JR vital balm ok for sensitive skin(I have murad hydro-dynamic and claims hydraquench at the moment). How does Thank you Farmer compare to Clarins UV Plus 50? Thank you:)

I use a prescription retinoid cream (for acne maintenance not for pigmentation) at .025% and I always thought that was a pretty low dose. Does anyone know what percentages of retinol are seen as higher/lower/etc.? I know you can go all the way down to .01% and up to like 5% or something crazy like that....but is .025% potentially too high for daily use with acid toners/etc.?
