This video includes my new mantra and also how I am getting faster as a middle aged runner. I hired Matt Fox of SWEATELITE to coach me through a 5k/10k speed block and this is an update of sorts -- as in -- I sort of look at how I am getting faster, which is difficult without referencing too much of the data. For the marathon training later in the summer, I will definitely incorporate more details.
I would explain further but I think it's best for you to just watch the video.
I do post more regularly on the training for members, which you can join for very not a whole lot of money right here. As always there's plenty of light-heartedness and humor. And a clip from a cringy movie I shot a long time ago from another life.

Consistency and not getting injured is the key. See so many runners go much harder than neccesary thinking it will get them fitter faster then get hurt.

I'm impressed with your conversational pace. As a master I could not go sub 3 until I ran less miles creating my own mashup of Hanson & Hill Repeats. I never ran more than 16 miles, some 2-a-days & Hill repeats put me in Zone 3 & 4 quickly and on less miles, worked on turnover coming down. I built strength & cardio and had super fresh legs on race day that enabled me to cut negative splits necessary for me to go sub 3. Good luck.

Thanks for the input! I just heard a podcast with the race director and there is apparently 250ft of gain from mile 2 to 3.5, so I better get used to hills. A lot a lot of hills. And the course ends with a big hill too so it will be a challenge

Interested in your reflections shifting from a marathon focus to speed focus. 0:05 Do you feel it’s a good idea to alternate between speed and endurance, like you said building the pyramid base, now building its height? For reference I was training for a 10k, now I’m focusing on half marathon. Going for it next week, wondering about shifting to 5/10k before going back to half marathon or marathon depending on where I’m at.
@MidLifeRunner
@MidLifeRunner Ай бұрын
Yes. I have seen a lot of elite and sub elite athletes doing this lately. It makes sense. Marathon pace is a fraction of your top pace, so if we go improve the top pace, then slide back into race specific endurance training = PR (most likely). My coach thinks 10-12 weeks of marathon specific work (longer long runs with MP etc should be enough while doing some speed work to keep the gains from 5k and 10k training .

Are you going to record the sub 18:45 or maybe give a race recap? I am not sure I’ve seen something like that on the channel. I know shoes are the gateway to the personality presenting them. @@MidLifeRunner I outlined my 5K plan/approach in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmrQhoWQlN99a6M). I'm not doing a race, rather a TT at the end of June. I will also be doing a recap of the TT and next steps (I think I'm going to stick with this type of running for most of the year, I'm enjoying it). I have done training series before, like for my NYC Marathon build last fall. I'll do them again for sure. Topics I covered on the podcast will definitely be on the channel as well as training content/ideas. Case in point my recent "Laying Bricks" video. The definitely would have been something I did as a Podcast episode prior. Thank you for the support though. I dig what you are doing on your channel as well. I love how contrasting out styles are in all of this (though your humor definitely resonates with me, 👍🏻).

Do you really need to hire a coach in breaking 3? You are just 2-3 mins to get to that time. On a good day, and with your hardest effort on a marathon run, you will achieve it. I am sure of that.
@MidLifeRunner
@MidLifeRunner Ай бұрын
Maybe I could reach sub 3 with no coach and just keep some speed work and do 20+ mile long runs etc…but I often have questioned how much speed I need to keep and when to transition to MP block. With a coach, I don’t have to waste any mental energy on training - I can just run what he prescribes. I think I will be in closer to 2:50 shape by October so I am optimistic for the sub 3.
@hkim9151
@hkim9151 Ай бұрын
@@MidLifeRunner we all know you can do it …. You could have done sub-3 if you did not have carry the gears to film the run and waste your breath in talking to the camera- but it is all good. We see how you actually run it and not just looking at strava. No need to think! Here is my free prescription to you. Tuesday - 1.5hr speed interval track work , Wednesday 10 miles easy run…..Thursday, 10 miles tempo run, Friday 10 miles Easy run, Saturday 10 miles Easy run, Sunday church of a long run 20+ miles. Monday is your rest day. This schedule for every week of this year, next year and every year after that. No need to struggle to plan anymore than that. 😝… feel free to switch up Thursday and Friday exercise depends on your legs conditions. Easy Peasy.
