So many same AND opposite goals! Buy less yarn? Check. Knit what I love? Check. But also I want to knit more intentionally , less spontaneously, remember to lengthen my sweaters/tops to accomodate my long torso, and focus more on summer weight knits because of the hot climate where I live! Hearing your goals was super helpful in thinking about my own!

My goal of using up my stash was realized a couple of years ago. I.limited my buying to special occasions as well as can’t pass up sales. I’m down to a basket of yarn that have projects assigned and looking for future knits. Fortunately I’m content right now knitting on my scrappy mitered shawl/blanket, hat, and shawl.

It was so nice to hear someone else talking about wanting to be more open to spontaneous cast-on amid everyone talking about intentional knitting! I might not be a natural planner, but I do feel pressured to always plan out my knitting and stick to it because knitting takes a lot of my time and money and I cannot 'risk' being spontaneous and ending up wasting my resources on something I'm dissatisfied with blah blah blah... Honestly it actually works pretty well with me most of the time, but it does also happen that I get super inspired to cast on something, have the appropriate type & amount of yarn and everything but then push aside the motivation only because 'I'd better stick to the plan and be on the safe side'. But at the end of the day, I knit for pleasure and have no intention to monetise it whatsoever, so I do really want to loosen up a but and allow myself to have more fun, go with the flow and see how things turn out and fear less about things not turning out 'right'.

Before you invest in color analysis, do some searching on people who have specific drapes for asian skin tones which are very different from the traditional color drapes. I think there are unique companies who do this. You may in fact be a winter but in the traditional color analysis systems, asians are typically identified as winters across the board when more than half are actually warm toned and are incorrectly categorized. Seeing the colors you choose, I do think the winter colors look great on you!

I have a very simple pullover recipe that’s just plain stockinette. It’s made where it can be a V-neck or a crewneck, but other than that it’s just a plain old worked top-down set in sleeve pattern. I love the result it gives me and I’ve knit three of them for myself! You can never go wrong with something tried and true in my opinion

One thing about the summer knits that I have been interested in (having never made one) is the possible new techniques I might learn from knitting them to just incorporate into my knitting skills by taking on a smaller less costly project. My stash is out of control. Nothing is displayed where I can see what I already have and I have so much unraveled yarn from thrift ship sweaters that I loved but rarely used. The unraveling was comfort and the making with it quickly flew out of my head with all the pretty yarns out in the market. I'm off work next week and plan to really go through my stash and decide what goes and organize what's left in a better way.

Your goals are very inspiring! My only 2023 goals were to destash, buy less yarn, and to learn to spin my own yarn. I destashed about 75 pounds of acrylic scrap yarn (I had accumulated over about 30 years) to a local group who crochets granny square blankets for local shelters. I bought less yarn than usual (but because I've been buying wool instead of acrylic, it's more expensive), and I learned to spin on both a drop spindle and a wheel. Goals for 2024 are to knit and crochet with more of my handspun, save my fiber budget for the NH Sheep and Wool Festival in May, and to spin enough yarn to knit a sweater (and knit it).

Lovely episode as always - you are so insightful and well-spoken. It’s interesting hearing your thoughts on summer knits - I always wonder if content creators actually wear their knit tanks and tees. I live in a warmish climate (NC) and it gets too hot in the summer here for anything hand knit imo although I haven’t personally tried it. I’m also such a slow knitter still that I need the summer months to work on wooly sweaters regardless.

I share a lot of similar goals to you! I haven’t had these as explicit goals until now but your goals around spontaneity and magic numbers really resonate with me! I’m also a big planner when it comes to knitting and want to have more room for spontaneous cast ons while still having some sort of intentionality to what I’m casting on and how it fits with my existing wardrobe. Still figuring out how to balance those 😅. I also think getting the right numbers for ease and length are so important for loving your knits and will simplify so much of the knitting process! 100% working on nailing mine down. I have one pull over sweater, one cardigan, a few socks, one t-shirt and one tank top in my knitting plans this year. I also am starting the Petiteknit Moby Neck which I'm super excited about! I also have plans to knit wool baby clothing for my last baby. I have already knit my 2 year old his sweater. My 9 year old requested a set of fingerless mitts with matching slouchy hat that I just cast off and weaved in the ends and she is currently working on her sweater with my assistance since she is just learning how to knit

I _have_ instituted a yarn ban for myself this year - I'm hoping to move house sometime maybe next year, so working through what I already have will help out with that too. I think it's really good to have some direction or intention, even if you don't really stick to it. I do feel like on some level, your success is largely because you knit to the algorithm, conscious or not. You have a sizeable following, and I think you now have permission to knit that second navy raglan you've been eyeing ;). I also wanted to address the gift knitting / knitting what you want to. Sometimes, I cast on something that I really want to knit, but won't necessarily use. It goes straight into my gift knit box after I'm done. That way if people want something or it's gifting time, I or they can just dig in. I highly recommend.

February is definitely not too late to settle on annual goals. Personally I tend think of the start of spring as the "real" start of the year, so I end up making vague NY resolutions and then settling on some "real" goals over the next couple of months. It's smart to allow yourself a little more freedom from sticking strictly to plans. Hopefully that will increase your enjoyment of knitting overall. I'm looking forward to seeing the projects you work on from your books, and I'd be interested in hearing more about what you think of each of title.

Lately, I've been wondering a lot whether I should still knit for myself at all, even though I love it. I simply have more than I need. I don't like summer knits and I live in a moderate climate, so I wear handmade woolen sweaters for only half a year. But this is perhaps more of a philosophical question than a strictly knitting one.

I love hearing everyone sharing their Knitting goals ✨ I think making what you truly want to make is really important, and recently I’ve found myself thinking about what I can make that will be interesting on my youtube channel - instead of what I actually want to make. But I think anyone watching appreciate seeing what people love making, even if it is a «boring» raglan sweater. I loove the colour navy on you, so I’m pro more navy sweaters 😍 I recently got a colour analysis! I did an online one tho, because I couldn’t really find an in person option in Oslo. I made a video about it if you’re curious. But yeah; totally recommend!!

In January I purchased 8 skeins. I have yet to start the projects that I intended to use them for and I only knit with 4 skeins from stash on a wip. It is interesting to be cognizant of this and realize I don't need to keep buying.

gotta agree w/ the commenters who like your beige room bc it's not distracting from you or your projects. but learning abt interior design sounds like fun. /i think making the same pattern in 2 different colors or yarns would be a good thing, and quicker the 2nd time...but i haven't done it so far./ gotta say, i'm skeptical abt professional color analysis; instead, maybe get Carole Jackson's Color Me Beautiful-written in 1980, so a few things are dated [like assembling a work wardrobe, iirc], but it's very down-to-earth abt color choices to go with various skin tones, and includes some advice on makeup, accessories, etc---and a page for each season with 'tiles' of that season's colors. i tore out the Winter page so i could take it shopping ;-). / knitting random gifts and waiting for them to find homes is brilliant; thanks for reminding me to make hats for the local hat donation project. 🙂

Love in Stitches on KZbin just posted her knitting intentions for this year too so not late. It takes time to thoughtfully create such a list and January is recovery month in my opinion. I’ve already started my gift knitting for the next holiday season. I’m embracing the fact I really do love gift knitting but like you not in December and adding that they’ll mostly be not in fingering weight! My gift recipients favorites are beanies, fingerless mitts and socks and I’ve made my list of who (7 immediate family members) and what/how many items for each. I’ve beefed up the DK, Sport and Worsted weights in my stash for this purpose as by far the most is fingering weight (I know I can use that held double but mostly not a fan of that process). Scrappy knitting means a lot of weaving in ends so I haven’t done much of that.

I like that you are thinking about interior design. Wouldn't it be nice to film in front of your yarn display board? It looks so beautiful! It would be so lovely to see it feature prominently. My goals are just to continue knitting garments that I can wear daily. I feel like I have been doing that in 2023 as well, so not a real change. I work with the elderly and I don't think it's very appropriate in my job to wear tank tops / revealing outfits, and I personally are not drawn to it either. So I don't understand the appeal really, as it seems most podcasters don't really wear them and they take so long to make. However, I absolutely adore summer knitting, namelijk shirts.

I just want to say how seen I feel with your list of goals. I too have been trying to be quite precise in my colour choice (specifically the seasons! lol), length of sweater discernment, resisting making summer knits because I KNOW I too will worry about sweating in them, and just in general more mindful of what I choose to make. It's so easy imo to not do these things because social media is full of yarn hauls and sped up knitting videos that are fun to watch but take away from the basis of what knitting is: making garments that are to be worn frequently. otherwise why have I spent hours and hours on them? on top of many of your goals, my main one is to keep trying new techniques and stay away from stockinette-only things for a while as I find them kind of tedious. thank you for this thorough reflection!

Knowing that helps when I am selecting both yarn and ready made clothing. I still occasionally wear navy and black!!

You could knit the LauraPenrose pillows and blanket during your summer knits for content.

I like your intentions as it really supports the ever growing and changing skills and tastes over the year. Being retired my knitting budget is not as generous as it was but I have plenty of stash to knit from. At the beginning of the year I pull out all of my stash of both yarns and patterns. I tentatively match yarns and patterns and put them away together. However, I totally know that I can change my mind when a pretty new pattern catches my eye.

I really love that dark blue sweater on you! Especially with the earrings it looks really chic :)

You could use your knitting book library as a backdrop. Two birds with one stone: interior design and books.

I am going to use the "use knitting books I own", as well as getting rid of ones I don't use. Thank you 😊

the only thing I want to achieve is patience to NOT buy a lot of yarn just because its on sale or its beautiful. I want to buy specific quantity for specific project only. This way I will spend more money on delivery and skip sales offers, but I will enjoy knitting instead of looking at my huge stash and feeling pressured to finish it. I dont have a 5 year stash, maybe 6 months stash.. but still. I dont like this feeling.
