Latin in highschool sparked my interest for languages and is the reason I speak German and live in Germany now :D

You should try Lingua Latina Per se Ilustrata, Pars I and II. This will introduce you to a lot of vocabulary, grammar and roman daily life with stories! Also, you should check out Comenius' Orbis Sensualium Pictus. This book was used for teaching little kids latin, but it's really effective. And you should also try all the resources that Evan der Millner has made available. You should check out his channel: /user/evan1965 this guy is crazy for latin and he has made available lots and lots of resources to learn it. I think he's the greatest latin enthusiast online, you should check out his website to.

latin learning amino called latin for beginners , you should read description before requesting to join , , is a good place to go as she has put all resources in one place , books work sheets , and more , i think shes done a fabulose job , but u would have to request joining as i dont think she wants anyone that is not serious on learning the lauguage latin. it is also a lvl system she has put in place .. and you wil need a journal for all your learning needs and , you will share what you are learning or have learnt once a month in a learning chat she will also put up . its realy cool it might not even be up yet as i know she told me she wants alot more posts and blogs up before she does it , so people can start joining knowing there is alot already there unlike some other communities that have nothing or leaders are not even active , its a shame as latin is becoming more popular now everyone who wants to learn latin , should look it up in amino communities , only the serious learners should join her amino , called Latin for beginners good luck guys

Love learning Latin -- My kids studied/are studying Latin in our classical homeschool tutorial, and I decided to learn along with them. After five years, we are diving into Caesar's and Cicero's writings. We are now officially in the weeds in grammar and really struggling with verbs, but I'm enjoying the challenge. I love history and language, so it's fun for me. My kids are not as sold out as I am. Thanks for the tips and encouragement!

Very good advice. I've studied french for years, now want to get down to the "real nitty gritty," linguistically speaking. Hence latin. À plus tôt!

Although Latin is yet to be put on my list of languages to learn (right now it's Koine Greek next and I just learned basic Ancient/Biblical Hebrew), at my seminary there is a saying (often used on crests and emblems) that is very common at divinity schools and seminaries everywhere across America and Europe: Soli Deo Gloria. Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel used it to sign some of their musical productions as well. It is most often translated as "Glory to God alone" or "To God alone be the glory" and I often use that as my sign-off in written theological discourses. So even Latin, if only a small amount, finds a regular use in my dialogue.

We used "verb cards" and "noun cards" in my Latin classes to aid in reading (two index cards with endings on them). I think it was really helpful, so I think you're on the right path. Also internet high five for the Latin vocab cards. I have a box, too, although they're made by a different company.

Maria, if there is anyone who could teach themself Latin it would be you. I'm still amazed at how you taught yourself German and them moved on to French. All the while I'm still stuck back at German. Gut gemacht! At an intellectual level I seriously admire everything you've done in your pursuit of language learning. And culturally and socially that's just totally awesome as well. Best wishes as you are learning Latin!

Hello! I've wanted to learn Latin for a while as well, and I even went through half or so of Wheelock's text during one summer in college before the new semester started up. I've forgotten it all in the intervening gazillion years, sadly. Although the past few months I've focused on German (which is how I found your channel, though I'm still a total newbie), I'm starting on what I'd call a modified Dowling method for learning Latin. For this I'm trying to learn all the declensions and regular verb conjugations before moving onto the textbook series Lingua Latina. This latter is an immersion-based method written in Latin from beginning to end, and its adherents claim that it's much more effective than the traditional approach. I kind of like grammar so we'll see. (The original Dowling method has you copying down declensions and conjugations over and over again for six months before moving onto Lingua Latina ... That's total overkill IMO, I'm using Memrise.) Anyway. Hope you have fun with Latin!

Hey Maria! At school I used to use the Cambridge Latin course which was focused on reading, translating and writing, but now we use lingua Latina per se illustrata, and it's great, you learn lain though immersion started with the verb to be, and it adds on from there with many stories. I don't know how far you are in now but it is a great book.

Oh Boy, this is so awesome. And super nerdy! I had 5 years of Latin in school, and I hardly remember anything at all. I think that is mostly because I am a lazyass. But also because in the beginning we learned vocabulary and grammar, and later we translated classical texts. That's all. I know it is a dead language, but I think if we tried to talk in Latin, (whether or not an ancient Roman could have understood us or not), having conversations, this would have been much better. I love the Romans aswell, their culture, the civilization they built....and I think somehow that it is strange. You see, even during the republican period, Rome has never really been a democracy (even when you take the inequality between men and women aside, no to speak of slavery...) and still....it is so fascinating, the architecture (pragmatical megalomaniacs), philosophy, science, arts....and what came afterwards? Fucking Christianity, and barbarians living in woodshacks inside the hulks of the Roman cities, like maggots feasting on a rotting carcass, forgeting how to read and argh....... Sorry for the rant :D Also, I don't think it is boring at all, looking up the original after reading/watching the translation. I do this aswell, but mostly when I think the translater fucked up somehow ;) Unfortunately I don't have any good recommendations for you. For vocabulary maybe "Der Kleine Stowasser", which we used in school. Having some quite...uncommon words and phrases, so that you can translate the graffito which where found in pompeii. Women writing about certain bodyparts of the gladiators, or why they are now not able to sit properly, after they visited them....you know what I mean^^ When you are a little bit advanced ( in 3 weeks or so, judging by how awesome you are (can you hear the envy^^)) i would recommend reading/translating "Cicero in Verrem" or "Orationes in Verrem" It is hilarious. At least if you imagine Verres' face during the speech, and ignore the fact that this was caused by the suffering of the sicillian people. Anyway. Good reads ;) So, have fun!

Hallo Maria Athena!

I like antique textbooks from the 50s and 60s for Latin, since contemporary teaching methods for foreign languages render most newer texts useless if you aren't studying in a classroom or with a tutor. For teaching yourself, old books are great (and since Latin is a "dead" language, it's not like it's going to have changed much since the 1960's).

Unfortunately, the old Romans left no sound recordings for us. So nobody knows how to pronounce it. We guess somehow like modern Italian... g = dsh, c =k , z = ts.

While you are right about the Romans leaving no sound recordings, much of the phonetics of Classical Latin can be reconstructed. There are comments made by grammarians on the sounds of the language and transcriptions of Roman names into Ancient Greek.
