How I'm Making 'The Lost Birds'

Join me as I compose and record a new work to memorialize the bird species that have been driven to extinction by humankind. 'The Lost Birds' will be a requiem--a musical elegy meant to celebrate the beauty of these extinct species. But it will also serve as a warning--just like the story of the canary in the coal mine, the fate that befell these birds is a foreshadowing of our own fate.
This album will feature vocal performances by one of the premiere vocal ensembles in the world, VOCES8, as well as my longtime collaborators, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
I'll be documenting in detail every aspect of the creative process: from composing, to recording, to mixing, to release--through updates, live streams, behind-the-scenes videos and more. It'll be an unprecedented all-access glimpse into the creative process as it unfolds, and you won't want to miss it.

Hi Chris! So fun to watch and truly melt-worthy to hear. Infinitely better than chocolate and stardust. My mind sees, from the beginning of the piece, a growing awareness and excitement that flirts with an emotion I can't yet name or understand, until the sudden bigness at 2:48 becomes the moment where all these individual sensations coalesce, and I experience a wordless understanding of the gestalt that is Glory and Awe in a world of powers larger than myself. I then hold my breath as if I can't quite believe it, and the payoff lands at 3:17. Like, yes, absolutely, you didn't imagine it, it's all real ... there may be no word for it, and that's probably the way it should be, but you've found what you never fully knew was there. (Just saying ... 'cause you asked about 2:48.)

Interesting that you are recording the vocals first and then going through the labor-intensive process of tempo mapping them. I guess there is no way around that if you want the music to breathe. Looking forward to further videos documenting the process :)

It’s a piece of mine called ‘Silver Wing’, that’s bird related, but ultimately didn’t work on the album, so was dropped.

All of this costs a great deal of money. Who funded your project? I have to fund all my projects straight out of pocket, so can't afford to record many of my works.
