Thank you, David? LOL! Not trying to be brave. It looked to me like the huge crack actually had a stopping point so I didn't feel it was too dangerous to try. I'm so glad you like it and took your time to tell me! Phil

I love the fact that you don't work with resins and putties to fill cracks and gaps, and appreciate the wood the way Nature has presented it to you. You inspire me to look at bits of wood with a very different eye! I have been binge-watching your channel for the last couple of days. New fan in the UK, thank you Phil!

Howdy Phil Wow it looks just like a piece I have .....really just like what I have .....One of my pieces a triangle blew off ! Glad it away from me at the time . I made a fixture on my band saw to round odd shapes , faster and safer . I have a small 1/4 hole in the center to use for any type of mounting . My plum is still little wet and when I cut a piece I can smell plum . I have only rough cut and sealed a few pieces . When I use carbide , I find that I draw it out from the center or the inside and use the left side of the tool it does not grab any were near as much and if it does it will flip the tool first before it grabs and stops the lathe . Well it works for me in this part of the country . lol The colors are just fantastic , I can hardly wait until my Plum is dry enough . I have some small pieces with three and four branches coming out of it they oughta look nice. I like the cracks too very much . Very rustic looking I do fill them sometimes if I going to use it for fluid .

"oh my screws are loose, but you always knew that" I actually carry several small screws in my wallet. ( left over from some long past project. I have too much fun with them to take them out) My screws aren't just loose sometimes I lose a few and need immediate replacements available to be able to keep functioning. lol. Humm carbide is not always better and I love my carbide tools. You can rotate them slowly sideways so less of the edge is cutting. Helps somewhat.

Hey Phil, that makes a very interesting bowl, cracks and all. The cracks do show a lot of character. I especially was surprised when you used sandpaper as a feeler gauge to sand out the debris very clever, yes indeedy. In your experience do you think the bark will stay there with the cracks, so far so good. It may be done moving by this time, I don't know how old you said the log is. The bark may be whats holding the thing together, hunnh? Great work. Thanks for sharing the adventure with us.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Don! I know a lot of folks have problems with the bark coming off, but honestly, in about five years of doing this never once has it been a problem. This plum was cut early last spring. I know that bark will stay on if the tree was cut during the dormant season and this would have been the end of that. Phil

Phil I loved everything about this bowl. Starting with the wonderful color and grain in the plum. And those open cracks really make it shine. I think they are the best part of the bowl. Really liking the Howard finish. I am using it more and more. As a matter of fact I used it on one of my acoustic guitars yesterday. This one has a cedar top with more of an oil finish instead of lacquer. The Howard finish really brought it back to looking like new. Been curious about what angle you have your negative rake scraper ground at. Sure cuts nice! Strange how you just uploaded a heavily cracked bowl. I have been working on 2 bowls this week and just finished and uploaded what is was worst looking piece of wood I have ever turned. Saying cracked is being nice to this one.It was scary! It loads Friday morning. Thanks for the inspiration and the great ideas. Gary

I'm so glad you like it, Gary! I too love the cracks and the Howard finish. It sure makes things easy and fast! I didn't know you make guitars! Or, are you saying you just brought back the finish? That is good to know, that it will brighten dull finishes. Hahaha... The angle of my negative rake scaper. It's odd angles, for sure. I just ground one side until it looked right and did the same with the other side. I do have the angles written down so I can duplicate when I regrind, but I couldn't tell you what they are. I just know it has to be less than 90 degrees included angle. Looking forward to your next video. Scary keeps the heart pumping! Phil

Phil for years I have threatened to build a guitar but just haven't. I just play them and collect them. Not sure if i want to admit how many I have but I don't think you can count them on both hands. Dang I just had to take a shoe off to finish counting hahaha! That's not counting the ones I have given to my daughter and one of my grandsons. Guitars are like bowl gouges....you can't have enough! I wold LOVE to be able to play a guitar, Gary! I've dabbled with the piano but no talent there, either. Sounds like quite the collection! Phil

Couldn't believe nobody beat me to the punch bowl with a wise crack about how plum crazy good this turning is, but I was wrong. Naturally it was someone with a name like Wa(y)ne Leaf the natural wonder. Way to go Wayne. And Phil fopr anonther gretaproject. Oops lost a few more screws, oh well.

Hahaha... You are going to start falling apart with all those loose screws, Tim! Phil

Hi Phil, Outstanding job and bowl! I'm glad you faced the challenge of turning this piece with all the big,and small, cracks cuz it turned out great! It's not easy to turn a piece like this! I like all the cracks as it adds to the natural look of the piece! I have a suggestion if I may,,,, I noticed that you're using a left hand brush to apply the feed and wax???Is this a special technique that you've developed? LOL Thanks for the video! Tom

Thank you very much, Tom! I'm really glad you like it! I'll have to watch the video. Not too sure about the left hand brush, comment? But, yeah, I have a supply of both left hand, right hand and the ever elusive ambidextrous brushes! LOL! Phil

Phil are you ready to try a making winged box?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop6 жыл бұрын
Ya know, GI, I love boxes and I love turning. What I don't love is taking the time to make things fit together. One of the reasons I've just about stopped my 50 years of woodworking and switched to woodturning. I just don't have the patience for it. But, I may give it a try when I've satisfied my desire for instant gratification. Phil

She turned out beautiful, Phil! Nice pierced natural edge bowl! Oh, wait, you didn't pierce it. You cheated and let nature do it. ;-) You had me laughing several times in the first half of the vid. But you often do. That plum is really pretty! Billy

Should I ask this question? I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t. What do you think. Oh well. Why do you sand the bark? I never have but maybe I should.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop6 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's not necessary, Joe. I just never know who might be handling the piece and I don't want someone to get scratched or cut or catch their clothes. Plus I like the idea that it's cleaner after I sand it. Just preference, I guess. Thank you for watching and commenting! Phil
