Phil ... I haven't read all 90+ comments, so someone else may have already suggested this. Before you fill cracks with CA, apply a thin coat of shellac on the workpiece, being careful not to flood the crack. When the shellac is dry, break out the CA. When the CA is dry, break out the sheer scraper or sandpaper. The idea is that the shellac seals the wood enough to keep the CA from blooming out into the surrounding grain.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
That's good advice, Gerald. Truth be told, I really don't like to fill cracks. If nature put it there it's good enough for me. Just thought I would try this since it was brown but no luck. Phil

Turned out really nice. I like the contrast with the bark also. Others have mention protecting the surrounding area, I dip a finger tip in shellac and apply it around the crack to be filled. Dries in just a couple of minutes. Also, CA glue is anaerobic meaning it cures from lack of air. If left open it takes a long long time for it to finally film over and cure. You many want to test the spray on several types of wood as I have never had it change the color of the wood.

I'm kicking myself for not having a picture of the large pile of logs I found **in the street** not very far from home. That was in '15. I had to leave 9/10s of them and took only the few that were small enough for my wife and me to lift into the pickup. The trees grew down near the Columbia River on an abandoned property which was being cleared for development. The log this chunk came from was oval in cross section, 5 feet long, 28 inches across the long oval and was cut from one end of that oval, just at the pith line. I have more!

Sweet! Mrs DAsh says: "Beautiful! That turned out gorgeous!" So, two thumbs up! My apologies about the cracks; that's one of the drawbacks to this otherwise wonderful wood. It grows in lobes for some reason, and does tend to deep cracks which do not show up in the raw chunk. But so what? Some character just adds to the beautiful wild live edge. Well turned! Oh . . . addendum: did the ironwood show up?

Starbond brown is my favorite glue now. When you use it, wipe the surface clean when you apply it. Since it is colored, the staining will be more evident on light colored wood. To reduce staining, either blue tape on either side, or edge with shellac. Try it again on darker wood. And the “Feed and Wax” finish is not “cheap”, but “inexpensive”😈. Looking good, as usual!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I wish it would have worked out for me, Valerie, but it didn't fill the crack and it wasn't brown. A complete waste of my time. Point taken about the Feed & Wax! Phil

madronawoodworks Give it another try on a more appropriate piece of wood. You would have had the same problem with reg. C.A. except for the dye difference. For this piece, thick would probably filled the cracks better, given how deep they were.

That is one of the nicest natural edge shapes I have seen. When I saw the blank before you put it in the lathe I just loved the outside shape of the log. And you captured all that shape in the bowl. Even with clear CA it can change the finish near the crack. I was going to say to seal that area which I have heard others talk about. But I see others already mentioned it. So I will refrain from saying it. Oh dang to late LOL. I cant really say that it works 100% because it still seems to take extra sanding. Anyway that was a great turn and turned out nice. Gary

Hi Phil, The contrast between the bark and wood make this a very beautiful bowl! Maybe some fine sawdust with the brown CA would have worked better? Thanks for the video,,, Tom
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Tom, the bark really makes this piece. You are right, again, sawdust would have helped but I just really prefer not to fill cracks, at all. I only did it because I had the samples. Thanks for taking your time to watch and comment, Tom, I really appreciate it! Phil

Beautiful piece Phil I love hawthorn not had a chance to turn a piece yet, it's plentiful where I leave but not really big enough to turn bowls. Re the super glue stain it's something I struggle with, over here most put a sanding sealer coat on before using the super glue to stop stains, something which I don't see American turns do, but don't get stainage either I don't use starbond though. Take care, Mike

Will I think, I'll try my woodwarm scerw, after watching you for some time now use yours. I find if you put a little of your final finish on before you put on the glue that it dosen't stain as bad, just saying.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you'll try it, Judith. A lot of folks have a fear of them. I can tell you, on some pieces, it takes all of my strength, non-slip gloves and a prayer to get piece off when using it. Most important is to have a flat surface for your chuck jaws to set against. You'll like it! Yes, I've heard about applying finish before the glue. Problem is, I don't always know what that finish is going to be until I see the fully turned and sanded piece! 😊

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop4 жыл бұрын
It's the 1 1/2" round nose scraper by Benjamin's Best from Penn State Industries. I modified it by making it a negative rake, 36° on both top and bottom. Works great!

I have had that happen to my bowls. I guess you have to seal the wood before you use the ca glue to keep it from staining. Good luck next time!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Yes, sealing first can help, Donna. I guess I just don't like filling cracks unless needed for structural integrity. Thank you! Phil

Well the final piece was anything but crap Phil. Most if not all brands of CA glue that I’ve tried/use leave a stain until I tried wiping on some Danish Oil on the surrounding wood before applying the adhesive. I found that definitely helps stop the CA from bonding to the areas that I don’t want it to. That was a nice gesture by Star bond whose products have great ratings. In the case of us wood turners we tend to use such adhesives to fill in gaps, perhaps missing the point that they are primarily meant to glue surfaces together (I add some very fine dust shavings to fill the gap/s & apply CA as a means to add strength and create a tight filled gap rather than just expect it to fill a void. Glad it turned out well in the end & was surprised to find that you are multilingual (speak “French”) as do many of us turners !! Lol 😆. Lovely piece of Hawthorn lives another day but as a very pleasing bowl that would look great in any situation. Always enjoy your projects and my best regards to you from a sunshine and showers English Spring. Your friend, Geof
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Geof, sealing first definitely helps. I just don't like filling cracks, at all, so probably didn't put as much effort into it as I could. I've used fine dust along with the CA before, but still don't like the outcome. For me it always ends up looking like a filled crack! LOL! Yes, French is my second language! Hahaha... Thank you so much, Geof, for your great comment! Enjoy the Spring! Phil

If u hold the accelerator about 6 or 8" away and do a quick light mist it will not mess with wood

Typical Shady Acres beauty! Looks like you are setting new (RPM) speed records now. I am emboldened by your work to try and take my turning to the next pulley! Questions: 1. Do you use all the grits (80-320) on your Sandoflex when sanding bark, or just one grit? Or is it dependent upon the bark? 2. What angle do you sharpen your round nose scraper sides to--are they the same on both sides? Do you use a sharpening jig like the Wolverine? Thanks in advance, I always enjoy your replies and advice.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Louis! I guess I do seem to be turning at higher speeds, lately. I guess my recent pieces have been more in balance, not sure why. I do like it because it takes less effort to get the chisel through the wood. When sanding bark I almost always use just one grit, 180. Sometimes if the bark is really coarse, I might use 120 and then 180 but I don't go any finer. HA! The angle of my negative rake scraper is a puzzle. All I did, the first time I made that second bevel, was eyeball it. I'm probably going to regrind so that both angles are the same, likely 40 degrees. As it is now, I keep sharpening the wrong side when I want to bring up a new edge and it's a pain! LOL! I do use a Wolverine jig and highly recommend it. It's a real work saver and steel saver as it only takes one, light pass to get back to a sharp edge. Phil

Howdy Phil Had to comment at beginning of video , yes a very lite wood , I said " When Phil puts that feed and wax on it will come alive " have you ever mixed a little sawdust with the CA glue or Elmer's Glue ? I have with larger cracks , . Have to do it a few times sometimes . To reduce any staining don't fill the crack up all the way and do it sooner so when you finish turn any stain is all gone and you are at the level of the glue . The piece you cut off , that will be a beautiful plate . maybe you could place it under this bowl . When you use a acid brush with feed and wax......do you clean it afterwards if so what do you use ? that feed and wax made the grain look nice ,
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Howdy Bruce! I have used sawdust and both CA and carpenters glue, but I really just don't like filling cracks unless it's for a structural issue. I only did it this time because they provided the brown CA so thought I'd give it a try. I like the idea of using the cutoff under this piece, cool! I don't clean the acid brush except to wipe it with the same cloth I applied the wax with. Then, I put both of them in a ziplock bag and they are good to go, next time. I've probably used that same cloth and brush on at least a dozen pieces. Thanks for taking your time to watch and comment, buddy! Phil

Nice work Phil. Lost the "Crap" count but it did bring a smile to my face. Turned out good in the end. Is Hawthorn the same as Blackthorn? I can't wait to get to my Raintree stock. Thanks for sharing. JC from Thailand.

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I used to write the year on all my pieces, Kathy. Then I read someone say that when he sells his stuff at craft shows, people notice the year and if it's older than one year they think since no one else bought it there must be something wrong with it. Now, I've never sold any of my stuff but if I decide to, that comment made sense. But I agree, I would prefer the year be on there. Thanks! Phil

This is one place where I have had some luck with CA - run a line along the bark/wood joint both inside and out before final shaping, and always work outward from wood to bark, never the other way.

The tree has to be cut while dormant, usually than means Winter time, John. I've been fairly lucky with most of mine, but yeah, lots of times it does just come off and there's nothing you can do about it. Thanks for your comment! Phil
