Just a small project for most turners. For me, a major undertaking because I'm still learning to turn spindles. But, it was fun and turned out pretty much like I wanted it to.

Happy Birthday, old friend!! Welcome to the 71 Club!I hit 71 in April myself and I used to be a widower also. Wasn’t one long, for God led me to a wonderful woman to finish out my life with!! She a couple of years younger and we practically grew up together but I never knew her at all! God is great! Try using your Skew on some of these Spindle projects- it is very versatile but does take some practice!!!

Even though I gave you a thumbs up and will subscribe, there's one thing that I don't like about you, Phil. You're younger than me, so stop crabbing about 71 being old. What a pleasure it was to watch this video since you really didn't know what you were going to do. I was able to hear you plan and then second guess what you decided to do. This made me relate to turning more than any other video that I've seen. Your modesty is pleasurable and makes turning much more interesting. So hang in there Phil. You may actually make it to 72 and then you'll be really old.

I love how this turned out, Phil! You had me laughing a couple of times because I'm still pretty new at this woodturning and tried to make my first snowman a few weeks ago. I had a devil of a time trying to make it more round, really didn't know what I was doing. Trying to decide which tool was best and don't have that many yet..this part needed to be wider, this part needed to be thinner, etc. At one point I was feeling pretty good about it when a piece came flying off the "hat" and mangled it. Ole Frosty has a very floppy hat this year. LOL. But, having fun. That's the most important thing. Love all your videos. (Belated Happy Birthday!🎉)

Always a pleasure to watch you turn Phil. I'm similar and I usually let the blank decide what develops. Detail spindle gouges take a lot of getting used to. I prefer to use small bowl gouges and a diamond radius type carbide cutter for detailed turning.

Awesome, the bottom dark cracked part was a knot from a limb. Have you tried getting a used, pre-owned 3/8 & 1/2” old-school Continental spindle gouges. We learned on these in school in the 50s through 1970s, they seem to be less grabby not as aggressive and heavy as the new ones sold today. Wonderful job, thanks Phil🎉

Maybe you do not feel like 'a spindle turning kind of guy' but I think you do yourself a little bit of a disservice. It is a well constructed piece & I think that the body of the vase & the more 'colourful' base compliment each other well. Have you considered a finer parting for such occasions as final cutting off of the base on this piece? Just a thought from Australia.

Phil, you should know by now that you do not know what object is hiding in a piece of wood till you bring it out. Hope you had a wonderful birthday, and may all your surprises this year be pleasant ones.. Blessings.

Belated Happy Birthday Phil. On the positive side according to the song ...... "you're too old to die young now" Lovely piece. I'm just now starting to make longer hollow forms and have bought a set of shark jaws to facilitate a stronger tenon.

I have a lot of sycamore pieces and I found it extremely hard. it is very tough to cut on the band saw, even with a new blade. It also takes a long time to turn. it makes great turned pieces when it is over, but it takes a very long time to get it turned. Be aware when starting. Manzanita is another interesting wood to turn.

Happy late birthday I like your design I like to make my vases with a 2-inch hole so I can use goblets I found at Hobby Lobby so I can use live flowers inside. When I get stuck designing I ask my for ideas we have fun creating together just an idea

Nice one Phil! I’m not much of a spindle turner, but recently my son and I started to make beer steins and whiskey glasses. I turn the main body and he creates iron bands and handles for them in his blacksmithing shop. We are still at that “what if we” stage of making things work. Once we get one to a finished stein (mug) I’ll try to get a picture to you. Oh! by the way we are approximately the same age. My birthday is the end of October. I turned 74. Cheers, Rick

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Yes you are so right. I get a real thrill working with my son. He took up blacksmithing as a hobby a few years ago, and some of his stuff is amazing. Last weekend he made me a hollowing tool and I put the handle on it. Great fun!

Phil, it was nice to see a face to go with what has heretofore(you like that word, I get it from listening to a lot of lawyers talk about the progress of various Second Amendment court cases) been a disembodied voice. I don't know if you see the new comments on these older postings, but I hope so. Plain wood or not, the piece had very nice things to say about it's author. See you around the chip pile.

Wood turning is like what Forest Gump says about a box of chocolates since you never know what you’re gonna get. You kept pushing though and turned a nice vase. Perhaps you made some mistakes according to your narrative, but that’s how you learn. If you don’t make mistakes, you’re not doing anything. Keep those shavings flying. Nice video and commentary. Thanks! Happy belated birthday!!!!!!

OK. Thanks Phil. Just wanted you to know myself and my wife watch alot of your videos. We are fairly new to wood turning and are picking up alot of good stuff from your vids. I've created a turning monster in my wife, Lori. She is loving it and I have to say you have been a great inspiration. So much so we are considering a new Jet lathe, if possible the model you have. We are just trying to get the best deal we can (we are not rich). So thank you again. Keep those videos coming. Really enjoy them. John and Lori.

Wow, great comment, John! I can't imagine anything much better than a husband/wife turning team. Loads of fun and great conversations. I'm so glad to hear this! I understand about getting the best deal possible. I just won't buy until I can which is why I haven't replaced my bandsaw, yet! Good thing I'm patient. And cheap! LOL! Phil
