Update Oct-4-2023: the game now runs on modded DSi/3DS systems with twilight menu! Be sure to download the latest release (v1.0.3)!!! why was it not working, you ask? I was trying to make a DSi rumble. DSi's can't rumble. so it exploded the system. that has now been fixed. Enjoy!

I've tried playing both versions but when I seem to get to an ending, it just...stays on a black screen. on my 3DS it's just black screen at the end of the day. so I replayed it on my dsi, got the explosives, and got a cutscene before making one last batch. barely made it but then black screen.

@@Elixir_Alex yeah, apologies - this seems to be a bug. i'll try and fix it when I can! In the meantime you can get the ending by going to Start Game -> then holding SELECT, R, and tapping Story Mode. Then you can start a Custom Cook on Day 6 ("The Final Cook")!

Edit: Unfortunately I'm not seeing the "custom cook" option. it's just starting me on that last batch that I was already at before. and if I load it on melonds and try it, it just starts the first day. though since R and select are D and ' in that set up, it could be an issue of ghosting.

GREAT video. I am trying to get into DS development and it's been a pain ... not because of the code itself but gluing together all the community tools. I spent the other day trying to get devkit pro setup and some other DS tool chains (BlockDS etc). For what these people have in talent they lack in organization lol. I was able to get everything dockerized so that hopefully in the future normal people who just want to greenfield some homebrew can get right into it without sifting through a deluge of outdated GBAtemp posts etc. Not a fault of the community but, as you mentioned, a fault of the now mostly useless SEARCH ENGINES. A video like this is so important for moving things forward. And, well, OF COURSE an impressive feat as well ;) Great work!

agreed 100%. Thankfully the one thing that is fairly well organized are the docker containers. DevKitPro has a very nice docker image ready to roll. If you're using VSCode, the dev-containers feature is very handy for working with this - I have a dev container json config which spins up a DevKitArm development environment with LibNDS, Nitro-Engine & NightFoxLib. Feel free to use, it's in the .devcontainers section of the repo.

The progression of labs on the show could also be used in this game as a sort of natural difficulty curve. The easy cooks are in the small, simple rv lab, then the harder cooks would be in the larger, more advanced lab, and finally the hardest levels are the ever changing and complex operations of the home labs

This is great! I really love that it's a cooking mama clone since a lot of licensed games back then were either that or some form of cheap party games collection, so it's authentic. Also, I don't know if this would fit memory-wise, but if this were a full game, I'd imagine you would have different stages that vary in complexity as the game progresses. like you start out in the RV obviously, where you have one work station, then move on to the Superlab, and maybe then you get the Vamanos lab, where maybe the layout changes every time since it's always different houses you are cooking in. Oh, and I could see a bonus minigame where you play as Gus in the Los Polos Hermanos kitchen, cooking food, bringing the Cooking Mama inspiration full circle.

I like reading into reverse engineering stuff even if I am still quite limited into understanding that kind of stuff (no programming experience, fumblimg in HTML and CSS, relying a lot on tools for years with persistence) as I enjoy datamining games of different consoles, and I've also talked with folks that made Python scripts and C# tools for tricky DS formats in a somewhat vain attempt to document how to datamine games but in a digestible form. This made me again be sure of how limited my knowledge is. What a wonderful video! I am fortunate enough to see a hokebrew game documented in this capacity in 2023, and with 3D graphics, no less! The trick with the lower torso of the 2D sprite reminded me how in Another Code /Trace Memory, the characters have a gap behind the text box, making their sprites look awkward when ripped, and this helped me understand the why. The company that developed that game would later on rely mostly on the 3D engine for their next titles (Kyle Hyde Saga), which made this issue irrelevant. Nice music choice btw ;)
