"Once you free your mind about a concept of harmony and of music being correct you can do whatever you want" one of my favorite quotes from an Italian Composer Giorgio Moroder. Found in a Daft Punk song. Just a reminder that music theory is great, but you don't have to be bogged down by it.

10:00 That 2-5-1 is actually a 2-4-1. still has the same effect and those chords are truly something to be proud of! I really like them!! This really proves to people that you don't need advanced music theory to make good sounding chords (but ofcourse it can help). I find music theory more useful for communicating musical ideas.
@pastifier93492 жыл бұрын
Thank fuck, I wasn't actually imagining it lmfao. 5 to 1 is a pretty strong resolution, and it didn't sound like that at all, but I couldn't really check the chords cuz my internet is acting up and I'm forced to watch this in 144p LOL. Either way, isn't it just charming and extremely impressive how someone with basic music theory can make something so fun and catchy like this??? I'm very happy there aren't any music theory gatekeepers in this comment section, thank fuck... People genuinely don't NEED music theory to make amazing stuff, it's really just a convenient thing to have, not at all necessary lmao

@@pastifier9349 Agreed! I love music theory and I've studied it for a few years now, but I absolutely love to watch this and see someone's perspective of not having grown up a musician. @nomadfc43422 жыл бұрын
its absolutely a 2 5 1 it's just that the F9 chord is implied ex: ii = C Eb G = cm which is the root third and 5 respectively V = Eb G A = F9 rootless voicing, being the b7 9th and third respectively I = Bb D F A = Bbmaj7 this is often used in jazz harmony, interesting stuff.
@defflermusic2 жыл бұрын
Uhm... That is actually a 2-5-1 as the bass is playing the root (F) which makes the 4 chord into a F9 (V of Bb)

Honestly this is great. Throughout the video you were talking about how some of your decisions were similar to the subject matter, freeform for example. This is the thing about music theory, it's not really a set of rules to follow, if it was everything would be generally the same, it's a set of tools for helping understand why things sound like they do any for communicating ideas between people. Your method of doing what sounds right, and considering the subject matter's character is honestly what many do in practice. You don't need good music theory understanding to be able to make interesting music, it's a nice tool to have, especially when analyzing music, but by no means is it required and some people get so absorbed into theory that they never learn to break it. I find it great that you're doing this by feel, in the future if/when you learn more music theory, it'll be as an additional knowledge set, rather than being a crutch you rely on, some people become so entrenched in the theory that they don't experiment or feel through their music anymore.

I love these music videos, they’re so fun. Also, the “chord numbers” that you are talking about (at about 9:25) are called scale degrees, they just have a corresponding number to relate to instruments in different keys. So on a Bb major scale, C instruments start on Bb (their one) and Bb instruments start on C (their 1) and so on. Pretty sure it’s just a more universal way to refer to the notes on a scale. I’m not a music major, just a band kid who tries to understand theory so I hope this helped.
