I admit, I've made a few garments and I never gauge either. I just try the garment on every few rows to make sure it still fits and if it doesn't, I adjust the stitch count 😂

Another plus-sized crocheter here… One thing I am really trying to be more disciplined about is wet blocking my gauge swatch and letting it dry before measuring it. Courtney Clarke had a great point in one of her videos that we will eventually need to wash any garment we make and so we should to treat the swatch the same way we plan to launder it. Looking back on some of my sweater fit mishaps, I think it’s because I met gauge without blocking, then the sweater stretched during blocking, making it too large.

I love MJ patterns. Made about 5 sweaters. As for ribbing- I find it always a little loose so I would do a row of single crochet skipping stitch here and there to tighten it up. Also, I never make a gauge swatch if I follow MJs pattern, I find her measurements to be true to size

You give us some wonderful tips and tutorials, so let me help you out. I have been breeding, training and showing dogs for over 15+ years. Unfortunately, due to my health, I have had to stop it all, but I do still help others with dog training tips and behavioral issues. One of my girls who came from my last breeding of 11 years ago, is extremely hyper sensitive to bad weather to the point of I having to get medication to calm her down. Plus, I got her a Thundershirt which really calms her down. So between the Thundershirt and the medication, she can get through the storms.

I have ALWAYS wanted to learn to crochet. My grandmother tried to teach me as a pre-teen, but as you can guess, the attention span just didn’t allow that to happen. Fast forward to now, I purchased an afghan kit club membership (y’all know which one, I am 100% positive it is in your SM feed SOMEWHERE 😂) I was ready to quit with block 1 because I felt the instructions were not easy enough for an absolute beginner and I was horribly frustrated. Then I looked up how to single crotchet on YT, and there you were! Easily walking me through step by step and creating the confidence I needed to keep going! So thank you!

Also about gauge swatching, idk if you mention it later but always measure pre-washing and post washing. Nothing more frustrating than taking time to make a swatch, knit the perfect garment and then see it grow x10 after washing.
