Hi Helen, you should put in a wire reinforcement inside the pipe with tne bottom ends bent into the base bowl, also cut the pipe into 2 halves then taped together, also oil the part of the pipe that is inserted into the base, will work out great ❤but you must not place the pipe at the very bottom of the bowl base as it will not have any adhesive effect if cement mixture in pipe is not in contact with the one in the base bowl

I am a big bird and nature lover too. When you pour a column as that, it would benefit you to include rod iron down the center to help strengthen and it might have held as you were taking the pvc away. Looks great and I am pleased to see another elderly DIY. Projects give so much satisfaction.
