IMO everything has changed. Call it what you want: DJ, Producer, etc. If you're playing live, it's really just one (or more) person/people making the songs, mixing them, recording them, playing them, playing them live, etc. It's the trend since so many people have affordable access to music making technology/equipment nowadays. Plus it's just cooler when that happens haha. It allows you to let all your focus and enjoyment land on the person who did everything start to finish on a song.
