This is the preliminary instalment in a series of videos where I explain some of the thinking and methods behind the engineering design process. In episode 0, I cover the design of the Love Conveyor- a machine that is a little too complicated for it's simple function; dispensing candy. (You can download and print your own Love conveyor here: jbvcreative.com/products/the-...)
In this video, I talk about some of the considerations when designing a mechanical system specifically to be 3d printed. I then dive into the details of how I broke down this design problem into its parts and tackled them one by one. Some of the design choices were functional, and some were aesthetic. This is one of my favourite pieces I have made so far!
Although I don't get into the specifics and the math behind gear selection (maybe something for an upcoming video) I do provide a basis for how to begin thinking about a mechanical design project. I hope you can learn something from this video!
If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below and I will get back to you right away.
My last video outlining the build process for the Love Conveyor:
• 3D Print Your Own WILD...
If you want to add gears to your project but you don't know where to find them, I have a full gear library available here:
jbvcreative.com/collections/s...
If don't have a 3D Printer, the Love Conveyor can be purchased as a kit or fully assembled here:
jbvcreative.com/collections/a...

The filament for this project was provided by Digitmakers - A great company, run by great people, who know the 3D Printing industry very well. I cannot recommend them enough. Check em out here:

Yo! I love this! You're the only mechanical designer I've seen on yt use Solidworks rather than fusion, so I'd love to see how you built this in CAD. I'd love to see you going through your thought process and highlighting your design philosophy

Probably because Fusion is affordable compared to the prohibitively expensive SOLIDWORKS license that keeps pretty much anyone outside of corporate industry away. I wish it weren't so because I liked SOLIDWORKS... I miss having a license...

New subscriber, loving the content. Even though I have been doing this for many decades, I have next to my CAD station a large bank of desktop drawers where I keep lots of various mechanisms to spark my innovation. Having something tangible in your hand does wonders for the process. Best of luck!

Thanks Paul! Maybe I’ll get more into the CAD down the road- I use Solidworks but CAD methodologies are the same regardless.
