Daughter does not eat meat but loves a bolognaise. Have switched out the mince for savoury soya mince from H&B. 250g bag will make 5 batches, each batch will make 6 meals. So much cheaper than mince and higher on protein another benefit is; it's dry, so much easier to store.

Very well said Lizzy, an excellent video. I have always saved leftover odds and sods like a tablespoon of baked beans, peas, bolognese sauce etc or a sprinkling of cheese and used as toppings for jacket potatoes for a tasty filling meal. One hard-boiled egg in a white sauce is tasty over rice or pota5o too.

Where I live in America, you could get mackerel for $1.25 for a 10-ounce can. I noticed lately the cans shrunk to 7 ounces each though! Tinned meat is still relatively cheaper here although nowhere near as cheap as it was. Ounce for ounce the cheapest is eggs for actual meat or tofu. I can get a pound of tofu for about $1 when it is on sale. Usually, it is only in specialty shops or some sections of the Walmart because few people eat it locally. So when it is about to go out of date, I purchase it all on sale and freeze.

You would think the winter squash is cheap right now. Swede, butternut, acorn, delicata. You can cut them in half and take out the guts and fill them with all sorts of things. One half can make a meal.My fav is stuffed acorn. I stuff it with fried onions and pepper ground meat, (i use turkey) and i cut up a small apple i dice for a little sweetness. The world is open to what you stuff it with . My husband likes his stuffed with spaghetti and hambugar sauce.

Hi lizzy; I spend approx £100 per week on shopping for 4 adults, that’s not just food, that’s toiletries and cleaning stuff. I think that’s pretty good. I mainly cook from scratch which I enjoy. I shop the sales, oops counter and occasionally get a 2g2g. I don’t have to do this as we all work and contribute to the household but coming from a large family I pride myself on being frugal and we don’t waste a thing. I hope my frugal habits brush off onto my kids because as you know things are just getting tighter and tighter. Keep doing what you’re doing Lizzy, I love your channel. Xxx

Home Bargains had a big bag of red lentils for £2.49 this week - can’t recall the size exactly but I’d say at least 2kg. Considering they were charging over a pound for 500g at one point that’s not a bad deal. They also had split peas and other pulses, too. Also, have you tried pearl barley to bulk out mince? It’s still relatively cheap and it takes on the texture of mince when cooked with it in gravy or sauce - might be worth trying. Do you use the whey from your strained yogurt? Good for baking but it also adds protein to sauces such as cheese sauce or even bolognaise, or you can add it to mashed veg such as potato or swede, or to your pancakes instead of milk. When your son is tired of jacket potatoes you can scoop out the middle and mash it up, maybe add some cheese or anything else he likes, and just brown under the grill - tastes completely different to a jacket, even though it’s exactly the same thing.

We never meal plan, I've tried and it doesn't work for us. I buy what we need and what is a good price and then my husband shops our pantry cabinet and he cooks from what is available. So I totally agree with you, get what is a good deal from the stores and then you can make your meals from that. Let's be honest sometimes you wouldn't want what's on the meal plan if done too far in advance. I watch the price per lb. as sometimes you get a better deal on loose than bagged produce. Our local grocery is doing fewer and fewer great deals on their sales/ads. As a vegan couple we try really hard not to buy processed food but Friday is our splurge day for a frozen veggie burger or something but it does cost so much more. We are eating lots of apples, sweet potatoes, kale and oranges at the moment in season. I just wish our store would have better prices. Great video as always!

Great video, you explain things really well. I do the same, see what's cheap then figure out what I can do with it. I see it as a creative challenge. Did you ever see the tv programme 'Ready Steady Cook'? That's where we're at! Do you make your own stock with chicken bones? People spend a fortune on bone broth, when we had a local butcher, I used to get a bag of bones for free and make my own in the pressure cooker. Great for soup or stews. Another use for peanut butter is instead of tahini to make cheap humous with a tin of chickpeas. You can then use the chick pea water in baking. Everything has a use!

From Canada my kids loved this potato soup recipe, Special Potato Soup: 2-3 tbsp butter, 1 large onion sliced/chopped, 1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots (optional), 1/2 cup diced celery (optional), 1 garlic clove minced, 4 cups diced potatoes, 2-3 cups chicken stock, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, 1 tsp parsley flakes, 1 cup milk. Put first 5 ingredients into large saucepan, sauté until onion soft and clear. Add potatoes, chicken stock, salt, pepper, bring to boil then turn down and simmer until vegetables cooked, approximately 10-15 minutes. Add milk and parsley, let sit for 5 minutes…then I take potato masher and mash all down a bit and serve…😊
