The whole "sit down and talk about premise and group themes" happened to my group by accident, we knew we were jumping into a more grimdark kinda setting and most of us already had a general idea of our separate themes and goals, my character was gonna be a Phantom Rogue, the Cleric was gonna be a more combat focused Life Cleric, the Bard was gonna be a Sword Bard, and the Bloodhunter was leaning towards Mutant. The "session 0" wound up being a 3-5 session long prologue arc for our characters in their childhoods to literally "build them as people" it was a lot of fun, by the end of it our characters had an extremely traumatic childhood and we all wound up naturally being death related subclasses. Phantom Rogue who "followed" the goddess of survival (not in a truly religious sense but in a "I can relate to the concept of this God so I'm vibing with it"), a Death Cleric who is losing faith in the gods as a whole, a Ghostslayer Bloodhunter, and a Spirits Bard.

My process is that I usually listen to the campaign premise and the player’s premise (those that have a rough idea at least) and then think about which of the subclasses or races that currently is of interest of me. That’s when I pick a race and subclass combo (or several subclass combos) and roll my dice. Depending on what I get I then start forming the character around the information I learned at the start, usually filling both a social and mechanical roll pretty well. I slowly build up justifications for each of my mechanical reasons and how they would be flavored for the slowly building theme of the character. I then choose a background that best suits the mostly built concept after discussions with the dm on this. Of course, this is for when I join a campaign from the start. If I join a game already in progress, I work far more with what is established and keep in mind the possible interests of each of the players’ characters. One of my recent ones I’m proud of is an earth genasi swarmkeeper ranger I introduced. First, I main a ton of rangers, it’s pretty well established and I’m quite skilled with their combat role, spells, and just general mechanics. I had actually been looking for an excuse to use one. Except…I couldn’t figure out how to flavor a swarm. I knew I didn’t really want bugs was about it. After having the dm tell me some about the history in the world and the rough of each of patty’s backstory, and how much each has had a chance to explore that, I finally got inspiration though. Souls. The party needed, socially, someone who provided guidance but not consistent and constant guidance, just a gentle hand (bunch of under 18 boys who are slowly reforming murderhobos who realized they were wanting to take the game seriously for once). Souls also would be perfect because one of the characters needed an excuse to return to his old home that he had been running from which had been the location of a mass attack and genocide. So I made my character’s entry point a hidden and forgotten temple where fragmentary souls who had a difficult time moving on would gather. They kinda had a traditional will o the wisp feel to them (think, the movie brave) design but also a bit more firefly in design. Ok but what to make my character? That’s when I realized that I had placed her entry point to the campaign in a temple. Temples have tons of statues. What better guardian for such a place than one of those statues. I could have probably gone with a construct like warforged or autognome but instead opted to lean elemental. So she was an earth genasi, brought to life by the combined will and power of these gathered fragmentary souls and whom guarded and looked after the souls in return. Her goal? Help those souls move on, usually by fulfilling their wishes and unfinished business. And as for how she moves the party? Well that huge genocide had her note that a large influx of souls to her temple, many crying out for her to return there and check on a sacred item that was stored there. But a few, a few would want her to wait just a moment. Why? They were the family members of that one character and wanted my character to check on him and make sure he was safe and sound. So that was that, a fully built character with social and mechanical niche filled and a gentle guiding hand for the entire party and an excuse for the dm to help hint at important story lore. Also a character for the party to feel like they were guiding in return (kinda isolated character so she knew little beyond her temple and what the souls informed her of, so lots of gaps that made the group fond of her immediately). So yeah, the souls lured the party to the temple via the will of the wisps style like in Brave (a very good lure the dm and I knew would hook the players immediately because shiny glowy object is their weakness) and from there it was done. Sorry for the length. Just wanted to articulate my process. It’s a character I was quite proud of because I had to put even more thought into it as I was dealing with a bunch of slowly reforming murderhobos and teens who were also just new to dnd in general. I wanted to show them the joys of playing a different way and I needed a character that could hook their interest like that. It ended up working and now more of them put thought into their roleplay and have come to enjoy that side of gameplay far more than inciting combat. They have also come to love the lore and exploration of the world more too. It’s been nice. I had prepared for being attacked possibly which was also why the swarm (to push them away or move myself, etc, or cast blade ward) so ask to minimize that. I ended up filling an esoteric role, one that was more about spirituality than religion which ended up contrasting me well with the cleric of the group whose role was to help try to reform the group by inviting and guiding them via the religion of the cleric and that god. So we had a god and the souls of the dead guiding the group and they could lean towards whichever they pleased for guidance when they roleplayed their reformation. It was just a ton of fun to do this (btw the cleric is also the only other adult of the group too who made their character the way they did for much the same reason as I, lol). Anyway! Loved hearing about your monk! I loved hearing how you decided on his build and design and how and why he came into the story. Honestly love the thought put into these late entry characters. It’s always a ton of fun to hear how they are built when that much thought is put in.

Just a note to others who watch. It's not a bad thing to optimise, it isn't bad to make an optimal choice. D&D is a Roleplay Dice Game, and you should play what you find fun. But it's also a Cooperative Team game. And the fun you have can significantly be reduced if your character is spread too thin, and won't be able to hit anything, or have a decent Spell DC to use their spells.
@AstralArtsYT
@AstralArtsYT 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! This is in no way meant to mock people who optimize! I just prefer to build my characters more for story :)

@@AstralArtsYT yeye, I'm just putting it out there as some might missunderstand. People who optimize sadly get a very bad rep in the DnD community as of late. As it's often associated with "If you optimise you cant create a story"etc. XD

Eyy very similar here with the process, I tend to also just vibe out what the "character" is and then work with race class and the rest its not always like that sometimes things hop into the mind beforehand which is also why there are just so many character turned into NPC cases cuz sometimes you just write stuff down and that "sometimes" happens to be many times a week

As a fellow forever DM, I find it kind if funny. I hardly ever use my PC ideas as NPCs, partly because I make them usually completely different. I normally build my PCs around mechanics and NPCs around concepts. Mostly because as a DM I can just build the mechanics around the concept if need be.
