I think the key here is that action happens when motivation is greater than resistance. We often have some level of motivation whether we start a task or not, but sometimes the resistance is greater than the motivation so we don't start. The wisdom in this quote is that taking action often removes a lot of the resistance that exists at the start of a task, so instead of waiting for motivation to randomly increase, we can trust that once we start some of the resistance will go away and motivation might then be greater than the resistance, allowing us to continue with the task without requiring huge amounts of willpower. Am I good at following this wisdom? Not really. :P

There's a saying along the lines of "You are nothing but a number of days, whenever each day passes then part of you has gone." Another powerful one "Leaving things until later deprives you of the very experiences you need to grow" Constantly reminding myself of this helps put things into perspective and focus on the things that really matter in life. Key points include: 1. Understanding the Root Cause: Importance of identifying the underlying reasons for a lack of motivation and procrastination. They liken it to getting a proper diagnosis before taking medication. 2. Common Causes of Motivation Struggles: Outline several common reasons for struggling with motivation, such as lack of clarity, feeling overwhelmed, feeling unfulfilled, burnout, and lack of a proper system. 3. Brain Dump Technique: Starting the day with a brain dump to clear the mind of all tasks and thoughts, which helps reduce feelings of overwhelm. 4. Prioritization: Using the Eisenhower Matrix, tasks are categorized into urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. This helps prioritize tasks effectively. 5. Focus of the Day: Picking one main task each day that aligns with long-term goals, dedicating at least 20 minutes to it. 6. Elimination of Non-Essential Tasks: From the initial list of tasks, eliminate five to focus on the most critical ones. This helps manage workload and avoid burnout. 7. Daily Tracking and Reflection: At the end of each day, review the tasks completed and reflect on what went well and what could be improved. This reflection helps in adapting and improving productivity methods over time. 8. Adapting and Adjusting: Importance of being flexible and adjusting methods based on what works best for the individual.

I agree so much with setting time for life building tasks. You have to learn to not only willingly make the choice to ignore ultra stressful urgent tasks to focus on seemingly selfish tasks like hitting the gym, but to also see that choice as a literal investment in your future and your literal current mental stability. Most people would engage in these tasks feeling that they are wasting their time and that perspective in many cases makes the problem worse. A mindset shift sounds too simple and stupid to work, but it's the extreme opposite. It's very hard to shift your mindset to thinking like this because at first you are just deluding yourself into thinking that doing these tasks will help you. Facts most of the time aren't enough to force this mindset shift. However, eventually after sometime engaging in these activities, you do see the benefits and not the self delusion and at that point, the shift is done because now you'll understand how and why from an anecdotal level you can actually take an urgent task, completely ignore it and willingly engage in selfish activities and not feel stressed about it.

And some days you may need to go to a different beach to find a decent wave.

I love this. I've had very similar struggles, and I like the way this method embraces imperfection (eliminate 5 things you actually planned to do, etc.). It makes it seem more realistic--and robust. I plan to try it out. Quick note about feedback. I recommend writing it down or recording it somewhere you can come back and review. (Even if, for you, like for me, holding it all in your head is easier, eventually your brain will streamline those memory banks enough you'll probably start to forget.) And, if something has worked for you at one time, and then not worked at another, I recommend revisiting it from time to time, so you can uncover when it works for you and when it doesn't. I tried doing this in my head for many years. Eventually, after about 7 years, I had had enough bad days that I'd eliminated everything that had once helped. I felt helpless, and I suffered years of burnout. That's why I recommend recording what went well somewhere besides your brain, so you don't have to remember it, and so you can go back over it when you're low on options and try things that work well for you most of the time, even if they aren't perfect--because what is really perfect?
