Jefe has a leadership mentality. You can't lead if you don't know how to follow. All leaders are in a chain of command of leaders(hierarchy). Attempting to jump the chain before you're ready is generally seen as weak and disqualifying because you're not ready for the top rank until you've climbed the lower ranks first. Leaders understand the entire relationship of the chain of command. Mad only sees the top. He doesn't understand relationships. Not yet anyway. Preacher seems to be grooming Jefe for leadership because he likes his temperament and his deliberation. I think Preacher see's Mads as a boy that can't lead a pack yet. Leadership is more than brawling though brawling is a tool of leadership. Jefe's got brains. He sees all the relationships and understands them. Clever boy. He knows what Rachel wants as well. In another breed and another pack, I wouldn't assume such intelligence. But I've watched these guys a lot. When Mad took the stick, Jefe scanned every pack member in his environment -- including his leader Rachel. He knows the hierarchy like the back of his paw. I'm pretty sure he knows that if he goes after Mads, it will cause a fight but that fight will be stopped by Rachel and won't be resolved -- he's seen that many times from the Preach/Mad conflicts. Jefe sees a direct dominance play as non-profitable. So he picks somebody he knows will submit without a fight so Rachel won't break it up. Jefe is playing the long game. I think he respects his dad but he's also getting into his dad's good graces so his dad and the rest of the pack builds up trust in Jefe's stability. Mad's high energy can't be seen as anything good for the pack. Preacher sees Jefe as respectful and as an ally (and legacy). It can't be lost on Preacher that jefe is big and capable and Preacher would instinctively know that a large but friendly ally will one day lead the pack. He's training Jefe for fighting though I'm sure that's just a side effect of instincts which are saying, "This guy is big but still a pup and he's showing me respect. I like him." Jefe even has Rachel twisted around his paw -- which means that he understands what she wants from him. He knows that Rachel is the Alpha of this pack and she's the gatekeeper to his success. In his calculation, he knows it's profitable to watch what Rachel wants from him, and limit himself to those behaviors. I think the minute Rachel allows Jefe to do something extra, he will. I don't think he's afraid of scrapping, I think he's afraid that he'll lose status in Rachel's eyes if he does something (or allows something) she wouldn't approve of. It's possible I'm reading too much into things but we'll see in the months and years ahead. Jefe's actions aren't limited by capability, they're limited by choice. He wouldn't have delayed a reaction with Mad if he wasn't working out consequences.
@wisewoman79063 жыл бұрын
I don't think your assessment is very far off the mark. Interesting how you read the dogs.
@michaeldavid68323 жыл бұрын
@@wisewoman7906 Rachel's channel has been good at getting me to observe the quicker interactions that are nothing to us humans but everything to the dogs. On a related note, they did experiments with recall on Chimps. On a touch screen, they'd flash tiles of random numbers and the chimps had to remember their order and push the buttons in numeric order. The interesting result: chimps are better than humans at this task. Much better. Their short term recall is almost photographic and it takes in a lot of details. They theorize that humans sacrificed that ability by allocating the hardware to long term storage and planning. The cost of instant recall is that it isn't stored that long in full detail. My guess is that most mammals have similar recall as chimps. They take in every nuance of what they see and it sticks for a few moments. Humans can only register so many details simultaneously but other mammals probably don't have the same issue because their brains weren't adapted for long term storage. What the dogs are seeing cognitively in the short term are details we have to carefully watch for. The more Rachel points out those details, the more it becomes apparent to me that dogs see the world similarly to chimps (and likely other mammals) -- as a photo which sticks around long enough that the dog's actions can react to it. That's why a single glance communicates so much to dogs -- like a photo taken of an important moment. They can see all the details whereas humans may only register what we're conditioned to look for. I've watched many hours of Rachel's videos. Enough to correlate what she's saying 100% with how the dogs behave. It's very consistent but it may seem so if you only watch a single video. The actions are so quick that you don't think anything of it. Just one brief face-to-face glance with stiff tail is an invitation to a fight. Dogs fascinate me. I grew up with them. Mutts, Goldens, pugs, a stubborn Mutt-Hound I had train out of dominance issues and nippiness as a puppy(was taken from her litter mates too early). I don't currently own a dog because I worked most of the day away from home until Covid. That's why I watch so many dog videos. I miss them.

Preacher is such an amazing beauty! Not to say the others aren't I just love Preachers face and temperament. Now I see Preacher being challenged alot and he does his own strutting and flexing but is the reason he rarely goes for his own dominance is due to the leadership you have shown? Is that why he doesn't feel like he has to fight/battle as hard for his place? I hope this question makes sense.

These kennels work well for your dogs? I've been trying to figure out what the best kennels would be that aren't $10K each lolol.... but are strong enough that my Dogos will be contained. This video is awesome. Did you learn all you know just from being around the dogs? With my dog's they tend to have same sex aggression...stemming from the base Cordoba fighting dog I believe as a lot of Dogo owners say the same thing. I thought I'd be able to get a better handle on it by teaching them as pups but as they approach a year, it has not been going well. I guess I'll just keep trying to learn and I'll be watching your videos as well!!. Lol... you just voiced my life : I don't like my dogs out when I'm not here.... yes. It's a constant worry. I feel ya! But all in all how do you like those kennels and what kind are they if you don't mind? We did concrete on the inside but the outside kennels, I'd love to do something like this. Also, if a fight breaks out... do you have any advice? We've had a few between females , and one between my Dom. Female and male and it's the worst thing I've ever been through. We wheelbarrowed them and got them away from eachother but any advice you have would be amazing. We just keep them turned out with who they get along with now but would like them to be able to play together as the fights only happen on occasion... it's not like they hate eachother. Thanks so much
