In our Asian culture we don’t ‘have’ to cook, you help out as you would with your mother at home. Your mother in law isn’t a maid to cook for you but yes usually as it’s their house they would be cooking but we wouldn’t just expect them to cook and not help out. Feel like it’s instilled in us which is a good trait imo.

You shouldn’t expect your MIL to do everything on her own just the same way she shouldn’t expect you to do everything on your own.

There are daughter in laws that are divas who don't pull their weight, and there are mother in laws who think they and the rest of the household should be waited on hand and foot now they have a "maid". When a new woman joins the household there should be give and take; she should realise things have been a certain way for years before she arrived and likewise the mother in law should also allow her the space and time to adjust as well as exercise some independence. Sadly, many times this cooperation doesn't happen and it ends badly.
