As a professional photographer in the US, I have photographed Vietnamese, Thai, and Laos weddings. I have found the Laos to be the most friendly and laid back, the Thai coming in a close second. I liked that a lot, much better than the judgements put on you by people from the western society, what's your work? What kind of car do you drive? How big is your house? Tedious... 🙄 You are not what you do, or own, your actions, values define you.

For all those men that asked " How do I meet a nice Lao Lady" I honestly think it is a destiny and also when you do good things, being honest. You will be blessed in all that you do and a happy life. In some case. When the men aren't as truthful and no honesty in their life span, they will get what they are giving out to any relationship. Always be your best and so your best than good things will follow.

I really enjoy your videos. I visited Vientiane and Luang Probang in January 2018. I travelled with my Laos GF who I met 10 Years Ago then. She is originally from Vientiane. We are now engaged. And like your experience, her family was accepting of me without feeling interrogated. I love the people and culture. So glad we are together. We plan on going back to Laos in 2020. I want to bring my Drone and capture the culture from above like you have. Thanks for the great videos Michael

Well, my friend, I'm really happy for you. This is what I call true love. You are so dead-on about the westerner asking what we do for a living. In Laos, to me, it's considered rude to ask someone what they do for a living. What does it matter? Why do you want to know what I do for a living? I take that as someone wanting to know how rich or poor I am before they want to know who I really am. In other word, NOSEY! BTW, I am from Laos. Just visite my country this past March after I left Laos for 35 years and hadn't been back since. Will go back soon though LOL

Yeup. Whether they know it or not, they are judging you. Most of the time it is an innocent question, but after libing in Laos I gave come to realise it is a nosey question. A better question would be..."So what do you like to do for fun?" 🍺😎👍

Jeez Todd. Aside from the similarities in our age, first & last names, ethnicity and now how we met our wives, it's eerie. I met my wife in Udon Thani in the mid 1990s when visiting my childhood friend in Thailand. He was an engineer for Ford and his Thai wife became ill and my wife was her nurse at the hospital. Al Gore had yet to finalize his completion of the internet and thus no Facebook then either, so we wrote letters for two years. You are absolutely right how well you can get to know someone just through writing. We married in 1998 and I could never have dreamed of finding a more perfect woman. She and I will definitely return to Udon when I retire in Feb 2029. Hope to have MANY beers with you then Todd.

This is a very moving story about how you met the love of your life. I love your videos as I do want to visit my parents' homeland and visit the relatives that they have left during the war. I believe that you are right on when you are looking for for something like love or answer, things do come when you're not looking for it but also good things do come along the way as you're searching for an answer that might knock you off the path. My advice if that person is looking for a good woman, they would have to be a good person themselves to attract that kind of energy. And if they want to find that particular person/nationality, they should totally integrate/immerse themselves to that area/culture. Go to Laos, go to the Laotian/Asian communities, Lao dating sites, or attend a Lao new year festival in the area or near your area. Put yourself out there! Keep up the great work!

Your comment about Lao people never asking about "what do you do for a living" is so interesting from a Chinese perspective. When I'm traveling in China complete strangers I get into 5 minute conversations with will ask me "what do you do *and* how much money do you make?" The conversation will usually start with me apologizing in advance that my Chinese is rubbish because I grew up overseas, followed *immediately* by them asking me about my job and income. And it isn't just about my background either - plenty of farangs have been directly asked this as well. And my China-born-and-raised extended family are the same - they're just constantly in a state of comparison and judgment - comparing themselves and especially their children with those of others. It's absolutely exhausting, and I hate to say it, but a lifetime of exposure to such a culture has made me into someone who does the same automatic mental comparison as well, with the only difference being I don't verbalize it and I can sometimes catch myself doing it, but I'd be lying if I said it's not affecting my psyche in some subconscious way.
