The problem was that they spent 8 series developing Ted into a character who can let go of Robin and Barney into a guy who can be committed to one woman... then in the last 5 minutes they threw it all out and turned them back into the guys they were in episode 1.

+mattwho81 It was just that...I saw Barney and Robin not working out from a mile away. Robin had so many doubts about marrying him. she even listed reasons not to marry him half a day before the wedding. Also Barney and Robin never talked about problems until the snowballed, because they were emotionally unavailable for various reason; that's not a good basis for a long term relationship. it isn't unbelievable Barney relapsed after a failed marriage. Like how an alcoholic relapses after a traumatic event in life. I think the ending was alright, not perfect but it was alright.

+Kay Jay she had doubts because she knew the type of guy he was but he fell in love and settled down with her...then they destroy the barney character only to have him regress back to his old self while everyone else has progressed for the better...its just lazy writing from their part

Barney wasn't the same. He had Ellie, and he even told two, as he would put it, "hotties" to go home. I'm not saying I liked the ending, because Robin annoys me, but I see it and accepted it. The show isn't about how he met their mother. It's the long love story of him and Robin. Sure, Tracy was perfect. But she wasn't Robin. Robin remained the same, because she had no changes as a character, besides not being able to have children (which wasn't even part of her plan). The show really puts the tough reality of life just when Ted gets left at the altar. And from the there they really build up the love trio Ted/Barney/Robin. Of those three, Barney was building up towards being an actual adult. Ted was continuing his love quest. And Robin stayed the same. But I digress. The point is, the show's finale is really good and sums up himym. It's brilliant and makes you think about the little signs throughout the series. I accept the ending, and the more you watch it, the more you really get it.

I feel like the whole Robin and Ted thing was forced. She clearly was never that in to him. In fact, after their break up it seems like the only times she was interested was when he was with somebody else. Ted did love Robin like crazy though. He was obsessed. Robin cared for Ted and loved him as a friend but she was never in love with him the way Ted was in love with her.
@rainiskarro2460

That is such a bs. They absolutely were not the same they were at the start. Ted WAS able to let Robin go. He was happly with Tracey for years! And even after her passing he did not rushed to Robins in the next day. It took him 6 years. What was he supposed to do. Remain on his own? Then I suppose Tracey should have done the same after death of Max? I mean Ted and Robin had and enduring bond. Robin did not realize it at some point, but eventually she changed in that regard. Up to last episode it was Ted who thought they should be together, when he stopped it, Robin started to think so (which is btw very consistent with what happened prior to Barney and Robin marrige where Barney tolt he stops running after her). And Barney being the same? Are you kidding me? He devoted his life to his child. That is nothing like episode 1 Barney would ever do. It took event like becoming a father (and COMMITING TO IT) to change the guy. It would have been lazy writing to just linearly developing charecters like you would have wishsed for. Instead, he had a breaking point when he realized something. I think the very reason people are dissapointed at the ending is that they just were proven wrong and people don't like that. Everyone thought they knew what will happen and when proven wrong, they just started to bitch about it...

they made you THINK it was about the umbrella. If it really was about the Mother instead of Robin, the story would've started either the first day of college when he met Marshall or started at Barney and Robin's wedding. The story starts with Robin and centers around her so much that it makes sense that ends with her. And whoever called her a liar about the alternate ending, you're stupid. The alternate ending ONLY exists on the DVD and the only person they brought in to make the new ending was Bob Sagget for the voice over stuff. All video footage in the alternate ending was stuff they already had from shooting season 9 as is.

blink182lives100 personally I believe Ted is more compatible with the pastry chef (I can't remember her name). But it wasn't my story to tell, it was Carter Bays' story to tell. My only complaint is that there's like 3 or 4 episodes in season nine that I wish were replaced with actual plot pushing episodes. Barney's parents, waste of an episode. The final slap, waste of an episode, Darrin, waste of an episode.

The morbid ending was fine. But they should have ended the show right when they said hi at farhampton. End scene with "and that kids, is how I met your mother." THERE WAS NO NEED FOR ROBIN AND TED TO BE ENDGAME. It is a slap in the face when the show is about the mother and ted finding each other.
@tpoppapuff
@tpoppapuff 8 жыл бұрын
The original ending gave the resolution to the near decade long story the show was about. The show was always about Ted and Robin. The show was never about the mother. The mother was a McGuffin. She was a plot device that had little to do with the overall plot. Ted and Robin were the endgame. That was the point of the show; Ted and Robin. The title How I Met Your Mother became very apparent by the end of the first season that the show was not about the mother. It would have been a slap in the face to watch Ted and Robin will they/won't they for nine seasons and then have the mother swoop in at the finale and make nearly a decade's worth of investment rendered pointless. That's a slap in the face.

@dragonwyrm2
@dragonwyrm2 8 жыл бұрын
+tpoppapuff Although I understand what you are saying, I disagree. The story was about all of the characters' progress and growth as people, not just the relationship between Ted and Robin. We got to see Ted grow to be a person who could finally let go of the thing holding him back, which was Robin. The ending was a slap in the face to all those who saw this evolution. Ted, in the end, did not grow as a person because he went back to Robin.
@tpoppapuff
@tpoppapuff 8 жыл бұрын
Dragonwyrm It wasn't ONLY about Ted and Robin, but Ted's maturation is the reason they got back together at the end. If you think it's a slap in the face, then you didn't actually understand his character growth. Ted ended up with Robin because he had grown as a person. Their relationship was never going to work out together because of where Ted was as a character during the entire run of the show up until the point in the finale. He had several experiences during that time but never matured enough to actually understand love and separating that from obsession and his preconceived notions of a soulmate and what that actually means. Robin became preconceived notion. She was this ideal of what Ted had always had in his mind, but it was false. He wasn't mature enough as a character. During the show's nine seasons we watched Ted slowly become a little bit wiser and a bit more jaded until we finally saw him at his breaking point with his obsession with everything that Robin represented. To that point he had never evolved as a character because he kept relapsing. He never did evolve until that last episode when he finally let the idea of Robin go. That was the point at which he evolved. That was his turning point. He didn't gradually evolve over the course of the show, he only became more frustrated and pushed toward that evolution. That single moment where Ted let go of his romanticized ideals and obsession, was worth ten thousand episodes we could have watched before and still would have never evolved the character as much as that single moment. Ted's maturation during those nine seasons would be measured in baby steps whereas that moment is measured in miles. It was in that moment that he truly evolved as a character by any discernible, meaningful degree. And, not coincidentally, he once he let go of "Robin," which again was a stand in for all of his obsession and preconceived notions of what a soulmate is, did he finally meet and accept someone as a person that could give him everything he ever needed. That was a new Ted, one that made an incredible leap in a short amount of time and only very briefly over the course of a couple minutes of screen time. That is the mature Ted though. That is a completely new Ted. And that is the Ted who doesn't end up with "Robin," his obsession and preconceived notions of what a soulmate is, but instead ends up with Robin, the actual character on the show. What you're failing to realize that the Ted that ends up with Robin at the end of the series is not the same Ted that showed up at Robin's apartment with a blue French horn in the first episode. That parallelism between the end of the first episode and the end of the last episode was a narrative device; this time things work out for Ted and Robin because Ted is a more mature person.
@dragonwyrm2
@dragonwyrm2 8 жыл бұрын
+tpoppapuff oh, so you're saying Ted's character growth was from him no longer requiring the qualities that were on his list, in his significant other, and rather then letting go of Robin in the episode "sunset", he let go of his obsession with her?

@Theinen84
@Theinen84 6 жыл бұрын
John Jams Major differences there buddy 1. Max wasn't even a character. He was a reference and began and ended at "He and Tracy were happily together and he died". 2. The ENTIRE SHOW was a build up to her. Her personality traits were peppered throughout the episodes, with Narrator Ted giving little tidbits on how she reacted positively to his little quirks that drove everyone else insane. The audience was endeared to her LONG before the character was even cast, let alone made an appearance. 3. The fans were blatantly lied to in order to keep this brilliant "twist". The creators were asked if Ted and Robin would end up together. They answered no. They were asked if Robin was the Mother. They answered no (technically a lie as they make her out to be the only Mother Luke actually knows and a second one to Penny). They were then asked, even before it was made obvious during the "future moments" between her and Ted, whether Ted was sitting them down to tell them the story because the Mother was dead. They answered no again. It's one thing for a story to use misdirection, getting you to focus on one thing while the truth is there the whole time, but they LIED about the obvious outcome. 4. Holy crap people get on my nerves with that "life isn't always happy" moments. Don't crap the ending of an endearing show, even after it'd run longer than it should have, and say it's being "realistic". If it was realistic, Marshall would have a great deal of difficulty becoming the lawyer he was, much less the judge he would be, due to the many things he's done and plastered all over the internet. Barney would have multiple STDs, more than one child, several stalkers, death threats, battered by angry husbands/boyfriends, multiple arrests, and, in all likelihood, dead. There's no way Robin would have EVER been struggling in her career. Given who her dad was, she probably wouldn't even have that career. I mean who encouraged her to go be a pop star if he killed off all semblance of feminine behavior? And she's a pop star, even if largely in Canada, as popular as they made her out to be, she would've started as an anchor. Not out in snowstorms covering fluff material. That also would've translated over and helped her in NY. Given how he wants them all to succeed and how he loves them in his own way, her dad would have also pulled strings to help her out. They lied, thinking that would keep the interest and buzz, instead of relying on the show to carry itself. They ignored good writing to stick to an ending before any of the characters developed and expressed regret over doing so. They slapped a lame excuse on it for the sake of a "twist" and called it "realistic". No. It sucked. It was the equivalent of Luke calling out to Vader in agony from Force Lightning and Vader walking up and just going "Dude... I've ruled the galaxy for 20 years with an iron fist, killed entire armies solo, and one of the first vile things I did was kill kids. But since you said 'please', that changes everything! Whoops..." as he stabs him with a lightsaber. That would've been "realistic", but that's not what the story was naturally heading towards.
@johnjams5278

Theinen84 how is that a major difference? Matt was to Tracy what Tracy is to Ted. And most of my previous reply came from an interview with Neil Patrick Harris. Do I think Ted will stay with Robin? Hell no, it didn't work the first time because she wanted to travel. But, it makes sense that he would go back to her. Robin isn't the mother, because the show never shows Ted and Robin getting married. Also, you're mad because they lied to you? Really? In that same interview with Neil Patrick Harris, the interviewer (I don't remember who) responded to Neil when he said, "the ending made a lot of people mad" with, "well, they really don't have a reason to be, I mean it was free to them". That really made me start thinking. I used to be upset about the ending, but when I heard that I began to rationalize the story. If the mother didn't die, he would have been with the mother, but because she did, it makes sense that Ted would go back to Robin. What did you want to happen? Tracy and Ted to live happily ever after? I think it would have been better if we would have had an entire season to get to know Tracy before she died, but they didn't want it that way.
@zacharytaylor7217

I don't have a problem with the ending. My issue is the way it was presented. I really wish Barney and Robin's wedding was the Season 8 finale, and that Season 9 focused more on the mother's integration into the group. (assuming a 24 episode season) episodes 1 to about 8 could have been similar to the finale, just with more detail. we could have seen Tracy get sick shortly after that period, and have about episodes 9-16 focus on her illness with her dying at the end of that period. The kids imply that Robin has become a common fixture in their lives as well as Ted's, so those last few episodes could have eased into Ted and Robin's new relationship to make it seem less sudden. While I wish the Tracy had lived, my problem wasn't with her death as much as it was the speed at which the story seemed to move past her off-screen death, and suddenly the kids are like "go get Robin!"

The thing is that the line "How I met your mother" needed to be delivered in the final episode so the title makes sense. I can digest the ending. The death of the mother, heartbreaking as it is, all the more highlights the importance of the story the father is telling to his kids who have lost their mother in childhood. That being said, we needed less of the shenanigans associated with the wedding in the final season and more of Tracy.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. It is a profound and complex story...and I had a similar experience with my father telling me about my dead mother. Because of that, I picked up many things along the way that gave you clues that the mother is no longer alive. Among those clues, during the entire narration, Ted never says anything like :just ask you mother" There is no reference in all the narration that indicates he is talking about a living person that he loves. Rather, he is trying to get over his loss. In the last scene with the kids, they are pushing Ted to get back out there, and especially to rekindle his feelings for Robin. Tracy tells Ted in one of the last episodes where the unsaid background is she has a terminal condition that she worries that Ted might become someone lost in their stories. Surprisingly, in the second to last scene of the series, Penny is functioning like Lily giving Ted the advice he needs to hear,

People need to stop hating on the ending. I was as mad and bitter as anyone, but you need to realize the message that they were trying to convey by it. Was it the ending you wanted? No. Everyone wants the happy ending where they live happily ever after, but that's not how life works. And if anything, I would say that the theme of making the best of life's twist and turns is MORE consistent with HIMYM's theme through the years than some fairy tale ending. I'm not fond of the whole Ted/Robin romance, but that's not an excuse to overlook the beautiful message that this show has been trying to convey since it aired. So show a little loyalty, and instead of reacting with outrage, really think about why they chose the ending that they did.
@tylergirl1970
@tylergirl1970 10 жыл бұрын
I disagree and I'm still going to hate on the terrible ending. The reason it was so bad wasn't because of what you think the show's "message" had been. We spent an ENTIRE season focusing on just the weekend of the wedding of Barney and Robin and about 10 minutes into the next episode it's over? That felt cheap. They were certainly asking us to invest ourselves in that relationship by having a whole season revolve around it. To just end it the next episode and have Ted right back after Robin after all the buildup of the Mother being his soulmate was just wrong. There is no way to spin that into being a representation of their "message". They asked us as an audience to invest in all of those things and then pulled the rug out from under us. Bad... tylergirl1970 I totally agree with you... And it's a comedy, for God's sake! Besides, Robin-Barney breakup in 10 minutes goes against any logic, couldn't she change job to give Barney a chance? If she is so self centered, there will be no chance of success with Ted too... No, there are no excuses, this was a very poor and inconsistent finale.

radoico tylergirl1970 agree with you two, it doesn't make any sense. And Robin and Barney belong together , Ted and Robin broke up, and get back together, and broke up, and it doesn't make any sense to get back together again. And hole season was about Barney's and Robin's wedding and then 10min after it we found out it's over. And Ted is telling a story about the love of his life. He said he loved the mother , but at the same time he's got fellings for Robin. And Barney gets child with some random girl, and stays alone. And he still got fellings for Robin. I mean, he said that he loves her when they broke up. I'm so sad about him. The show was great, but the ending is awful.

Victor Chin "that's insane" does not always necessarily mean no. It could just mean that's insane that they would do that, or that's insane that the fans have figured it out. She gave a politician's answer ie answering the question without actually answering the question and let the public infer what they want. It's not actually lying. I bet the producers were impressed with that.

Anastasia Sandjaya She actually didn't because he asked her if she shot in any alternate ending and said no while rolling the eyes. That was true since they didn't shot anything for the alternate ending. They just made a montage of previous scenes of the show with Bob Sagget narating. But didn't shoot anything additional. I think the alternate ending wasn't planned, they did it because the real ending sucked and people hated it. Too bad it was too little too late.

You're kinda correct indeed... But if you notice, the alternate ending didn't have any extra scenes that the original ending didn't have.. It contains the part where Lily said about how emotionally strong Ted was (or something like that), and the station-scene, but they did add in a quick little recap of the series.. So, perhaps Cristin actually thought that there was indeed no alternate ending, and the directors of the show made it after Cristin did this interview.. One thing I also actually like in the alternate ending is that for the final credits they decided not to play the theme song, but instead a more emotional song, just to emphasize the fact that the series has ended..

Well, technically she never lied about dying. She just said that it was crazy and ridiculous. She never said that it was false. She also didn't lie about that alternate ending either. The question was if they had filmed an alternate ending. They didn't film alternate scenes, they just made a different cut. The alternate ending was made long after they had wrapped things up (probably after that interview as well). So she never lied about anything.

Firstly, she had to lie because she's under contract and the ending hadn't been aired yet at the time of this interview. She didn't want to hint that the ending might be sad, or that the fans theories that they didn't want to happen, were true. The ending that was aired was perfect, no matter how you slice it. The point of HIMYM is fate and the universe putting people together and tearing them apart, and how no matter what you do, fate will always put you where you are meant to be, to overcome challenges and become a better person for it. It's about life being imperfect and challenging and forcing us to push forward and stay the course. It's about not giving up hope or love even in the darkest and most painful of times. The ending was beautiful, and anyone who says otherwise is just bitter because it reflects real life instead of a "fairy tale ending" like most movies and T.V. shows do. The point is, they went with the ending they did because it meant more for the overall message the show was trying to convey. No matter what, fate will take care of you, and even if you don't understand what's happening and why, one day it will all make sense and you will end up exactly where you're meant to be, even if it means crawling through fire and glass to get there. Tell me again how that's a bad ending?

People may like or dislike an episode of a sit-com for any number of reasons. And she didn't actually "lie." She simply said the death theory was "insane." And they didn't shoot alternate endings - they simply edited an alternate ending by leaving out the stuff about her death and Ted hooking up with Robin. She did a neat job of sidestepping the questions without lying.

My issue with the ending is how they spent a whole last season building up Ted finally letting go of Robin. Then, just 1 episode later, they destroy all of it. Why? What was the point? It makes so much of the series a waste of time. All the buildup of the yellow umbrella, for what? Just to toss it in the trash 10 minutes later and go right back to the blue horn. It was just... bad. It turned the beautiful story about fate and long awaited love into a cheap hook to keep viewers watching. And it turned the title from "How I met your mother" into "How I met your mother so she could be conveniently killed off to fix the whole we dug ourselves into when we said 'Aunt Robin' in season 1". The alternate ending is definitely the real ending IMO. The one that was aired was just a crappy messed up dream Ted had after sipping a bit too much scotch.

I like the "morbid" ending a lot: it makes the story more realistic and therefore the show turned from light entertainment to more serious one. And this is why you don't believe actors when they debunk things. I don't understand why she did it, really. We needed to know so that we wouldn't be blindsided by the actual ending. It's only because we knew about this ahead of time that we can accept it at all. Though, honestly, go back and watch the first season, back when they wrote the finale. There were tons of downer endings in that season. The finale wouldn't feel out of place at all back then. It's only because of what went on in between that it feels wrong. Heck, first season, I'd barely call it a sitcom. The funny doesn't really get brought until like season 4 or so.

I totally agree! I mean if the show had ended back in S1 and they'd made Victoria the mother and everything I would've been totally ok with the ending but with what went on in the other EIGHT seasons it makes NO sense!

Gottta say im somewhat diappointed happy ted and robin git together but the way it happened seem random and inorganic. I did read something months ago predicting her death so I was prepared but wish they gave more of a story with her. One thing I am extremely pissed off about is them having like 10 episodes dedicated to the wedding of Barney and Robin and have them divorce in 10 seconds over like nothing.

cooljak30 I agree. I can't believe they would build up to something like that for seasons, and literally spend the entire last season in the weekend of that wedding, and then within a few minutes of the finale be like, "Oh yeah it was hard, so we got divorced. Anywayyyyy......" When I first read the theory of the mother dying, I was crushed, and I thought that was such a shitty thing to do. But I could have never imagined that they were killing her off, and wrecking Robin and Barney's marriage, all so we could go right back to square one and that blue french horn.

Exactly they could have gone for that ending if they had simply executed it better. The only thing that made sense about it to me was that hey could finally be with Robin now cause he could love, married, had kids, started a family, had his dream home, essentially completed all his goals and shit that would have prevented him and Robin from having a relationship. They both did actually Robin was at height of her career. So no issueswould arrise as well as resentment. Still, just poor execution. Wife dies they cant even respect us with info of disease, robin and barney break up essentially over no wifi (there was more to it but so I feel the issue of traveling could have easily been rectified). Barney doesnt really change or become a better person, he knocks up 31 chicks in a row and gets one pregnant. I had no clue how I was supposed to feel about that. He doesnt even have the decency to call the mother of his child by name. Lily and Marshal are my favs but I was still upset they couldnt make sacrifices for each other like seriously he had the ability to be a judge so early in his career and you wanna do art. They could have compromised, or lily coulda gone to to italy for a year, while Marshal stays back, etc. Luckily he still became a judge later down the line but still. All in all I feel HIMYM warranted a whole nother season in stead of trying to crame one into a single 2 pt ep. Like theirs no excuse after all the full eps they had focusing on nothing and then had a ep try to fit EVERYTHING. they shoulda cut the wedding arc down and added the storyline. Oh well whats down is down I guess. Just feel finales are a shows last hurrah and farewell to audience and fans and should be down extremely well and leave no doubts, issues, problems or questions.

Her characters name was told in season 2 (I think, was it season 2?) When a stripper came up to Ted and said "my names amber".. Ted: "I'm Ted" Stripper: "my real names Tracy" Ted: "I'm still ted" Prestent Ted's voice over: "and that show I met your mother." ... I kind of figured out that the mother had to be called Tracy or the kids wouldn't of fell for Ted's phoney story. I know it doesn't take genius to figure it out,but I sure felt like one at the time xD

If you listen to her response, she answered "that's insane" or "that's crazy". She never really said no or denied it. "That's insane" could also mean it's insane how the fans knew all along that she had died. The title doesn't really correlate with her response because she never debunked the theory.

The mother dying was referenced in season 8 E20 "Time Travelers"- Ted says he would give anything to have more days with her (when he fantasizes about knocking on her doorstep)- That was an extremely emotional moment and it has hints of the mother not being around anymore. Throughout the series there are clues about this. The writers had it planned all along. It might not be the ideal ending for most, but the writers fulfilled their vision for this show and this story. Also, Cristin never debunks the theory- It seems that her statements "it's insane/crazy" were meant for the reporter's comments about the circulating buzz about the mother. She tried to avoid answering the question in the best way she could. The ending was indeed beautiful- what Ted says about her and the way he remembers her is a beautiful thing. But hey, everybody is entitled to an opinion. It is good to watch the series again and pay attention to the clues though :p

One thing I find funny is that Ted is actually the last person in the circle of friends to meet "The Mother".Barney was the first one, as he hit on her in the drugstore, I guess a year or so before.Then it was Lily who met her on the train to Farhampton, where The Mother shared her sumofabitch cookies while listening to Lily's story.Then it was Marshall, who met her while he was walking the last 5 miles to Farhampton, and she picked him up in the van she stole from Darren.Then it was Robin, who literally ran into The Mother on Robin's wedding day in the last few hours before the ceremony.Then it was Ted, who finally walked up and talked to The Mother at the Farhampton train station, several hours after Barney and Robin's wedding.
