I think the only problem was the pacing of the final season. Being stuck in the moment for the entire season, then rush ahead 20 years in the last few minutes. The wedding should have been the first 2 episodes of the season, then all the other episodes should have been a little bit of flash-forward, so we can catch up with their life events and how those affected them. Experience those events with the characters instead of just being told about them. I think this way more people would have been okay with the ending.

The thing is, the show is called How I met your mother, further than that it doesnt make any sense. If Ted met Tracy in the beginning of the 9th season, people would say that the rest of the season is 'filler' (idk if that's how you say it in English, sorry). I think there shouldnt have been a 9th season, it destroys the timing
@starlighter93
@starlighter93 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get what you mean. Maybe the best solution would have been to cut the flash-forwards all-together. Ted met the mother at the train station and roll credits. They lived happily ever after. Or maybe a flash-forward to their wedding. They both say "I do" and then kiss. The End. To be fair, the title 'How I Met Your Mother' was not the best choice after all. The creators knew the mother will only show up in the last few episodes, but they "idolised" her for 8 years and the audience grew to love her because of how much Ted loved her. When her death was thrown at us at the end, we felt just as heart-broken as Ted had felt. Same with Barney and Robin. They were portrayed as the perfect match and we spent a whole season at their wedding and all this for nothing. The reality slapped the audience in the face like Marshall slapped Barney for the last time.

Bartolo Clemen: remember what Penny ( Ted's Daughter ) says to Ted -- "mum has been gone for years now". Even if you seem to feel that the kid reacted like Tracy was alive, keep in mind that after years , the wounds heal. Especially when you are so young ( If I remember correctly Penny was still very young and her brother was even younger when Tracy died ) it's easier to move on and don't appear still so hurt. The premise was that the kids asked Ted about how he met Tracy. Remember the episode with the stripper called Tracy? Ted said "and that's how i met your mother" jokingly , to their outrage and surprise. They are capable of joking about it in a very soft way. Tracy still fits: Ted spared no detail at the end about her. All the games and fun with his friends was the long road to Robin and Barneys' marriage where finally Ted meets Tracy.

Exactly, the title explained the plot itself. It talked about *how* he met the mother therefore including his true love which was Robin, besides, the kids were perfectly fine with it. Anyway, I prefer Robin being with Ted than Barney, both of them were alphas, had almost the exact same personalities. They were so perfect for each other, problem was they were too perfect for each other.

This is a great video. And I'd also like to add that everyone often forgets that while Barney, Robin and Ted are in and out of relationships constantly, Marshall and Lily persist in the background as a rock solid couple throughout the entire show, showing us how long-lasting relationships are about evolving with the dynamic nature of life. They are not without obstacles but they have known how to endure them, that's why in one of last episodes, they rewrite their wedding vows. We always want to hear how couples meet, but how many series really show us what a real long term relationship is like, the boring, mundane, depressing parts. Why do we so often forget that true love isn't some goal to achieve, some perfect person to meet, but rather a conscious decision to choose someone over anyone else against all odds. And that's why although Barney and Robin didn't last, we still have Marshall and Lily to remind us what true love is.

I think because they chose this ending over the other shows, that robin is teds Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz and Tracy his Beinaheleidenschaftsgegenstand. @@khanyambeki2929 There's several kinds of love: when Ted's young, all he was searching for was the familial love: the kind of wife who he can be like family with, and have children. He thought he saw that in Robin, but Robin wasn't really the person for that (the kind of love she wants is the passionate, but unrestrained, unbound love), hence why he have to move on. He finally found it with Tracy, but at the end of series, when she's gone, Ted searches for accompanial love: the kind of love to fight off the loneliness of old age. And Robin, now already achieved success, also is searching for this kind of love. Because when you're old, you just want someone to hear your stories, when your kids already move on with their life, and you lived long enough to reach the end of your adventure. So for this purpose, Robin is perfect, because they've already shared a large portion of their past with each other. No, the reason I hated the finale was not because it was unexpected. I didn't necessarily mind the decade of buildup to then kill a character within a couple of episodes, I understand it. The part that I hated, was that they spent the last two seasons going into agonizing detail about barney and robin's relationship and about the fact that robin and ted were just not right for each other, just to dissolve all of the development within three minutes. They could've easily skipped the last season. edit: spelling

I agree. I wish season 9 had started with the wedding then continued the characters lives until Ted finishes his story. Showing scenes of Ted and Tracy together and then the sickness and death and then how Ted realised his feelings for Robin were still there after Tracy died plus how both Robin and Ted changed, would have given a better season. If the showrunners had done that, it would have better. Plus it would have showed how and why Robin and Barney's marriage ended in divorce and why having a kid actually settled Barney. All in all, season 9 should have covered the years between Robin and Barney's wedding and to 2030, where Ted is telling his story. Instead of snippets that do not tell the entire story and left fans angry.
@Daisy-jh9sc
@Daisy-jh9sc 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the last season was a complete waste of time. It didn't build any development, the only actual change to the plot happened in the epilogue. As though the writers had had an idea for how the show ended at the beginning and tried to force it in as an afterthought without taking into account how much the story had changed.
@KayKayon
@KayKayon 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, they should have condensed the wedding weekend down to maybe four to six episodes and then have the remaining sixteen to eighteen episodes focused on what happened after the wedding. If the fans were shown that Ted grieved for Tracy and then come to realise his feeling for Robin had returned, said fans could have accepted Ted and Robin getting together at the end. The finale touched on parts of the characters lives that should have been expanded. Saying that, it was hinted Tracy is dead in 2030 before the finale confirmed it.

The problem with the alternate ending is that it doesn't complete Robin's character arc and completely shits on the foreshadowing of Tracy's death and the most important lesson Ted learned from her: life moves and its not healthy to stay in stories from the past. That's why Tracy gave a love a second chance with Ted and why Ted can have his second true love with Robin in the original finale.

If that was the case, then why show her dying or him going for robin again? That's got nothing to do with meeting the mother either. Also the argument in itself is pretty twisted, because a show isn't only comprised of the content of the title. Especially a show like HIMYM lives of the lot of stuff happening in between. Big bang theory is neither a show about the theory of the big bang nor does it only focus on a physics theory in general. (I know it's just one example, but it should still hold as the argument - titles don't make up the whole of a series)

I actually really liked the ending, I liked that the mother died. I just don’t think Ted and Robin should have ended up together. I liked the realism and heartbreak of the mother’s illness and death. Ted should have just ended up alone though. Him falling in love with Robin again was a massive slap in the face to fans.

I think the problem with the finale is that all the characters are dynamic and change with the story up until the finale, wherein each character forgets their previous 10 years of growth and development. Barney starts as the callous womanizer, becomes a man committed to love and then reverts in the final episode. Ted starts obsessed with Robin, life gets in the way and he moves on...but then life gets out of the way and he reverts in the final episode. Robin starts as a independent woman who is willing to put her professional career over relationships, but grows through the years to be both strong and independent while being able to maintain a committed relationship...until the writers decide, "wait, no she didn't" and she reverts in the final episode. I'm not trying to say that these situations don't happen to real people - they do, and divorce, death, friends growing apart are a part of life. The problem I have with the finale is that it appears the writers wrote a final episode along with the first and shoehorned that ending into the show, even though the show, and the characters, had all evolved.

The characters still evolved and the mother dying was always hinting at. I'd say some of the other stories were done on the idea that "We may get cancelled" so they had to do other stories to end the show on just in case. I totally had the feeling Barney changed. It just wasn't the marriage to Robin to completely do it. The divorce of Robin and Barney actually shows why it never would've worked for Robin and Ted at the time. Robin wanted her career. Barney thought he could handle it, because he could handle no kids. There was just much more to handle. What really got Barney to change, was his daughter. Ted never stopped loving Robin. This doesn't mean he didn't love Tracey. Tracey never stopped loving her dead fiance. This didn't stop her from loving Ted. I have no doubt that Ted would have wished Tracey to stay alive, however, now that she was dead, it was 6 years later and he was ready to try with Robin again. Ted was a guy with two true loves. Robin and Tracey. Just as Tracey had two true loves. I'd say Robin likely had two true loves as well (Ted and Barney).

I just got through the series and this is the exact take I had on the finale. I'm likely a bit older than the HIMYM demographic (40 years old) but this is exactly how I feel about the friends I had in my late 20s. We all cherish those memories and even make it a point to stay in touch. But none of us are trying to relive those random weeknights- we're more just proud of each other continuing to live our best lives with much bigger responsibilities. I've also lost a few friends in my life and the finale was a powerful reminder that happy ever after isn't something that happens at some point, its something you discover and rediscover through the course of your life. The piece about ending up with Robin was a little awkward, only because so much of the last few seasons were so focused on him getting over her, but that's only a minor criticism IMO. This was a really well done representation of how friendships truly evolve (and frankly, should be evolving)

Ok I may be a little bit late to comment but I wanted to point out something : People seemed to forgot that Ted isn’t the first true love of tracey, she lost her boyfriend and first true love the same way Ted did lost tracey : death. So the real beauty of this relationship to me is that they managed to rebuild themselves together (tracey refused when his ex-bf before ted proposed, but she said yes twice to Ted and we can consider he made her go through the pain of her first true love’s death, Tracey gave Ted childrens and love during the time she was alive, exactly what he was seeking for). Then the mother dies : she joins back her first true love. Then Ted goes back to robin : his first (known) true love. I think people misunderstood the end because they take it appart from what happened to the characters involved and see barney and robin divorce as a way to make Ted and Robin go back together

I agree, but I think the point of the last two episodes was to show that everything changes within the blink of an eye. Also, they built up the wedding and spent a season on it bc it was the last biggest moment in their lives that they shared together before all growing apart. They promised to always be there for the big ones, but that wasn't always the case after Robin and Barney's wedding. And the times that they were together, they were all already too far gone from who they used to be. That's probably why the wedding was shown in depth but the other big moments were not.

That's my point of view.

That's what we do best, making life amazing despite all the tragedy that it comes with. I love how they tackle that the gang drifts apart, that's one of the hardest things to accept growing up. It was actually the most I've identified with Robin since many seasons before. It sucks like hell to realize you're just not there for every big moment anymore. I don't hate the finale because I wanted a happy ending. I love sad stories. I hated it because it completely negated all the character development that happened over the past 9 seasons. Ted and Barney in particular. There was literally an entire episode dedicated to Ted letting go of Robin. And Barney finally commits to one person, but then immediately goes back to the womanizing fool he was before. (Although, I do adore the scene when he meets his daughter for the first time. But they could have written that in with him still being married to Robin. They did show Robin slowly warming up to kids.) There are many themes in the show showing how people change throughout the years. But then in the final episode all the characters literally just revert back to how they used to be. I would have been fine with the mother dying. It's Ted going back to Robin that I hate. Don't get me wrong, I love Robin as a character. Ted and Robin are great characters individually. But I despise Ted and Robin as a couple. They are not supposed to be together. Period.

Ted changed when he met Tracey, and again after she died. So does Robin after the divorce and after Tracey dies, she takes to Teds kids. And theres many other character changes. So its just reality, sometimes we fall back on who we want to be, other times we be who we have to be.

I get love not making sense, and sorry if it's me, but I feel as if the development was more for Ted. Barney settles down and Robin is her, and this part is where Ted lets go, slowly making his way to his future wife. And the alternate is simple but satisfying since it answers the question and shows the domino effect that lead to that moment.

I don't think its the fact that the mother passed away that pissed everybody off about the ending. At least for me personally I thought that part was genius and if it had ended with that I think that would've made the perfect ending in my opinion. What pissed me off about the ending was the last 3 minutes the "oh well moms dead, whatever, lets get back together with Robin for the 3rd or 4th time and lets try again even though we're completely different people and a relationship between us doesn't really make sense". That last part to me just felt forced and out of nowhere and really took away the bittersweet, tragic yet beautiful part of the ending.

sean maehl I've been back and forth on this finale. I originally agreed with you, that they spend the whole series leading up to this meeting of the mother only to just say "Oh but she died and do you guys think I should ask out Robin?" But I think this video did well explaining why the mother's death shouldn't be viewed in a negative context, even considering he ended up with Robin. He did say that the time jump at the end of the show was SIX YEARS. Ted's wife died six years ago by the time the end of the episode rolls around. It only seems rushed because it was only minutes for us as viewers. Also, I don't have a problem with Robin and Ted ending up together and their past failed romances because, by the time the end of the episode rolls around, it's been YEARS since they last tried to be together. 6 year time jump, plus the duration of Ted and Tracy's relationship after Barney and Robin's divorce. Plus the duration of Robin and Barney's marriage before that. Plus Ted's relationships with Victoria and Jeanette, etc. And Robin's relationships with Kevin and Nick, etc. Before you get back to the last time Ted and Robin tried to be together. At the end of all this, you're talking about approximately 20 years since they last tried to be together. As the video states, people's lives change and people change with it. The things that kept Ted and Robin apart in their twenties and thirties (Robin's career, Ted's want to settle down and have kids, Robin NOT wanting kids, etc.) are no longer as big of factors in what I presume to be their late 40s or early 50s. Ted has already settled down and has kids. It's implied that Robin's career no longer takes her around the world since she's in New York for Ted to ask her out. As the video stated, Ted ending up with Robin sticks to the theme of change and life happening and being unfair that is present in the whole series. It only seems rushed is because of the time jump, which the person in the video DID state is jarring and is THE complaint he has about the finale. Imagine if the series was extended for however many more seasons and we saw Ted's journey through despair and mourning for those 6 years, but THEN got that ending. I think it would be beautiful. Ted will have experienced true love and got everything he always wanted from Tracy AND learns to love again with someone he has a deep connection with from his past after mourning Tracy, and Robin finally gets the person she acknowledges in the finale she probably SHOULD HAVE been with all along. Ted outside with the blue French horn brings the story full circle, as a nearly identical scene happened in the very first episode.

+sean maehl, exactly!! In Friends, I think almost all viewers were like "just get together already!" and that's what we got. But I never felt like I cared about Robin and Ted's relationship at all. If anything, most turns the series took over the years just made me want that less (like all the break-ups, Ted giving Barney his blessing to marry Robin, Ted not intervening or even caring during their wedding). So in the end, the show just built up to have this amazing relationship in a very nice, classic ending that all viewers could feel emotionally invested in...and then it took everything one step too far.

the thing is, that the video here claims that it's a good ending because it's a realistic ending. I just don't think that's the case. The whole series promoted that idea of finding your true love and remaining in love forever. The characters went through stages of development, where we learned that Barney was a man that tried to fill a void left by his missing father. Ted was looking for his true love, Robin didn't know how to handle love and how to let herself love eventhough it'd be irrational and take sacrifice. Marshall and Lilly that dream team that just worked out perfectly because they supposedly were soulmates. HIMYM had this ethical base and developed these characters to competent adults that have a more realistic understanding of an unperfect world by facing real hardships. The ending was written for characters that they weren't developed to be. Barney met his father, Barney learned to value a woman and married her because he had an idea about these things. why would he jump back and start trying to fill a void he learned to fill already? if Robin couldn't change him, why would a random kid do? why would he make a 180 turn and become overly protective, it doesn't feel realistic, it feels superficial. Same goes for all the other characters. My issue is, that his ending is a forced happy ending. if it was about being realistic, maybe Barney would fall in depression, maybe he'd marry another woman-MAYBE he'd marry the blackhaired chick before Robin because she seemed pretty perfect for him! If it was realistic, why didn't they end it with Ted going back to Robin-as despreate as he is, but Robin closes the window again and he goes back home in tears to tell his kids that they should value what they have as long as they can? there are so many options for realistic endings that would've pissed fans off just as much because it's realistic and sad. But it would've had a message and it'd feel real. Instead they had a happy ending where they push Robin and Ted back together and still kinda want to stutter the stuff about real love and eternal love that seems unfamiliar. What would that be like? Robin and Ted talk things out, but they have no reason to love eachother-we all know this. what would it be like to have them marry again and Barney being the best man? what would all that be like? it feels wrong, it feels forced, it's not realistic, it's a foced happy ending, and I'd rather see another popular character like Lily die before I see a ending where they remain pretentiously in love.

I honestly believe that Robin wasn’t love with Ted as he was with her. She loved him, no doubt, but he loved her way more. I just never thought they were a good fit as a couple. I also think she was truly in love with Barney and they were better suited for each other. If they had to split them up, I would have liked to seem them reunited down the road. And I know this is really reaching, but I would have loved it for Robin to have been the one miraculously pregnant with Barney’s child and not some nameless, faceless skank he banged. I honestly didn't mind that they killed off the mother. I'm a fan of killing off all the characters for an ending. What bugged me is that it was shone tile and time again that ted and robin were just to different for each other. However Barney and robin were perfect for each other but the ending threw away all of barneys character development. Also the big reason ted and robin broke up is because robin didn't want kids. So after the mom had teds kids and died he could go back to robin because he only needed her to make him kids.

Ted and Robin broke up, because Robin knew she couldn't be what Ted wanted, though it was obvious Ted was willing to forgo the kids. Lily said Ted would regret it later in life, but that was before Robin found out she couldn't have kids. The resentment wouldn't have been there after that. Ted let go of Robin because she was getting married. Ted loves Robin, but he would never try to break up her marriage (or Barney's). As for Tracy, she was never there to just be the one to give Ted kids. Ted never would've left Tracy and why anyone would think otherwise, just weren't paying attention to the show. Ted never stopped loving Robin, but that doesn't mean he didn't love Tracy. It doesn't even mean he loved Tracy left. Ted said there wasn't a top 5 list, there was just a top 1. Robin. After which, he meets Tracy and that list changes. It's not a top 2 list and it could possibly be they're tied or Tracy is number 1, but she's been dead for 6 years.

I don't think he denied it. More like, willing to accept that Robin couldn't have children. Which Ted said he was willing to as well. Which, finding out Robin couldn't have kids, was way after Lily explained why Ted and Robin couldn't be together due to the porch rule. In that circumstance, I don't believe Ted would grow to resent Robin. However, this all happening did allow Ted to meet Tracy have two children and fall in love with someone who wasn't Robin. Victoria knew Ted really loved Robin. I'd say Tracy knew it as well, and is why she invited Robin to their wedding. Tracy knew just how much Robin meant to Ted. Tracy was also secure enough to know Ted was not going to leave her and that he loved her.

This show was always about how life isnt always fair and happy. If it was, Marshall's father would still be alive, Barney and Robin would have lasted and maybe Ted wouldve ended up with Stella or something. But life is messy and sad. Thats the point!

Dan Nigro Actually, if life was fair and happy, Ted and Robin wouldn't have broken up after season 2 and we wouldn't have had to go through everything that happened between seasons 3 and 9 because the title "How I Met Your Mother" would refer to Robin, since Ted's story was about her anyway. Even Craig Thomas later admitted that Robin should've been the mother and that they had screwed up making the mother an unseen MacGuffin.
@dannigro8794

But the story wouldnt have been interesting if Robin was simply "The Mother" it wouldve been cliche. The point is Ted wanted a wife and kids and thats what he got. Robin wanted a career and no kids and thats what she got. They wanted different things in their 20s but decades later after kids and a career they can have both.

it would've been interesting if Barney went back after the divorce to be with Nora or Quinn? it would've been realistic if Robin rejected Ted because this has been played over and over again and he'd be back crying accepting his single life and appreciates his kids. it'd be realistic if maybe Marshall died instead of Ted's wife and Lilly would have to stay with her kids alone and deal with his loss? It'd be realistic if Robin and Barney stayed together and Robin realised that Barney started cheating on her and got a baby from another mother... The possibilities of a realistic ending with a point are endless. The existing ending isn't, I'm sorry but this isn't a representation of real life, the show's premise was to hand out a concept of true love that is supposedly eternal and that it's about finding the "true love". YET they decided to scramble things in the ending and have a forced happy ending between Robin and Ted. it's not realistic because the characters were developed to understand that the chase for eachother is hopeless, so how would this work? How would they come to the conclusion that this would work finally? would they get married with Barney as the best man? I wish you were right and the show had a deeper meaning, but truth is, it's not. it's a forced happy ending to shock fans and erases any character growth that happened for the past few years that we went through with them.

No it wasn't! Aside from the failnale the message was always "yes, life can be awful but keep hope, everything will turn out good in the end," that's why (ignoring the main cast in the stupid piece of fanfiction Carter Bays enjoys masturbating too) pretty much everyone got a happy ending - Stella, Kevin, Scooter, Wendy, Natalie, Sam, Loretta, even James who cheated on his husband (I could go on)! As for Marshall's dad - that ends on a really good note too - Marshall gets some good final words and comes to peace with it. Himym was always set in a slightly more idealistic world than our own - of course it was - it was the story of a hopeless romantic telling his kids how he found his true love! This, this, is why the failnale was stupid and didn't fit. "Oh but this is more realistic" I hear you argue. Oh! now I hear you say that I take it all back! In fact I'm going to visit my doppleganger and speak in thought speech about how himym was always 100% realistic - although I might just invite her to come over to mine - I hear her house got infested by the cockamouse :p

I loved the Sitcom and hated the ending. They use 2 seasons for Barneys and Robins wedding, told every detail, and left out so many happy moments of Ted and Tracy. They ruined 40 episodes in less than 3 minutes. And Ted ends up with Robin, even they learned earlier, that they not fit together. Yes people change over time, but the kind of telling this ending was crap. There was not enough time between Tracys death and the reunion with Robin.

I can forgive the divorce and the mother's death, because stuff happens in life and there's nothing people can do about it. I just can't get over Ted getting back together with Robin. The point of the series, to me, is that Ted thought Robin was the right girl, but she just wasn't. Then, Ted MOVED ON and gave Barney and Robin his blessing. However, if Ted had never met Robin he never would have met the mother, so even when things turn out differently than you might have wanted, sometimes things work out well in a way you'd never expect

I would take it a step further. Ted always had deep feelings for Robin. The things that prevented them from being together when they were younger were Robin's desire to be a globetrotting journalist and Ted's desire to have a family and kids. It was never going to work, but it didn't erase their feelings for each other. You see glimpses of it throughout the series. Once both of them had achieved those desires (and with the death of the titular mother), they were then free to be together. The creators mapped out the direction from the start. Everything they did led to that. They were experts at dropping foreshadowing hints all throughout. Personally, I completely understood the ending and thought it was 100% correct.

"...there's no Ross running after Rachel" one of the things that bothered me the most about the HIMYM finale is that they DID turn Ted and Robin into Ross and Rachel by having them end up together at the end. Ted going to Robin's with the purple French horn was their "Ross running after Rachel moment". I despised this finale so much because in 1 hour the writers managed to undo years of character development for Barney, Robin, and Ted in order to "bring the story full circle" and there were much better ways they could've done that.
@therealneal3034
@therealneal3034 6 жыл бұрын
Carolyn's Reading Ramblings that’s the point of this video tho. They DIDN’T undo it. Life just went on for the characters. There’s a deleted scene, after the part where Ted runs into Robin with Penny. They to go grab lunch and she goes on this soliloquy about how they should have ended up together, and Ted just tells her that he’s with Tracy and he’s so madly in love with her that he’s kinda glad that he and Robin didn’t end up together. But then Tracy passed and Ted spent 6 years mourning to the point where his kids had to encourage him to pursue Robin again. In the years that he was with Tracy, he was in love. You saw it in the photo montage. Even in his “45 Days” speech, he says he misses her and wishes they had more time. But that isn’t the case so he had to make due with what he got. And it was Robin.

@@therealneal3034 I completely don't agree that they didn't undo it. Although I don't remember the show very well after those years, I remember that at the end Barney beside having a baby came back to being what he was at the beginning - a fuckboy. They were a perfect fit with Robin. Ted as all the people here said finally after years of being addicted to Robin let it go and then came back to her. And they were always so awful together. No chemistry. It was so realistic - a boy madly in love with a girl that is totally not for him. Seriously I felt like they throw me back to the first season with this last episode. The people that I would say are most probable to divorce in future are Ted and Robin. Not Lily and Marshall, not Robin and Barney, not Ted and most of his exes, but Ted and Robin.

I'd add just one more thing, which is that the show had foreshadowed the ending from the very beginning. In the very first episode Ted describes the first time he met Robin to his kids as being just like a moment right out of a movie when you just know that you're gonna marry that person. Ted always refers to Robin in the present tense, but to the mother in the past tense. Ted always drops hints to the audience that his kids' relationship with their "Aunt Robin" in the future is much closer than just a friend of the family, and that she has actually become a surrogate mother after Tracy's death, such as the crayon drawings the kids made of Robin taking them to the beach and the zoo, and Ted's comment about how Robin is always coming over for Halloween dressed in "crazy costumes." There's Ted and Robin's 40 year pact about how if neither of them are married by the time their in their 40's they'll get back together. And of course, there was Lily and Marshall's bet on Ted and Robin ending up together, to which Marshall always replied "not yet" whenever Lily asked him to pay up.

I recently finished watching HIMYM on Netflix. It took me about 2 months. I was never interested in watching it while it was still ongoing and really the only thing I knew about the show was that Barney had a central spot (memes) and that people were pissed off at the ending, but I didn't know why. I think that semi-binging the show really had an impact on how I built my expectations around the show and the characters. First of all, I never really felt like I was watching a standard sitcom because, just as you were saying in the video, things got very real and deep quite often. And this was nice. I had tons of fun and laughed a lot, but I felt like crying just as many times because this show captured the essence of life as it is - things are not fair, good and bad things will happen. What struck me the most was that even though Ted had his childhood dream fulfilled early on - building the GNB tower in NYC - he never really used this as an excuse to not feel sad and confused because, as the showed progressed, his aspirations changed - wanting a relationship like Marshall & Lilly's. Probably that's why the entire time I was rooting for Ted getting back with Robin - because this was the idealistic scenario in the otherwise life-like progression of the show. Needless to say, I was happy when I saw the blue French horn again because I knew that Ted finally got the girl.

Yes, I agree with all of that!! Plus, honestly I just really respected how unique and crazy of an ending it was. In one regard, he did truly reach that idealistic happy ending he was romanticizing for YEARS (with Tracy), so that's satisfying in of itself. However, another huge part of the entire show was his and Robin's relationship, for better or for worse--it was just so integral to the whole thing. Them getting together at the end is the ultimate example of "if you and I are both single at 40, how bout we just get together". It's not a super ideal thing, but given the circumstances it makes perfect sense.

my complaint isn't that the ending wasn't happy, but that the finale episode spent almost the entire time just taking what it had built up, sometimes of months, if not years, and just tosses it out the windows. it doesn't show those changes the respect they deserve. ted moving to chicago had a long, draw out good buy; and spent almost the entire season building to it. then it the very next scene it's just "hey guys. I met a girls, so I'm not moving now." then you take barney and robin's marriage, and throw that out all the window, so barney to can revert back to his sleazing womanizing self; only to turn right back around and throw THAT change out the window. just about the only thing left that the finale could have done to completely destroy any semblance of the show that he just spent 9 years building would be if they burned down mclearins, and destroyed the apartment. sure, life gets in the way; but so what? the ending come literally out of nowhere. (yes, the writers had that planned from the start. but they spent so much time telling a completely different story that the ending they were going for comes completely out of left field. and they go to great lengths to make sure it comes out of left field.)

kradrol But that's the point. Life isn't a three-act structure where all the loose ends tie up romantically at the end. Life throws you whammies out of left-field. As far as Ted's change goes, you've missed the point completely. Ted didn't meet A girl. He met THE girl: Cindy's roommate, the one whose paintings he thought were cool, the one whose umbrella he'd shared, the one that Cindy seemed to indicate was perfect. He believed he had found the one, and being a person who knows what he wants, he let go of the Chicago job, which he had only taken because he needed to get away from the pain of Barney and Robin. Barney as well, he became a womanizer again because it was his coping mechanism, one that he'd been using for years because his original hippie girlfriend left him. Right until he found a purpose in life - his child.

I get that life isn't a 3 act play. but this isn't life, it's a tv show. i'm fine with the actually ending of the show, my complaint is how they go there. Ted not moving to chicago because he met tracy is fine. but the reason I used "I met a girl." instead of "I met the one" is because THAT'S WHAT TED SAID. that was how they handled it. he didn't tell anyone "by the way, I found the one. so i'm gonna stick around." it was just "hey guys. I didn't move. I met a girl." I'm fine with ted not moving to chicago. i'm fine with things changing. i'm not ok with the way those changes were just causally tossed aside like it wasn't important. atleast with barney's initial change he explained "if that didn't happen with robin, it's not going to happen with anyone. can I please just be me?" because that's who he was. and again, the one change they actually paid any respect to was also thrown out the window 20 minutes later.

Just the mother dying would've been fine - that would've been a very tragic and emotional, but good ending. And it would've made sense, since it was obviously planned from the beginning. But then they decided that Robin should split up with Barney just so Ted could have her. And that was what ruined the ending for me. They trashed the entire point of this ending. It wasnt a good ending, and it wasnt a bad ending. It was something weird in between. The entire last season, especially Robin and Barney's marriage, was pretty much pointless. It felt like they only split up just so Ted could be happy; except he wasn't. It's like they felt sorry for Ted and decided to make his ending a little bit brighter, but ultimately screwed up the ending's message in the process. Sure, people chance, but that seemed a bit too ridiculous. It felt rushed. It felt forced.

Sometimes we need time to realize that our soulmate was right in front of us this whole time. Also if its meant to be it will be - the creators worked out every small detail. It's such a shame no one pays attention to that.

Just wanna leave here that the real problem for me with the ending, is they sacrificed the mother so that the robin story wasn't "she sacrificed her personal life to have a successful professional life" and also "Even tho Ted was basically kicked in the teeth by Robin many times, he was still the sucker in love in the end".

I totally get the divorce and death, like you said stuff happens in life and sometimes it sucks, but I thought the point of the show was that Ted always had these feelings for Robin and it affected his love life for years because he couldn't shake the feeling Robin might marry him. Then, he met Tracy and it all went out the window and he moved on from Robin.

Haven’t watched himym in awhile, but glad this vid came up in suggestions. I absolutely love this show. And I’ve had many discussions and disagreements about WHY I loved the ending. This was able to articulate what I couldn’t express, so THANK YOU. I do want to add, that if one believes in life after death, I like to think that Tracy went back to her first love in the after life: Ted got the family he wanted. Robin got the career she wanted. Tracy got the love she wanted. Love is versatile. Sometimes things fall apart so other things can come together ❤️

I like your reading of the show but I disagree with it entirely, partly because I think they should have either carried the show on for longer to tell that story or end it with Ted meeting the mother. The idea of life changing would be better articulated over a long time, trying to cover their entire lives in an episode was incredibly misguided.

I do mention it's a bit jarring to have such vast time jumps in such a short episode run time, and I agree that that's the greatest weakness of the finale. The story it was telling was great, but it didn't quite give the audience time to take it in before rushing off to the next beat.

That was my main peeve with the show too. Ted built a solid and loving marriage with Tracy after so much disappointment, trials and heartbreak, yet he seemed to run back to Robin, the one that was so not meant for him. Part of the last season was him finally "letting her go" and he did. Yet he latched on to her again. I get that it was 6 years between Tracy's death (which is not an issue) but for the viewers it was literally 30 seconds. I love HIMYM because you see the characters develop, yet Ted seemed to go back to Season 1 Ted. Other than that, I loved the series.

ArdoBlueMoon Ted talked us through their life together and how long it had been since she died. How was that sudden for you? Ted doesn't deserve to move on until you see him experiencing the pain of losing his soul mate during those 6 years? What people don't seem to realize is that Ted would not have went after Robin if his kids didn't approve, the entire story was him talking about his past with her and warming them up to the idea. If you all want to blame Ted for "moving on so fast" then you should also blame his kids for wanting to see him happy and pushing him to do it.

They should have build it up with episodes... You can't just change everything in one episode and then say 'this is our ending, just deal with it.' The ending makes the four seasons before totally irrelevant. Barney is still the same, Ted is still the same and Robin is still the same. So at the end the thing we learn is that people don't change... You try to change for a little bit, but it won't last. Well that is a depressing ending, for a pretty good television show. Mostly for the, by everybody beloved, character Barney. At the end he didn't change end I can't find any sort of appreciation for this. The ending is just really bad and I think the creators should be a shamed of it.

It’s especially bad when the majority of the entire final season takes place in the span of two days. This time they could’ve spent giving Ted and Tracy giving a good story, stretching it out a bit, showing the mother die, and showing Ted moving on…All of that, something that usually would’ve taken a few seasons at least in the show, shoved into a 45 minute montage. Everything changes for the sake of changing, and it makes digesting it and accepting it so much harder. This can also apply to Barney and Robin. I had no issue with Ted and Robin getting together, but they rushed it, and that killed so much of the quality. For a show that was ultimately a long, drawn out story, they rushed it when it really mattered, and that’s why the ending fails so badly.

People! People! Have you for once looked at it from Robin's perspective ? Here are a few facts about Robin when it comes to her feelings for Ted that you may or may not have noticed: 1. When they wanted to move in together, Robin showed in every single way that she did NOT really want him in her home. What eventually prevents them from moving in together and eventually breaking up. She was terrified to take that big step with a man who wants marriage and children so badly. 2. When her engagement to the therapist was over, Ted asked if she still loves him, and we all remember the painful "NO" that she replied. Same for Barney, who waited for her at the bar, hoping she broke up with the therapist after he broke up with his girlfriend, and got his heart broken when she nodded NO at him when she came in. 3. Robin, with all of her efforts, for at least 3 seasons, was in love with Barney on and off. As she was completely blinded by his charm and couldn't see well that he was NOT marriage material. 4. At the wedding day, she stood with her mother on the porch, and her mother told her that the most important thing is that she will be with someone who always be there for her, and Robin agreed with her while honestly thinking of Ted. 5. Robin was afraid of marrying Barney and saw many red flags, so too, Barney freaked out completely, disappeared for a while and tried to run away to "change his tie". 5. Robin DID NOT like the fact that Barney still spoke inappropriately about women, which Ted told him about, and Barney refused to listen. 6. Robin slowly started to see Ted in a different light towards her wedding day. 7. When Ted tracked down her locket, and she knew about it, Ted told her "I do not love you this way anymore", while SHE didn't really respond back. She would have run away with him if he agreed. 8. When she saw him at the final Halloween party, her heart was wrecked, not because of jealousy, but because deep down she knew he was the right guy for her and she missed her chance. 9. The main reason Robin had feelings for Barney, was because they have the same mindset, which proved to her again and again that it is not enough to build a strong marriage. 10. She once told Ted, that love is a combination of chemistry and timing. And that timing is a B**ch. 11. When Ted was about to get married to Stella, Robin asked him not to, because she couldn't see him being tied down to another woman. 12. Robin got confused again and again because of her dream to balance travel, work and her love life, although sometimes she did give up on it for love ( remember the duck vs rabbit? Don?). So, what is my point ? There were 4 stories in the end, Ted's, Barney's, Tracy's and Robin's. Robin's story started with her being completely honest with every man she dated - "I do not want children " and got her heart broken, because she never wanted to do this to the men she loved, and she understood the importance of children in their future. Her career, while it is was successful, in the end left her completely alone. She had never interfered with Ted's marriage to the mother, or tried to get back with Barney. In the final episode, the children stated that Ted and Robin are "so obvious" which shows that the spark they had long time ago, came back big time. She was always there for him as a friend, she truly cared for him, and on her wedding day deep down she wished it was Ted standing there in front of her, and not Barney. That's why, with all the pain, it does make sense that they will end up together. As they agreed before- after 40 if they are both single, they will get together. And one last thing - we all got a HUGE sign that they will be together in the end, when Marshall did not give up on his bet with Lilly that Ted and Robin will end up together. Although Ted was head over heels in love with the mother, those feelings for Robin he had for all those years before surfaced back, because at that time, they could finally be together after achieving their dreams. Think about it.

This is a well-made video. Yes, the idea of the show is that life isn't always happy and sometimes it gets in the way of things. And maybe the idea of the episode initially wasn't bad. But I still think this was terrible. Maybe not a disaster like I first thought, but still terrible, especially in execution. 1) Failed Marriage: This is a minor, subjective thing, but I disagree with the statement "successful marriage that only lasted three years" because it is paradoxical. The whole point of marriage is to take the person you love as your partner until "death do us part". To vow that you will be exclusive to each other until the end. Divorce absolutely means failed marriage. If you don't see marriage that way, then what's the point of getting married? So it's not a problem per se, just that I definitely see it as a failed marriage and see Barney's statement as a joke. 2) Wasted Time: There's nothing more annoying than wasting the audience's time. Before the wedding problem, I'll touch on Lily and Marshall. Like the wedding, Lily and Marshall's decision to move to Italy for Lily's dream was immediately changed again to Marshall becoming a judge. I think I remember flash forwards in previous seasons that show Lily and Marshall still being in New York, which makes the Italy decision all the more pointless. If they're going to stay in New York, instead of changing it last minute again, either structure the Italy issue in a way that the final decision is naturally New York. For example maybe the idea can be that sometimes dreams have to be sacrificed to do the rational and right thing. Maybe Lily learns this after having an inner conflict with her end of Season 1 self. It's similar to the real one I think, but in the end they decide to stay in New York. Anyway, back to the wedding: The entirety of the final season was spent on building up Barney and Robin's wedding. To do that, but then pull the plug immediately after is, like you said, jarring and makes it all pointless. I mean, what is the point of presenting throughout the whole season; trials, obstacles, problems that are all overcome to prove that they will stay together no matter what... if they're going to get divorced after a career problem? 3) Character Development: This is the biggest problem with the finale. I don't remember if Lily and Marshall's character developments were ruined like the others. So moving on with Barney. He learned to be honest and to love someone after so many years of deception and fooling around with girls. So it's all the more frustrating to see how after he gets divorced with Robin, he reverts back to his old ways, and even worse when he ends up as a single dad. Next, Robin. I hated how in the end he reverted back to her Season 1 self by sacrificing those he loves (specifically Barney) for her freaking career. This made me hate her. This would be like if Lily left Marshall again and went to Spain because "dreams and career and stuffz". Finally, Ted. In several of his relationships with Robin it is shown how they don't work as a couple. In the last few seasons, we are shown Ted constantly still loving her, Robin saying she doesn't love him, and finally in one of the episodes of the last season, learning to finally let go of Robin. How can you ignore all that and bring them back together again? You can't, and you shouldn't. It makes all of what Ted has learned completely pointless. So in the end, maybe the idea they were going for weren't all bad considering the themes and ideas of the show; but that doesn't excuse bad execution, with wasted time, plot lines and character developments.

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding you on the Italy point, but they did go in the end, didn't they? As I understand it, it was only ever for a year, hence Marshall asking the guy who called him about the judgeship "Can I start in a year?" We get a brief fast forward at the end of "Daisy" to them in Italy with Martin and Judy after Daisy had been born. The Italy decision became natural after Marshall realised that his most important dream is to have a family, making it a no-brainer for him to put off the judgeship in favour of Lily's career aspirations. Every fast forward after that with Lily and Marshall is, I'm pretty sure, at least a year after the wedding when they would have returned from Italy.

I don't think that a finale in which everybody ended up happily and statically in love would have been better that what we got; but what I think bothered many of us was the way the whole season used the time it had left. If it had been a season about "life happening", "getting in the way", showing us how the years changed the relationship of Barney and Robin, maybe making the parallel between Ted and the mother and Stella and her ex (which I think was a really interesting idea you suggested), it could have worked. But summing up more than 10 years of story into the last 40 minutes, and showing so many changes without context... was just below the quality that the show used to deliver. The examples you used were great, and the contrast between the way the creators built those situations (Marshall's father's death, the way in which Ted's and Barney's way of relating to women shifted, etc.) and the way they mishandled equally complex situations in the finale (divorce, death, not being as close as you used to be to the people you love) are what made it such a disappointment.

I am sad Ted's wife passes away, but both Robin and Ted are at a point in which they have experienced what they wanted to. Ted had a beautiful marriage and two kids, something he wanted throughout his life and Robin had an amazing career. Anything that was holding them back from eachother is gone. I understand that the finale wasn’t all about how Ted used the Mother as a consolation prize, but to me, it’s lazy writing and a slap in the face to all the fans that spent years waiting in anticipation for the mother, only to find out that she only gets like 2 hours of screen time (or whatever it is), because the easy thing is for her to die so that Ted can run back to the character that we already know he has chemistry with and that fans like-who by the way, we just watched an entire season devoted to the struggle it takes to get her down the aisle with A DIFFERENT MAN. To me, that basically just screams that the writers didn’t feel like (or didn’t know how to) put the time and effort into making us fall in love with a new love interest for Ted, as well as figuring out a way for Robin and Barney to have a happy ending. Because let’s be honest, if it ended before we find out Ted and Robin are going to get back together, we wouldn’t be happy with her ending up alone. The final season felt like a waste of time, because all of the high stakes struggles that the characters go through (Robin and Barney’s marriage, Ted’s wife) comes unraveled at the very end, and we end up right back where we started in the Pilot episode. There is no sense of successful progress, and that is what’s upsetting to me about this show’s finale.

I can understand what people hate about the ending. I also loved Barney and Robin together. But it is like the kids say at the end: "You said this story is about mom, but she rarely even appears in it." The series starts with Ted falling in love with Robin, and that stretches throughout all seasons. He tries so often, but in the end he will always end up loving Robin. And thats what they tried to do in the finale, because it would have broken the circle if he stayed with Tracie. There was no better way for the story to end than Ted finally getting over the mother of his children and getting together with Robin happily ever after.

"LIFE HAPPENS" -- WHAT I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT, ABOUT THE FINALE OF HIMYM. 💗💗💗 There are no happily ever afters. But we go on, in the face of devastating heartaches. I actually Thought, when I was just starting to watch the show, that Ted was telling the story of how he met their mother ... because he and the Mother had just divorced, amicably. From the way Ted talked about her I always felt that he and the Mother were no longer together, but that they were still very fond of each other. The Ending broke my heart -- but the meaning I got from the whole messy thing was this: we CAN go on, life can be good again, no matter how bad our losses. 💗
